God, what a week.

Last Tuesday my friends and I were walking through the mall when one of them decides to walk into an EB and 'browse.' Of course, for him, 'browse' means 'impulse buy a PS2, 4 games, network adapter, etc.' Tells me he got it for $129 used after a mail-in rebate. Not bad, I think, and the next day I scrounge up a bunch of Xbox and GC tradeins to finally join the Sony army. Ended up settling on FFX, X-2, and Kingdom Hearts after a buy 2 get 1 free used game offer and a $5 DVD kit throwaway buy to bump up my trade-in credit.

The next day, the nightmare begins.

First, Kingdom Hearts starts screwing up. Freezes going past the World Select screen, long load times, the works. FFX starts acting up too (I refuse to play X-2 until X is finished.) So I return the used disks and pay the difference to get new ones. Same problems. So the system goes back on Thursday afternoon around 3 PM.

At 5, I throw in Kingdom Hearts. Disk read error. The HELL. FFX. Disk Read Error. X-2, for good measure. Disk Read Error. Foley's DVD. DISK READ F'N ERROR. A PS1 game? THAT plays fine. As much as I love my $150 black PS1, this needs to go back. (On a side note, it was amusing seeing something job to Foley after all his losses on the DVD.)

So the same employees see me come in and are pretty nice to me about my problems, and decide to upgrade me from a used system to refurbished. They even tell me that if this one acts up, I can talk to their store manager about working out a deal to get a new one due to all my trouble. Not bad, I think.

Guess what?

The games play, but the load times are horrendous. The drive tray won't stay open and the system generally looks like crap. So the next night (apparently video game store managers can't be awake before noon) I voice my concerns about three broken PS2's to the manager. His response?

"Well, maybe you're not plugging them in right."

SCREW. YOU. If I wasn't getting a picture you might want to say that... but how in the hell do AV cables have any bearing on it taking three minutes to load a new area? Finally, after a lot of "Maybe it's all your disks" and "I managed a Blockbuster, I know about this thing" he begrudgingly gives me another system. When he takes my rebate slip, I ask why - apparently, refurbished systems aren't part of that rebate, despite me not having a choice in the matter on what system I had. He says he'll 'talk to his district manager' about it. Well, friend, you can give me that man's number too.

Thankfully, that manager was much more helpful. A giftcard is on the way to my house and I don't ever need to set foot in that particular store again (hopefully, this system doesn't shit out on me - fingers crossed!) Even so, this is more than enough for me to not recommend shopping EB if you want any kind of customer service from the employees - and especially the managers.

(Side note - the friend I talked about earlier who bought his PS2 at a different EB? Turns out his controller was messed up, so he took his system in to get it checked out. They put a game in and tested a new controller... and left the game inside. Bastard gets a free game and I get the shaft. Some luck, eh?)

That sucks man. I have never cared so much for EB. I much perfer FuncoLand/GameStop/Whatever crazy name they want to use. The sales people tend to considerablly more knowledgable and the prices a little bit better. They also let you test out a used game in their store to be sure it works properly if you ask- they have never let me in an EB.

I have never have a prob at EB. Only thing I can really say is the lady I talk to seems to not like me to well, because she never helpful and always wants me gone it seems. I don't talk her ear off I just ask question and some reason this is to much for her to handle. The Manger before her was cool as hell and knew me by name and gave me any help to bad she on the other side of town. All we got in this town is EB, Best Buy, Game exchange, Cir. city, and Toy R Us.

I hear ya EB seems to employ casual gamers or just high schhol out fresh out of kids who just want a paycheck and want games at a discount. They aren't their for a career and why should they care what they say or how they act.

It's wrong I agree but what can you do.

I refuse to shop at EB after they tried screwing me about free pre-order bonuses.

EB's national headquarters is in my hometown, in the Philly suburbs. Therefore, we have a ton of them around here, and we were the first to get their clearance outlets (first Stop 'N' Save Software, now simply EBGames). Boy, did I ever buy a TON of old stuff at massive discounts from Stop 'N' Save...

Rule #1: Never buy a used PS2 if you can help it. Most of them do hold up fine over the years, but a fair number do break down, and lots of people who have malfunctioning PS2s go the trade-it-in-hoping-nobody-at-the-shop-will-notice route to get _some_ money back on them.

While your hardware was screwed up, the service doesn't actually sound that bad overall. They took faulty hardware back twice without complaining or giving you the third degree, which is more than some places I've bought from would do (for all they knew, you might've been bringing in every broken PS2 in your neighborhood and getting working replacements for each, unless they were keeping track of the serials).

The third time, the manager was suspicious of you, but you must admit that three bad systems in a row is an unusual situation. He gave you a harder time, but did give you a fourth system (which presumably worked) AND passed you on his manager, who apologized and sent you a giftcard. I know that buying things that don't work right is aggravating as hell, but that's a pretty good ratio of helpful people to asses.

Every retail store has a certain percentage of asses working for it, and stupid things that management makes the retail staff do and say. EB is no exception. When I go to GameStop/FuncoLand, I generally have to wear a "No, I Do Not Want A Cleaning Kit Or A Store Game-Club Membership, And I Wipe My Ass With Game Informer Magazine" T-shirt to ward off overanxious salespersons.

All... all? I have to drive over 50 miles if I want to buy video game stuff from somewhere besides Wal-Mart.

And with all the problems brand new PS2s have, I can't imagine even considering buying a used/refurbished one.

And you do. Oh, yes, you do. (There's always Half and eBay.)

In my 3AM ranting, I forgot that how after the first system I was told to go back and get the faulty games to 'prove' the system didn't work. Regardless, this is moreso a problem with the manager than the general employee base (they seemed to actually care about their jobs, too) and had I known that EB didn't actually test or try out used systems they get traded in pre-resale, I would have taken the offer with more than a grain of salt.

By that point, I probably would've told the manager to stick his tongue in my starfish.

Like all retail chains, individual stores will vary. I'm spoiled by the massive overload of game stores around here (every mall has an EB or a GameStop, most have both, there are EB clearance outlets, there are lots of GameStops that were FuncoLands, there's Game Gallery if I head closer to the city, and we had Microplay for a while), so it's easier to pick and choose which staff I want to buy from. A lot of EBs probably do test their used systems and games, but there are occasional exceptions.
