Hey, don't blame me, blame Raw Roulette last night for bringing this up. It's pretty damn obvious that we never really see any cage matches with the women in this country. But in Japan, they happen all the time, and with great results. I can give you guys two truly great joshi cage matches that should really alter your perceptions in a good way. The first is from an All Japan Women show back in September '97 called Kawasaki Cage Legend (or Rage in the Cage in the puro tape places).

The match involved a tag team called the UTOPS (Kaoru Ito & Tomoko Watanabe), and the promotion's tag team champions Las Cachorras Orientales (Etsuko Mita and Mima Shimoda). The champs actually left the AJW the month before to freelance in other promotions, but they never lost the belts. This match wasn't for the title however, but for pride. I'll let Mike Lorefice pick up the story..Click Here (quebrada.net) Oh, and there's pictures from the match too! How about that?

Oh, and for the horndogs out there, here's some hot shots of what many consider the diva of the four women (and all of japanese women's wrestling), Mima Shimoda:Click Here (quebrada.net) She's got the divalike looks, but a vet's experience. She retired after 17 years in September.

The second is also from the great AJW, this one happened back in 1990 between two women I'm sure whose names are familiar to many wieners, Aja Kong and Bull Nakano. These two have fought tooth and nail for the WWWA Title (AJW's big title). The rivalry got real brutal in November 1990 at the Wrestlemarinpiad show, when they hooked up in a cage with NO REFEREES. Oh, Quebrada?

Kanaami (chain link cage) No Referee Death Match Escape Rule: Bull Nakano vs. Aja Kong. A classic grudge match; stiff, bloody, and brutal. This was a brawl with one gimmick spot after another. However, it made sense for them to take things to this level because they hated each other that much. The thing that made this match great was there was actually focus to these gimmick laden attacks. Bull used the gimmicks to try to disable Aja's uraken (spinning backfist) arm, while Aja attacked Bull's leg to try to take away her flying and kicks. The seconds helped add to the drama as they were fighting with each other the whole time for chances to help their woman out. Bull's guillotine leg drop off the top of the cage is one of the moves responsible for making a dive off the cage a "required" part of future cage matches. ****3/4

Those are just two examples of what a women's cage match can be. Don't bet on seeing something like that here in the States. But, do yourself a favorite and see these classics for yourself. For Rage in the Cage, you can find it in places like JTapes.com or Prowrestlingtapes.com. Same goes for Wrestlemarinpiad '90. There are other places as well, all I know is that they're not at Highspots, not yet anyway. Enjoy.

P.S. I fixed the link to the first cage match review, so if you tried earlier, sorry about that. You should have no trouble now.

Although the problem in North America any type of long term feuding between two women to necessitate a cage match has been almost non-existant. The closest they've come in the last few years is Trish-Victoria, and but I don't think it ever crossed their minds to do it.

Maybe I'm old-school, but when I think cage match, I think the absolute final battlefield between two people feuding, and on the women's side, there hasn't been much that they've built up to necessitate that.

I'm not against the idea, but I'm against it if it's not built up properly. The idea in North America would be to build up something to the boiling point so that a cage match would MEAN something...as opposed to it being "Ooooh, look! It's GIRLS! In a CAGE!". And it really wouldn't require that much effort.

I totally agree with you there. The matches I spoke of are rivalries that lasted months, nay, years. I doubt we'd see a women's feud with that much momentum. But if we do, that would be a miracle in itself.

Hell, at this point in North America I'd settle for a feud with momentum, period.

The hardest thing this year on my RSPW ballot was picking 3 feuds with legs. Usually that's the easiest thing to fill out.

Again, I think I'm too used to seeing feuds carry on for extended periods. Is it that the game has changed and I haven't changed with it, or is it their problem for not being able to sustain a story? Actually by "they" I guess I mean the WWE more than anything.

For people that want to see a lucha match, there is one on this tape:

http://www.wrestleholicsvideos.com/aaa/ mx0068.htm

I'd definitely agree with the 'bloody' comment, but it isn't a very good match, and the only teams involved that really had any sort of build into the match were Las Brujas (Janeth & Hamada) and the Moreno sisters.

I'm not sure if it was mentioned here or not (I think someone said something about cage matches with Ric Flair...), but in the WWE, cage matches are little more than gimmick matches. In the NWA, you could only win by pinfall, so you had to beat the snot our of your opponent to win. In the WWE, you win by getting out of the cage, so you beat the snot out of the other guy, then run away from him. Seems wrong somehow...

Which is why I always thought the best cage matches were the better versions of WarGames...when you have 5 guys per side and the object is to pound the crap out of each other until someone says "Mommy!"....now THAT'S a cage match.
Although the Tully-Magnum match is beautifully void in moral decency as well.

On the other hand, unless it was a match where Jimmy Snuka was jumping off the top or Bret and Owen taking insane bumps around the cage, the WWE didn't really have a good cage format until Hell In The Cell was invented.

I dunno, you don't have to look at it that way. You could look at it as you beat the crap out of the guy, and then leave him laying in a heap and walk away from him, having proven your point. All fights end at a certain juncture. There's nothing more badass then leaving a guy trashed and then walking away, as if to say: "this bitch means nothing to me now."

You can't blame Vince for trying to differentiate his product from the NWA at the time, and it also doesn't hurt for at least one of the many ppl who have made this argument/complaint, in this thread and the best cage matches of all time DVD thread, to acknowledge that WWE has been having cage matches with submission and pin stips for at least 5 years now. I think Hell in the Cell however, has eclipsed the cage match, at least in the mind of the modern fan, as the ultimate way to settle a grudge. It sort of says: "a cage couldn't contain this feud...it's going to take even more..."

Don't take this the wrong way, but I gotta say it. I do not like the idea of women in cages. I've only seen one or two women cage matches, and it falls in the category of disturbing for me. I like the WWE division, and only wish there'd be more women to participate, but I don't like watching women beat the crap out of each other with weapons. I don't like seeing women bleed profusely, after blading. It doesn't matter if other women are creating the violence, it's uncomfortable for me to watch. It's one thing if it's practically a cartoon, like the female violence in Crouching Tiger, but if it's excessive violence, like Kill Bill, I just find it distasteful. I am growing sick and tired of all the males bleeding all over the place lately, like for example Survivor Series, which after a certain point becomes less "cool" and more "utterly disgusting", but I just have no stomach for watching women in brutal matches, hurting each other, blading, bumping huge and hard. I don't know why that is, call me sexist, but this is not exactly my idea of gender equality.

Hey, you do have a point there. I see what you mean, there's nothing more gross than a woman bleeding. But, I figured I went and tell the folks that these matches do happen with either gender. After all, if the wheel landed on Paddle on a Pole, this thread would not be here.
