Ho boy.

"A study by the Star has found that this year's edition of the Blue Jays had the fewest number of visible minorities on the opening-day roster of any of the 30 major-league teams. A Toronto club that boasted of its diversity in recent radio ads actually had the visible-minority players on its 25-man roster drop from 11 on opening day a year ago to only six this season."

....

"And the facts show the Jays took a dramatic, economically beneficial turn toward a much whiter roster after J.P. Ricciardi was named general manager in November 2001. Of the 39 players Ricciardi has since acquired through trades, free agency or waiver claims, 36 of them 92 per cent are white."

Usually the best time for a study to declare racism is when the team goes from good to bad, not when they are having their best season in a decade. Unless of course, the Star is trying to placate White Supremecist groups, in which case, nice time for the study.

This might be the stupidest thing I've ever read.

What is this story supposed to prove? Are they saying that JPR is a Nazi or something? Seeing as how the two best Jays players (Delgado and Wells) are black, this doesn't exactly prove much.

The story goes onto say that "more roster diversity would lead to greater attendance from Toronto's ethnic community." I'm kind of doubtful about this. First of all, WINNING GAMES leads to better attendance, bottom line. Second, I'm a Ukrainian-Canadian...if the Jays signed a Uke-Nuck to their team, that wouldn't exactly make me rush out and buy season tickets.

Stewie: Ahahaha. Oh God, that's funny. That's really funny. You write your own material? Do you? Because that is so fresh. 'You are the weakest link. Goodbye!' You know I've never heard anyone make that joke before. You're the first. I've never heard anyone reference that outside program before. Because that's what she says on the show, right? Hmmm? 'You are the weakest link. Goodbye!' And ye...ye..yet you've taken it and....and used it out of context to insult me in this everyday situation. What a clever, smart girl you must be. To come up with a joke like that all by yourself. Mmmmm...that's so fresh too. Any Titanic jokes you want to throw at me as long as we're hitting these phenomena at the height of their popularity. I'm just shaking my head at the stupidity of this column.

Whats the deal of this article. The Jays are over-achieving with their roster and the free agents that were brought in recently Frank Catalanotto, Greg Myers, Tom Wilson, Mike Bordick and last year Eric Henske have delivered. Which the article itself said so.

Real funny take RedSoxNation LoL. This study concludes Whites > Blacks. Well as crazy as that sounds, it's just as stupid to write an entire article pretty much calling the GM a racist.

Yeah...and the team is in 3rd place with a shot to make the playoffs for hte first time in a decade. I love it when journalists make asinine politically correct statements for no reason.

I always figured that an NBA team like the Mavs would be the first team to get *nailed* by something like this. I bet you the guy that wrote this is white.

Partially relating to what BigDaddyLoco said, there was a great letter in the Toronto Star the other day complaining about this story and asking if the sports department at the Star "accurately reflects Toronto's diversity." Hee hee. Another letter asked "what next, a story about how all the Maple Leafs are white, or how most of the Raptors are black?"

It was the most pointless article I've ever read. Who the hell ever noticed the ethnic makeup of the Blue Jays? The Star just wanted to sell some papers with this.

Fortunately, the reaction from fans, the Jays, and other media has been "What the fuck?" The Toronto Star's credibility has been damaged.

Here's a link to some of the letters. I'm guessing the juicier ones weren't printed. My favourite line that hadn't been mentioned already.

"And if it is the Jays' responsibility to represent the diversity of Toronto, what about the Star's?

Your coverage of soccer and cricket is not at all proportionate to the interest shown in those sports by the multicultural patrons of this city."

I think Carlos Delgado put it best:

"It was probably the stupidest thing I've ever seen. If this city is so multicultural, if this city is so open-minded, why do we have to come up with an article that talks about racism? It doesn't make any sense."

Don't know if it's a coincidence or not. But the Jays have been in a total tailspin ever since this story came out.
