I work at a gas station, and if somebody came in and stole a pack of smokes, I wouldn't do what that clerk did. What is the point of getting the license plate over 3 dollars or whatever? It's not like they would go to jail for more than a few hours anyway.

You're not considering the whole picture. Business owners, especially when they own convenience stores, get tired of being ripped off REALLY QUICKLY, it happens almost hourly. Because a $3 pack of smokes among other things -- when stolen on a regular basis by any number of faceless "customers" -- adds up VERY fast. It cuts into their profits, it cuts into their overhead and it cuts into their payroll. Most major department store chains prosecute shoplifters for even taking a 33 cent pack of gum because it ALL ADDS UP.
I think the clerk acted really responsibly, because you can bet your behind that no one will try to shoplift from that store again any time soon if they heard this little news iteam.
It may end up hurting syndication, but not for a long time. If you look at what is being released on DVD, it's still only a handful of shows. Add to that the fact that DVD players are not as prevalent in the home as TV sets are.
