Not only did he do it in 11 minutes, the guy ranked out an absurd amount of points, got 99 lives left, AND never took a hit. That is so frickin' surreal.

Well, I guess he had plenty of time to practice, eh?

Sweet zombie Jesus. That was incredible. That must be how normal people felt watching Michael Jordan.

(You can kill Bowser like that? That doesn't make any sense.)

That's insane. I've seen it twice today (once at gamefaqs.com), and I still don't believe it. What was with the box thingy in World 1-3? Since when does warping from the Warp Zone let you go to World 8?

That was unbelievable. This guy wasn't just beating the boards, he was toying with them. Going back and jumping all over the place. Now i got to try this.

Seems legit and amazing to me!

If there's any shennanigans going on, it's in the level menu. It seems like Mario was moving a little fast there. Plus, in World 8, he crossed over that one part (the red boxes) without getting pulled down. Maybe an edit there?

But still...Holy Shit.

That's possible, if you're lucky and zoom across the thing real fast, therefore avoiding three potentially tough levels.

Of course, they were easy as hell, and you got a Super Leaf as a result.

Two questions, two answers:

(1) If you duck behind that box for about 3 seconds or so, you fall "behind" the background. As long as you don't take a hit, keep running toward the exit and you'll run behind the background and warp into a treasure room with the warp flute.

(2) Using a warp flute in the warp zone will allow you to go to World 8. It's always been like that :)

He's my daddy!!! I've never...EVER been able to beat SMB3; and this guy does it in 11 minutes? Holy crap....

I couldn't believe it when I saw it; but there's no indication any cheat..er..Game enhancers were used. My hats off to him.

These are definitely legit because they were originally released in the form of emulator based movies, which are basically a recording of all the keystrokes. If you use a Game Genie code or any other sort of cheating, the movie will get desynched when someone watches it without the exact same cheats.

There are a couple of similar movies involving the original Super Mario Bros in which the "author" takes advantage of various glitches in the original game, such as being able to jump off of walls.

Hmmmm...the clock seems to speed up and slow down in certain parts of 1-1 and 1-2. Seems like those levels were taped to me. But legit or not, two questions.

1. I've never seen that glitch in Bowser's castle before, was that real?

2. Can you bounce off Bowser's head without harm, or were the reverbs of the fireballs keeping him away?

ETA: After watching the fortress again, I'm even more convinced that it is fake because you CANNOT maintain the "P" ability after landing a jump, hitting a "?" and jumping again. It's impossible. You could crush your B button INTO your pad and you can't do it, and he did it TWICE (back at the mushroom too.)

i haven't played SMB3 in a long time, but in the first lvl he seems to be flying after the initial jump, without a tail.

like, he hits the peak of upness after the jump, then begins to hover as if he had the tail, but he doesn't. i don't recall being able to do that as a tiny Mario.....?

also, i used to thrash that game out, and i don't recall ever being so lucky as to bounce across a whole lvevl of enimies, let alone do it again and again, i don't think this is legit. and IF, huge emphasis on IF!!! this is real, then the dude who was doing the playing needs to get his ass a life, becuase it would take like a year to learn by heart the exact positions of all the enemies, and when to jump like that.

How to Make the Wienerboard a Better Place, Chapter 1: Just because you can't spell "Heidenreich", doesn't make you clever.
Babelfish is your friend... sort of. The guy's official site is at the end of the video. Go there and translate.

He did, in fact, play through the whole game like that. But in an emulator, at ONE frame per second. He'd also save quite liberally, and if he screwed up, he'd just load it again. In a way, you've been had.

Here's an example of how to do it with hex editing... either way, we can assume that the people doing this have entirely too much time on their hands.

You can't exactly fly but you CAN sort of... glide a bit if you've built up the "P" meter.

The one-frame-per-second deal and the liberal saving/loading explains a ton... like SSS's noting of the inconsistent time, for example. But, even if it's not a legit achievement, it's still quite impressive to watch.

I don't belive this as far as I can throw it. And with my bad back I shouldn't throw anything.

The tanks and airplane levels in World 8 alone take more then 3 mins each.

Even if you had infinite "P" you can't just fly past them. The screen is autoscrolling, and its very slow at some points.

This "11 minutes" is totally fake, but hey I'm sure he/she got what they wanted attention on the internet

The story is, if you visit the website listed in the credit (and translate from Japanese) is that the guy put the game in an emulator, saved very very often, and restored when ever he made a mistake. The emulator video recorder does the same save/restore process to make it look smooth.

So, in other words it is NOT possible. You are not playing the game as designers orignally intended. If I could save, and then reset when I dies then hell everyone could do it.

Sure, he beat the game in 11 minutes, but cheated by saving the game at points you cant in the original game and restoring it when he made a mistake.

Oh, just PRETEND it's real. You know, like much of us do with wrestling. Sure, some guys here and there started fondling his balls, but it's nothing to get jealous over. Maybe "everyone" can do it (except for me, I'll admit), but he was the first. It looked cool, and it was free, so I'm thankful, legit or not.

I wouldn't say beating the game that fast is impossible, necessarily... just that this guy didn't do it. Nothing that he did in-game was impossible (with the possible exception of the glitch in Bowser's castle, which only looked to have shaved a second or two off his time) if you know what you're doing and know where/when the enemies show up.

The parts where he most likely used the save/restore were probably the "trap" worlds that he skimmed over, and the boat/tank stages where he showed off racking up lives by bouncing on cannon shells and hammer dudes. The traps *are* avoidable if you have tremendously good timing/luck, and his bouncing around on the bullets/hammer guys didn't really have any effect on his time, since the stage scrolls by at a set pace. He could've just as easily played it safe, gone through more conservatively and gotten the same results, time-wise.

All things considered, I wouldn't be surprised if someeone out there had gotten at least within a minute or so of that time legitimately. There're a lot of Nintendo/emulator owners with a lot of time on their hands out there...
