Neil Diamond time! Are you excited? Yeah, me neither. Two songs a piece tonight, which means a lot of running around, and apparently Paula took her meds twice as well. Nobody seems too psyched about any of this. This? Is American Idol.

For his part, Neil Diamond seems pretty low key about the whole thing. Which isn't suprising, considering, but it's bordering on the point of not giving a crap about any of these kids. Also...not really suprising, actually. I do love Neil's crazy shirt collection though. Jay Lethal should steal some of them.

Jason Castro
Singing: "Forever in Blue Jeans" and "September Morn"
Neil Diamond Says: At least he's not singing a song from "Cats" this week.
Performance:
Forever in Blue Jeans: It's a very Castro performance, which I think is wearing pretty thin on everybody right now. It's not horrible or anything, but it's just too mellow and boring for this stage of the competition. I do love that Paula thought this was two different songs (I actually think she was going off her notes from the rehersal, but still....)
September Morn: Here's the funny thing. I think the song sounds really good with this arrangement, but it's not different enough from anything else he's done, which is what's going to kill him in the end. Two really mediocre performances in the top five.
Judges Say: At least you're not singing a song from "Cats" this week.
I Say: Jason Castro is too entrenched in Jason Castro for his own good.
Change: -1
Score: -6

David Lee Cook
Singing: "I'm Alive" and "All I Really Need Is You"
Neil Says: Did I really write those? Oookay.
Performance:
I'm Alive: Yeah, this is one that I don't really know. David Cook is still kind of the show's great white hope, but this is pretty boring. I can't figure out if the "AC" on his guitar and jacket is a shout out to his brother or AC/DC. It could be AC/DC and he's the DC? Meh.
All I Really Need Is You: Hmm...Has he always sounded like he was gargling while he's singing? I think he's overDaughtrified these songs a little too much, and now instead of just singing in his low grumbly voice, he's like...Hacking up the words from the back of his throat. Still, among the better performances of the night.
Judges Say: Second was better than the first, but it really doesn't matter because you're in the finals.
I Say: He really needs to stop trying to overdo these notes.
Change: +/- 0
Score: +6

Brooke White
Singing: "I'm a Believer" and "I Am, I Sad"
Neil Says: I really want to hug you.
Performance:
I'm a Believer: Sadly, she doesn't go for the Smash Mouth cover. That would be hillarious. She looks totally freaked out for the first verse. Poor Brooke. Once she gets to the chorus it levels out, but that first half was just insane.
I Am, I Said: Ah...Brooke back in her element. Behind the piano. She clearly struggles to remember a few lines, but she does a pretty good job. I have to admit, I listened to her pre-Idol CD this week and it all sounds a lot like this, and I really enjoyed it. So, yeah. I'm still worried about her mental health.
The Judges Say: The first song was a whirlwind of suck, but you kind of pulled off that second one.
I Say: Can she just sing piano songs until they send her home?
Change: +1
Score: +/- 0

David Archuleta
Singing: "Sweet Caroline" and "Coming to America"
Neil Says: Your Dad says you're a prodigy, so...There you go.
Performance:
Sweet Caroline: Oh, my God! I do not need to hear Archuletta gasping "Touching you, touching me." What a silly little song this is. Certainly not his best performance, technically or otherwise. And I wish he'd stop touching me.
Coming to America: Straight from the Kristie Lee Cook School of Vote Whoring: David Archuletta sings "Coming to America." Badly. Seriously, straight out of Up With People again. Like...he's at a really bad USO show or something. Simon applauds his balls, and somewhere, Kristie Lee strokes her imaginary horse approvingly.
Judges Say: You're through to the finals, Trollie.
I Say: This reminds me why I never want to go to a USO show.
Change: -1
Score: -3

Syesha Mercado
Singing: "Hello Again" and "Thank the Lord for the Night Time"
Neil Says: I want to hug you too. Where are all the chicks this year?
Performance:
Hello Again: She's doing this entirely from the stoop, which is an interesting choice. She's also not wearing shoes, which is kind of distracting. She looks great though, with her hair like this, she kind of looks like Black Katherine McPhee. Unfortunately, Kat was a better singer.
Thank the Lord for the Night Time: She's still not wearing shoes. Did she break a heel or something? Even she realizes that the little clap fest they're doing is kind of ridiculous. Did we ever get a ruling on whether or not it's ok to sing about the Lord this year? Is it only bad if you're Irish? The performance itself isn't bad. Certainly better than the first one, but still pretty boring. Randy continues to tell her to quit the show and go be on Broadway with Clay and Tamyra. Paula just calls her "Brooke." Oh, Paula.
Judges Say: You're probably going home, y'all.
I Say: Except that, confoundingly, she never does.
Change: +/- 0
Score: -1

Gotta love how they just rushed through everything tonight. "We only have an hour, so nobody move!" Paula was a special kind of drugged up too, talking about rehersals and calling everybody by the wrong name. So, this was pretty much a perfect night for Neil Diamond to be guesting. As for the performances? Pretty mediocre across the board, though Brooke sort of wins with her second. If only this thing weren't killing her.

Bottom Two:

Syesha Mercado
Brooke White

Eliminated:

Syesha Mercado. Look, it kind of has to happen sooner or later, and the poor girl isn't putting up much of a fight. I think she's probably eager to get all her head shots out to all the musicals in New York and LA. Brooke's second performance was strong enough to keep her around one more week, possibly two depending on how well Castro keeps up.

Love me some NEIL~! so this was the first time I watched in three weeks.

