A few years ago on Thunder, none other than Bob Sapp made an appearance. It was just a basic interview, then for no reason at all he suddenly starts laughing like a maniac. I thought that was probably the Greatest Thunder moment ever.

Does anybody know the date of Sapp's appearance?

Hey, here's a NEW FACE! And a VERY pretty face it is, too. Ladies & Gentlemen, meet Ms. Lynn Ericson. Wouldn't you just love being Mean Gene right about now? Her interviewee is Mr. Robert Sapp, former Minnesota Viking football player. He's being trained by Mr. Sam Greco, he of the scary visage and bad attitude. Mr. Sapp is as new (and as green!) to the art of cutting a promo in WCW as Ms. Ericson is. Mr. Sapp is following Mr. Greco's teaching that sounds an awful lot like "the bigger they are...!" A somewhat amateurish spot, but let's give the Ms. Ericson a chance, okay?

After seeing Sapp fighting in PRIDE, I can't believe Vince didn't sign this guy. He's huge, seems able to move pretty well and has a great look. Based on the interviews he did when he had the Tough Man fight against William 'The Refrigerator' Perry, I'd say he's a decent talker, as well.

The fight I saw him in was against Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Sapp utilized a few pro wrestling moves. (Goldberg was doing commentary and he did a good job of calling the moves by their pro wrestling names.) First, Nogueira tried to charge Sapp and do a double leg take down. Sapp grabbed him and fell back, pretty much piledriving him.

Later on, Nogeuira was on his back and Sapp was standing. Normally, the guy on his feet will end up backing off in this situation because his opponent will keep kicking him if he tries to get in close. Instead, Sapp got pissed off, jumped over Nogueira and punched him in the face.

Most impressively, Nogueira caught Sapp in a triangle choke and Sapp countered by standing up, lifting Noguiera into the air and powerbombing him.

In the end, Sapp tapped to an armbar but it took Nogueira quite a while to finally get Sapp's arm extended. He was using both legs and both arms and Sapp was holding off simply by flexing his arm. Nogueira actually said that he wanted to fight Sapp then while Sapp was still a rookie because he was afraid to see what Sapp would be like once he got experienced within the PRIDE ring.

Looks like Sapp is a huge star over in Japan. While I was looking up how to spell Noguira's name, I saw a link mentioning that Sapp had a victory of Keiji Mutoh. I'm amazed that Vince hasn't gone after this guy.

Vince would have to back up the Brinks truck to get Sapp and there's no way Sapp would work a full schedule.

He's more then a huge star in Japan, he's fast becoming a cultural icon. Heck they even have a Bob Sapp Store in Tokyo. He's got every type of merchandise imaginable, he's on tons of TV shows, he's got loads of endorsements, he's got a rap album, everything.

He fights every now and then and it doesn't really seem to even matter if he loses because he's got so much charisma.

More importantly, what happened to Lynn Ericson!!?!?

But seriously, I remember seeing this interview too, then never hearing from him again. I don't think he even werestled a match. Does anybody know why?

A couple of years back, some friends of mine dared me to do something which we all knew was stupid. So on their urging I signed up to be the sacrificial lamb to fight in Toughman. The night of the weigh-ins they held the festivities at the local Hooters. There was a lot of media in the room because former huge star Fridge Perry was going to be coming to weigh in for his fight against some failed ex-football player the Bears cut one year in training camp. After I weighed in and things calmed down I turned to leave and ran smack hard into what I thought was the wall at first. Then the wall turned and looked at me, and I hastily apologized. The wall was understanding and we chatted for a couple of seconds. As I left three thoughts flashed through my head:
1. Fridge Perry is going to die.
2. Thank goodness this man was so polite, because he looks like he could kill anyone without the slightest effort.
3. Why in the hell is this Bob Sapp guy not a professional wrestler?!

As we've come to see #1 came to pass, #2 is a major part of his allure in Japan (he seems to be huge and scary yet funny and human), and someone else obviously realized the same thing I did about #3 And in retrospect #4 comes to me..."Why didn't I get him to sign an autograph? I could probably sell that thing to someone in Japan for mucho yen!"

Sure, now. But what about back when WCW folded? Didn't they have him under contract and just never use him? Did the contract expire before WCW was bought out? And has anyone seen Sapp's pro wrestling matches? I'm curious as to how well he performs in a staged environment...

Sapp's few wrestling matches are of the worked shoot style with some flash thrown in. It wouldn't translate to the US but like a Goldberg, he's got enough physical charisma that he could get over huge if protected.

I believe Sapp actually met with WWE but they couldn't reach a deal and Sapp went to Japan.

Bob Sapp is going to be on Leno next Monday. That sounds like fun.

Thanks for the link, Spf.

Like Spiff said, we're all awaiting the rationale for Benoit to drop his Heyman/Lesnar hate and run to RAW. it should be as simple as "no one beat me for that WCW belt, and I'd like it back.
