Wednesday December 1st: New comics ship, including Y: The Last Man #29, and the debuts of New Avengers (from Brian Michael Bendis & David Finch) and Ultimates 2 (from Mark Millar & Bryan Hitch).
It's gonna be a great week.

I fall back upon the Ramp-Up Rule. Bendis, similar to Geoff Johns, seems to need about 5 issues to ramp up to something good. I provide Ultimate Spider-Man, Daredevil, Alias, Powers and...uh...well, that's about it for evidenciary support.
But heck, ULTIMATES! And Marvel's promising that it's shipping ON TIME (READ: MONTHLY) for at least the first 5 or 6 issues.

I thought 'on time' meant every six weeks like IRON MAN.

I mean, he DOES have people to answer to, and we don't know the full story. We can't make the assumption that it all was entirely HIS idea to do such things as kill off Hawkeye and other such nonsense.
Hell, I don't necessarily think Avengers: Disassembled was all that bad.

He said on his message board that, indeed, the entire storyline was his idea. He asked Marvel for a list of characters he could kill off, and Hawkeye was on it.
And the recurring explanation behind ending Avengers Volume 3 was that, similar to Alias, that the story running through the comic had ended and a new one was beginning.

| #7 Posted on 2.12.04 1900.31 | Instant Rating: 8.05 | So, now that they are out, anybody read the titles Freeway mentioned?
Ultimates was pretty solid. Millar set up a ton of potential plot lines going forward - Thor, Hulk, and Cap / Wasp all played prominent roles - and it will be interesting to see if he can wrap them up in only 12 issues. I got a real kick out of Captain America's more military-style armor and costume, too.
New Avengers - far better than "Disassembled," and it made total sense how all of the main characters wound up together on the "Raft." Finch's art was also very enjoyable without the forced reds and mystic blue-grays of the prior storyline. Lots of questions, too...who's the shadowy figure, and who was Electro there to rescue (he even called him "sir?") I'll give writer Brian Michael Bendis credit for a bit of a rebound, but I will still need more before my wallet grants him total exoneration.
Y: The Last Man - "I know how you survived the plague." Well, damn, now I gotta wait at least another month to find out? Cliffhanger of the week.

Superman/Batman #14 and 15 are actually a rather interesting story, if you haven't picked them up. As is the GL Rebirth story.
Oh, and pick up a copy of Deadshot #1.

| #9 Posted on 3.12.04 0111.40 | Instant Rating: 7.03 | Hey, along with Spider-Man 2, I saw that they're pushing a "Director's Cut" edition of Daredevil this week. I've looked around (okay, spent five minutes) looking for details on how this edition differs from the previous release. Anyone have the lowdown? I'm sure it has extra garbage like "making of Bullseye's forehead imprint", but I'd be interested in details on any new movie footage.
I've sat through some stinkers and plunked down good money for awful titles (I followed Azrael religiously for all 100 issues), but so far I think Green Lantern: Rebirth is a whopping load of crap. Sinestro's returing in issue 3? No way... never expected THAT. Never.
For all the effort and hype they're giving Rebirth, wihin three years another "Green Lantern" series will be languishing on the rack with little fanfare.

| #10 Posted on 3.12.04 0148.45 | Instant Rating: 5.36 | New Avengers & Ultimates 2 begin the fight for my love. Ultimates 2 had some awesome Ultimate continuity, but the Bendis fan inside me LOVED all the internal logic and continuity of New Avengers. And Y: The Last Man made me mental with geek love.
I spent the day reading old Bendis Daredevil. Bendis needs an arc to ramp up the stories. He seems to lay groundwork, then build upon it afterwards. Other examples of the exact same thing include Alias, Ultimate Spider-Man, Powers...basically every monthly comic he's ever done.
Y: The Last Man continues to be one of the three best serialized stories in comics (along with Ex Machina & 100 Bullets), since it continues to build on what's been done before and chug gradually towards the conclusion (in issue #60).

| #12 Posted on 4.12.04 1020.19 | Instant Rating: 3.81 | I like this new forum and won't post too much about comic books. (My workplace has banned the internet, but our secretary can still play Solitare all day...)
Bendis is only good for police stories. The best Ulitimate story was Ultimate Six and Millar may have had more to do with that one.
The new FF still has Waid-great writing and a Galactus story, but the price hike to 2.99 is a bit much. The Amazing Spiderman conclusion bothered me, too much Norman Osborn, I wanted the Jackal.
The Batman War Games story was very good, I recommend picking up the trades that will be out soon. I read the Hulk trades it only took about an hour each. A Bruce Jones Hulk book has hardly any dialogue the whole thing reads in 4 minutes, it can only be read as a trade.
