I have both Safari and Firefox on my Mac, and when I open the W in both side by side, the logo at the top appears different. The one in Firefox is slightly more narrow but the lines are much thicker than the one in Safari. Is this because of some difference between the two browsers or something on my computer?

OK, so immediately before I posted this, I refreshed the one in safari to make sure the image hadn't been changed in that short time, and it stayed the same. Then, right after I posted this, I refreshed Safari again and the logo changed to match the one in Firefox. I swear I'm not crazy. Anyway, what causes that to happen. If the answer is caches or something, I have no idea what that means and am curious.

You're not the only one who see this kind of thing. The logos look different in Safari on my G4 and in Netscape & IE on my G3. (Not a clue as to why, though.)

The easy (but not necessarily correct) answer is different rendering libraries.

Microsoft and Apple both include libraries for rendering image files to the display. You may remember some months ago a Windows security patch for the "GDI+ Library". This is the library that programs written to the Windows API (Application Programming Interface) use when they want to display a JPEG or a GIF or a PNG or whatever.

It is possible that Firefox includes an image rendering library compiled right in so that it doesn't rely on the one provided by Windows. Or that each program is calling the included library functions slightly differently. Or the layout engine in each browser is somehow "tweaking" the image somehow.

This doesn't explain why BucsFan saw the "Firefox version" in Safari on that last refresh, though...

Dunno...I'd need to see some screen captures to be sure. Got any?

NOW, it's the same in both of my browsers (Safari & IE). Did you do something or was it...MAGIC?

Wasn't me. Maybe you had a really old, yet similar looking daily logo in the cache or something. They're SUPPOSED to change every 24 hours, Mr. Rapp's clever Apache directives notwithstanding. :)

Mozilla based browsers, like Firefox, use the libpr0n porn image rendering library.