A bleh night, though. The last performance was probably my fave, and Brooke's second wasn't bad, but other than that it's a boring bunch when Cook doesn't have a lot to work with, and while he made decent choices tonight it just didn't resonate with me. Besides, why couldn't someone pull out "On the Robert E. Lee?" Or why didn't someone try to murder "Love on the Rocks," a song that can't be sung properly by anyone ever born, including Neil Diamond? Such potential lost.

Most of the people voting probably are not familiar with Neil Diamond and probably aren't really music critics. So I wonder how much simply singing a song the voters have actually heard plays into it. Even though "I'm a Believer" was craptastic it was by far the most well known song to those voting thanks to the Smash Mouth cover.

Neil Diamond? Ooooooookay. Only two songs performed by him that I really like: Sweet Caroline and Coming to America. I certainly hope Archuleta the Wonder B!tch doesn't do them. Hmmm? What's that?

Jason- OK, I kinda like Forever in Blue Jeans, too, but only when Will Farrell does it. The hippe, soft voice isn't gonna cut it with Neil songs, but I kinda liked them. Maybe he should have brought out the ukelele again?

David- Second one way better than the first. Neil does not mesh well with David's style.

Brooke- Way to destroy I'm a Believer! At least you didn't start over halfway through the song this week.

Spawn of Satan- Seriously, you suck for ruining those songs. I'm just glad you didn't go "Baaaa baaaa baaaaaaa" and "so good so good so good" during the chorus of Sweet Caroline but you should be banished to the pits of hell for that abomination on Coming to America.

Syesha- Continues to impress. I don't think Neil Diamond worked for anyone tonight, but she came the closest, IMO. Looks like Dialidol agrees.

My favorite performer of the night was definitely Paula, who began commenting on Jason Castro's second song.....after he had only sung once. I'll have whatever she's having.

I dunno - I thought most everyone was pretty good, except Jason's "September Morn" and Brooke's "I'm a Believer". I think Jason is just rready to get the hell out of there, knowing there's no way he's winning. Brooke is so wildly uncharismatic that I can't handle her on my TV any more. IJ: "Brooke White needs to go home now." Yup.

I have to give Syesha credit. The longer she's been on the better she's been. It would be a shame if she got sent home this week instead of Brooke or Jason.

The format was pretty effed up this week. I agree Paula was looking at notes from rehearsals, but still, DAMN. That chick is a wreck. Here's what I don't get - they had ten singers perform with comments after each performance, right? Why suddenly this week did they have to rush through the performances and skip over comments the first half of the show? They put three performances back-to-back-to-back (I don't remember that EVER happening before) and STILL ended up overrunning by about three minutes. Odd.

The common problem with Archuletta, Brooke, and Jason is that they have no idea how to sing a song that isn't a breathy ballad. They can't belt.

Archuletta killed "Comin to America" because he's singing when he should be shouting.

When Brooke sings something uptempo, she doesn't have the energy to match the beat; she always sings slow.

Jason is perpetually half-assing his way through the songs -- doesn't help that he sings out of the corner of one mouth. His body language is atrocious.

Syesha's issue may be that she belts too much, but she's a refreshing singer after three soft-sound crooners. She's singing to the back row, which is what these folks need to do every time they're on stage. Maybe Simon's "cabaret" comment about singers who hold the mic away on big notes spooked these kids. But her last song was a party, and that's something Archuletta, for example, can't muster. "Comin to America" is an anthem, and he sung it like a love song.

And then there's David Cook. It's as much a matter of packaging as skill to say that Archuletta looks and sounds like a high-school talent-show contestant compared to Cook's stadium-rock demeanor. But Cook is genuinely years beyond Archuletta. He's ready to sell out a tour right now. His second song -- honest to God, before he hit the chorus, he won the show. That song, as Simon noted, sounds brand-new. It's ready for radio.

My bottom two are Jason and Brooke only because I know Archuletta isn't going anywhere. My dread fear is that Syesha will be sacrificed on the altar of grade-school crushes for Jason and Archuletta.

I'm not even worried about Cook; if he gets cut -- and I'd bet he's not the Idol -- he's still ultimately going to be the last one laughing.

They only ran over by one minute (they had a 62-minute slot) but I'm pretty sure that the show with 10 performers was a two hour show.

I didn't know that about the scheduled overrun, and you're probably right about the two-hour show (man, those were SO LONG), and I would NEVER suggest that less N.D. was a good thing, but they COULD have been a little more liberal editing the vignettes, then.

I totally agree with you, but don't the judges prefer/want the contestants to do their own spin of the song and not to karaoke it (as Simon always likes to say).

They should put a stamp on it, but David isn't the kind of singer to do that. Neither is Jason. They know one style and can't move out of it. That's what sunk Brooke too.

Poor Brooke.

Hopefully she can go someplace less crazy! I'm still listening to her old CD, and it's really pretty good. I'm kind of hoping she actually goes into the whole "Music" thing, instead of showing up hosting Idol Extras with Constantine next year.

I've been wondering if there are an awful lot of Cheetos stained cell phones out there, or if he's really getting that many votes from the young girls.

It's not like it matters at this point anyway. It's pretty well set in stone that he and Syesha will go the next two weeks.

So that means we get to suffer through albums from the two David's before Christmas. Yippie.

That would mean you would have to actually buy them or listen to a station that would play that claptrap. Luckily, I won't be doing either. I like to say (with a few exceptions) that all music stopped in the 1980s for me. For instance, I always listen to XM44 which right now is playing The Clash's "Ivan Meets GI Joe." So good.
