Not entirely unexpectedly, given the past few years of nothingness, the White Stripes officially announced today that they're breaking up. Their official website is down right now but Stereogum has the details, including a screenshot of the message that the band posted earlier today.
I'm a big White Stripes fan and was wondering about the potential for a new album just the other day while watching Wanda Jackson and Jack White on Conan. They'd issued a $500 box set for Christmas (including headphones and a record player) and had said they'd reunite once it sold out. I just checked and it's not available online anymore, but that might be a recent development.
Maybe I've just lived a sheltered life (yes) but I'd never heard anything quite like them and took an instant liking to their music. I still love their albums and was lucky enough to see them live on Canada Day a few years ago (back in the days before I crossposted my concert reviews here) in what was easily one of my favourite concert-going experiences ever. So while not surprising, this is still disappointing news.
"It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone." --- Bart Giamatti, on baseball
The biggest selling albums in Britain (afp.com) We all know that the Beatles were better then Oasis, but (the) Queen beats them all! Queen's Greatest Hits is highest selling album in Britain with 5.4 million albums sold.
