Hopefully someone else will have some time saved when this post makes it into the mighty G engine.
Right around version 5.1.0681, the genii at Microsoft decided to disable the ability for hyperlinks to actually display as linkified text in Windows Messenger chats. (I'm currently running...lemme check...5.1.0701, okay.) Turns out that this CAN be re-enabled, but only if you Google JUST the right set of words and learn that this registry key needs to be created:
Stop and restart Windows Messenger for it to take effect.
I eventually found this with the unoriginal Google search '"windows messenger 5.1" hyperlinks' and used result #38 or so at http://usenet.p2preactor.com/index-t-1581987.html which is a USENET gateway. The M$ guy who posted in that thread also linked to a .reg file you can download and run if you're spooked by the prospect of running REGEDIT.
Oh, so, the millions of porn bots in the chats lose there posting powser and become useless. Linked text sent after version 5.1.0681 basically shows up on your screen but isn't clickable. Ok...well, glad I don't use the messenger.

always fun trying to find this sort of arcane info about products you can fix, but the developers don't want you to fix. The message balloons at the task bar in windows has a similar fix (I have that link and registry fix as well somewhere - I may have even received it here).
On another note - why would Messenger do that? Seems counter productive?
On a further note: We have a bunch of IM software: AIM, Windows Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, ICQ engines of various sort - and some Independents - why choose one above the other - or do you have to run all of them to find all your buddies? Is there one that you can connect to AIM and Yahoo and Windows messengerservers? Do you think one has the absolute best features?
Ok, I could google this, but I am looking more for opinions, I guess. Maybe this should be in the internet and computers forum - but Zed sparked me.
We'll be back right after order has been restored here in the Omni Center.

Those things annoy the hell out of me. Any chance of posting the fix here?
At work, we are mandated to use Windows Messenger; otherwise I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole. (I still run AIM, but as they have blocked port 5190, they MAY be trying to send a message... which I am ignoring, and AIM has long since found other ways [and ports] to help people log on).
At home, I'm on the Mac, and I heartily endorse the all-in-one Adium X (adiumx.com), which allows me to ignore people on AIM, Y!, ICQ, MSN AND the occasional Jabber server simultaneously!
