Have watched a few of the matches from the extra section and watched the History of the AWA from the Chapters.
Some thoughts from it:
It is entirely understandable watching this DVD why Jim Ross has been fired so often in wrestling. Never worked for the AWA, but has no problem bad mouthing Verne. His criticizing the decision to put the AWA World Title on Rick Martel is funny. Now, I know he wasn't the sort of draw that the One Man Gang or Lord Humongous was, but, Martel was a nice solid wrestler who actually had a decent World Title reign. Then, he talks about how the UWF didn't take part in SuperClash III in '88 because it was a desperation show etc. Now, that would have been good thinking by the UWF if it hadn't been bought by Crockett over a year earlier and been completely out of existence by December of '88. Maybe JR should just go back to lusting after men named Steve Williams.
Nick Bockwinkel comes out of this great. Not a negative word said about him and still is classy during the many points where he discusses the AWA.
Interesting point/counterpoint about the Hogan departure and the timing of it, particularly the series of matches that were scheduled before Hogan jumped ship.
Clip shown of the night the Midnight Rockers bled in white, but the Somers/Rose vs. Midnight Rockers match from X-Mas night is shown in its entirety. Camera work in the cage match is subpar compared to the WWF, Crockett, World Class and UWF from that time period. Likewise a clip from the ESPN Hennig/Bockwinkel draw is shown, but the entire SuperClash II match is aired. Plenty of seats available for SuperClash II.
Surprising they picked 2 Baron Von Raschke matches.
Show the entire match where Heenan becomes Bockwinkel/Stevens manager, with the added bonus of seeing a very young Greg Gagne get destroyed in the match.
Jumbo Tsuruta is only displayed in a clip of him losing the title to Martel while not a mention of my favorite champion Otto Wanz.
An unadvertised appearance by Dr. D David Schultz might be the first time he has appeared on anything WWF related in over 20 years.
Very understated music in the portion of the DVD where you choose what you plan on viewing next.
Bischoff actually is classy in this DVD, the antithesis of Jim Ross. Denies being the creator of the Team Challenge Series, and, while they show clips of its finale, no Turkey on a Pole, which was very disappointing.
Some interesting stories about Pro Wrestling USA mentioned.
Very awkward when guys try to avoid using the term WWF when talking about the AWA's competition.
If you are in your early 20's or younger, this probably won't entertain you.
If you are in your mid 20's through mid 30's, it is hit or miss depending upon the style of wrestling you started watching.
If you are in your mid 30's or older, you will greatly appreciate this DVD.
Chapters and some bonus material on Disc 1, 13 matches on Disc 2.
Match Listing and Dates:
High Flyers vs. Bockwinkel/Stevens 8/23/71
Verne Gagne vs. Baron Von Raschke 7/13/74
Pat Patterson/Ray Stevens vs. Billy Robinson/Frankie Hill 5/20/78
Verne Gagne/Mad Dog Vachon vs. Ventura/Adonis 3/22/80
Verne Gagne vs. Nick Bockwinkel 5/10/81.
High Flyers vs. Ventura/Adonis 8/30/81.
Bockwinkel vs. Hogan 4/18/82.
Ventura vs. Baron Von Raschke 3/16/83.
Hogan vs. Saito and Mr. Hatori 8/28/83.
Road Warriors and Ellering vs. Crusher/Larry Hennig/Curt Hennig 1/13/85.
Midnight Rockers vs. Rose/Somers 12/25/86.
Curt Hennig vs. Bockwinkel 5/2/87.
Lawler vs. Kerry Von Erich 12/13/88.

FYE had the DVD cheap last week Z if you are looking for it. Either that or the spend option has it, but Amazon actually is about 8 bucks more than FYE on this one.

I bet you edit this post later!

Anyway, you're ahead of me - this is the second week in a row Best Buy hasn't seen fit to stock the thing. (Supposedly you can get it from bestbuy.com, but I don't believe in impulse purchasing from bestbuy.com) At this point, I will probably just not get it when it comes out (but may yet buy it as a gift for a relative/big-time AWA fan I know).

Hey, check for yourself (bestbuy.com). Gotta be a Best Buy thing - I was in Modesto, CA last week and they had zero copies in that store, too.

I saw it in the Best Buy here in St. Cloud last week, but if I hadn't asked my brother for it for X-Mas, I would have bought it. I can wait until X-Mas. It'll be just like when he and I were kids, AWA, Sunday Morning, 10 am, just home from church, mom's dinner cooking in the background. Mmmmmmmm......I feel like I'm 10 again.

The thing that sticks in my head is HHH's persistant chase of the 17 career title reigns... I think he is going to lose only to win it back a month later.
