I just felt like making a post on how great these guys are. The Strokes are the best new band that I've heard in years. I once again have faith in new music...it won't all suck from here on out! Also there video for 'Someday' is fun, and makes me wish I was at the pub with them.

I guess this is a rhetorical question.

Can it really be considered "new music" if they utterly, completely, and shamelessly rip off old bands?

Thou shalt not mistake inspiration for mind-numbingly pretentious raping of style.

Mattitude is a quality that can help anyone -- regardless of background or past -- to achieve success. You just have to make it a lifestyle, a mindset, a religion. In the ring, Mattitude is the intangible, the x-factor, that gives me an advantage over everyone else.

I bought their album because of all the hype and I really, truly gave it a shot. I WANTED to like The Strokes. But after hearing the whole album several times, I couldn't figure out why I was subjecting myself to such brain-dead, shitty sounding music and I sold it back to Hastings.

Think of it like this: If they get the kids into VU and the other bands they appropriate, is it that bad that they rip them off?

Personally, I like them, but I know they're, ahem, "heavily influenced" by these other bands. Big friggin' deal.

I don't care if they're a full-blown cover band. Anything that gets some of the spotlight off the never-ending stream of sound-alike "My daddy didn't love me" nu-metal bands can't possibly be anything but a good thing.

That goes for the White Stripes. The Hives, The Vines, OKGO, Thirty Seconds To Mars, And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, et al.

And the best part? These bands kick ass!

I'm surprised by all the Strokes backlash...

Can it really be considered "new music" if they utterly, completely, and shamelessly rip off old bands?

Can you really name a band that is actually doing 'it's own thing' these days. Considering most bands are ripping off 90's bands such as AIC, Nirvana and some are going so far as to covering Pearl Jam songs already.

I couldn't figure out why I was subjecting myself to such brain-dead, shitty sounding music and I sold it back to Hastings.

This is surprising considering most of the newer music I hear these days falls under the same exact category. I'm actually curious to see which newer bands you consider to be nonbraindead and shitty sounding.

I still stand by my statement that The Strokes are the best new band that I'VE heard in sometime. I'm interested in who many of you think surpasses them.

Of the "new" bands, I'd rank the Strokes behind the Doves and the White Stripes.

I never understood the VU/Iggy comparisons for them. They just sound like Pavement. VU/Iggy/NYDOlls/whoever they're supposed to be the second coming of had you know, attitude.

There's plenty of great new music out there(Tarantella Serpentine, Mechanical Cabaret, The Faint, Caesar's Palace) if you know where to look as well as plenty of old good stuff that's big elsewhere(usually UK and/or Germany) just not in the US(Primal Scream, FIscherspooner, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, And One.)

I still insist Hot Snakes is a better group in this vein of music. Haven't really heard anyone else make reference to them before. If you're curious and do the file swapping thing, check out "Suicide Invoice", "LAX", or "Ben Gurion".
