I jumped ship from RAW to the USA network cuz they showed the first 10 minutes of the Dawn of the Dead remake right before the end of Final Destination... (SPOILERS, sorry I don't know the hidden html thing)

It's slicklooking as hell, to the point that there's one shot thats right out of a friggin' car commercial.
So as far as visuals go, it's cool...

BUT...

Sprinting zombies that jump back up like 2 feet in the air as soon as they hit the ground?

Instant zombification? The guy died and came back in the time it took for Sarah Polley to dial a phone twice...

A Shining "homage"? Hasn't that been parodied and homaged to death by now?

Not to mention a complete anarchic overnight apocalypse in suburbia? If this wasn't Dawn of the Dead that part would be cool (heck if it was a biological terror film most of it would be cool) but this is a ZOMBIE movie. The stuff I saw in those 10 minutes was like watching 10 minutes of a werewolf movie where the werewolves swim like the Creature from the Black Lagoon and have wings.

I know it was only 10 minutes, but I'm leaning towards a thanks, but no thanks Hollywood on this one...

Who am I kidding, I'll still be sitting there freaking out. Just nowhere near as much as I'd like to have been. ESPECIALLY since I picked up the DVD of the original last night and it STILL holds up after all these years, even with the dated effects...

My favorite thing in the original is a lady I like to call "Franken-nurse". In two scenes, there is a zombie woman in a nurse outfit, who manages to flub the role of a zombie. While everyone else is slowly shambling and scraping along, this woman walks arms straight out and bug-eyed. Cracks me up every time I see it. How can you fuck up being a zombie?

And I will show you something different from either
Your shadow at morning striding behind you
Or your shadow at evening rising to meet you;
I will show you fear in a handful of dust.

I'm more partial to the zombie that grabs Ken Foree's gun and then holds onto it until minutes later, when Ken just grabs the thing away with no trouble. He doesn't do anything with the gun, doesn't try to bite the dude when he grabs it back, he's just. . .passively holding on to it.

Just a really surreal moment. Like when we find Zombies don't handle escalators too well, but kick ass on a hockey rink.

I'm going to see the movie regardless, but I know a few of my favorite parts from the original won't be in it.

-One legged creepy priest.
-Bikers with an arsenal of pie.
-The weird mall music that plays during the ending credits.
-Biker checking his blood pressure.

I do have faith, however, that there will be a scene portraying a bunch of rednecks drinking beer and shooting zombies.

LOL!!! I think that everytime I watch it.

As far as other stuff from the original, I always wondered why after the 2 cops hot-wired the 18-wheelers, instead of driving straight to the mall entrances they didn't take a few laps around the mall parking lot and wipe out as many zombies as they could? I know a few zombies did the bug-on-a-windshield thing but those were the ones who just happened to be in the path they were driving on to the mall entrances.

I just cannot have any love for a version without that music. Possibly the most catchy surreal music for a movie I've ever heard (with the possible exception of the calliope from hell used in Ghost House). The fact that this zombie movie ends with this happy bouncy little tune just works so perfectly.

I've also read (but it might not be true) that the creepy mall music was an accident. Nobody could figure out how to turn the music off at the Monroeville Mall, as it was on a timer, so it was incorporated into the movie. I've been told (by zombie fans older than me) that the mall used the music even after the movie was released. That would be a most surreal experience. I've been to the mall in the past few years (a must stop on my last trip to Pitt), and it still kinda looks like the mall in the movie.

Gravity is a contributing factor in nearly 73 percent of all accidents involving falling objects.
