I have been amused in social media at the hate for both sides of this issue.

I am friends with both supporters (Wall supporters and The other side) My local TV station posted a story with Sen Shumer and Rep Pelosi and their democratic response to President Trump's speech - and within 20 mins there were 3500 comments - I read through them and NOT ONE discussed any issue rationally. They were all a mixture of "Build the wall" and "Impeach Him!"

When did this not being able to discuss our government issues start? It seems to get worse every year.

I do feel sorry for the Government workers who aren't getting paid though - and may not be for a while yet.

Surely one of the reasons for putting up with a government job is job security in exchange for higher salary, ball pits, espresso machines and the like.

Hope their finances are OK for this kind of thing. You'd hate to miss mortgage payments and lose your house.

As to the answer of your question - I don't know. It seems to be the English speaking world all over. Discussion has become repeatedly shouting the same view over an over.

We had Neo Nazi's in my suburb over the weekend. So there was that?

The Malaysian King had to resign over this kind of dialog, right?

I've pretty much cut social media out of my life, so I'm curious as to what rational arguments you think people should be making over this?

Walls make us safer?

You volunteered to be a political hostage when you took that federal job?

Uh... yeah, that's all I got.

This started in December, under a completely Republican controlled congress. They decided to pass the buck and not work on fixing it. Now we have a Democratic led House that's already passed a clean funding bill to get federal employees back to work. Just needs Republicans (read: Mitch McConnell) to actually allow a vote on it in the Senate. If Trump wants to negotiate, and get one of his "best deals" for the wall, he should probably do that without threatening the country as a whole and directly harming 800,000 federal workers in the process.

But he hasn't, and the Republicans won't. I'm guessing Trump declares a state of emergency to steal funds from somewhere else for the wall and call it a win. Of course, it will definitely have to go to the courts, but hopefully Trump/McConnell will at least end the shutdown in the meantime.

IIRC, Alberta is the province that produces nearly all of Canada's oil. Canada's Texas, if you will. As such, I think they nearly always come out ahead. I think.
