Despite working open-to-close shifts yesterday and today, my nineteen year Simpsons fandom required me to take in the midnight showing of their first movie last night. It's rare to go into a movie with mile-high expectations and have them completely blown away but that's exactly what happened.

I still enjoy the show, but I'll be the first to say the movie was funnier than it's been in a decade. I laughed so hard my sides hurt. That's an old cliche, but in this instance it was actually literally true.

Every major character gets at least one really good line - virtually every character ever on the show got face time, at least in a crowd scene. (No Phil Hartman characters, obviously. No Kang and Kodos. And no Sideshow Bob. But damn near everyone else. Handsome Pete and Gabbo made it, for god's sake!)

Seriously, I cannot recommend this enough. And I doubt I really have to.

I'm sure you didn't mean to, but you just ruined the movie for me. No Sideshow Bob? Seriously?

BEST...MOVIE...EVER!

Had just about everything I was looking for in a Simpsons movie. Sideshow Bob's been confirmed for next season, along with a re-appearance by brother Cecil and the first appearance of their father (!), so I'm not too upset by his absence. The only trouble with a 90-minute film and a cast of roughly 100 characters is that it's tough to distribute the face time. Mr. Burns got only about a minute of screen time (which he really made count, by the way). Comic Book Guy got less than that (though he made the most of his screen time). Actually, that seems to be the theme. Every one of the supporting cast members got very little screen time, but they all made their scenes count. Martin's scene towards the end was nothing short of AWESOME! Ditto for Cletus.

MVP for me goes to Albert Brooks' Evil EPA Guy. I just wish that since they HAD brought Brooks on board that they would have resurrected his Hank Scorpio character, but beggars can't be choosers.

Go see this movie yesterday!

Spoiler Below: Highlight text to read
Maggie's first word during the credits was "sequel". I can definitely see them doing one, but that'll mean a HUGE payday for the main voice cast.

A BIG thumbs up for me. I saw the noon showing today and can;t wait to see it again. As stated, the best part was every character had one great line (LOVED the one with Karl and Lenny) and made it count.

The movie moved very fast and I laughed out loud too many times to count. The person next to me was laughing just as hard which made it more enjoyable because there is nothing worse than a dirty look from someone who is not enjoying the movie as much as you are.

Martin's scene was AWESOME!! Just awesome. Even Rod and Todd had their moment.

I can not recommend this movie enough. My expectations were through the roof and this movie delivered.

This is not a spoiler but watch the credits as they list the actors name(voice) and the characters they voice. Quite impressive.

I will probably let this sink in for a few days and see it again next week.

GO SEE THIS MOVIE!

Count me in as another who loved the movie. A lot of great laugh-out-loud lines, particularly Martin's "I like boys now" and Flanders' line about his son having the devil's curly hair. And though I had seen a lot of it in the trailers, Homer's relationship with Spider-Pig was hilarious.

Is there any doubt it'll be John Mahoney? Anyone? Anyone?

DING DING DING! We have a winner!

The panel then revealed that Sideshow Bob (voiced by Kelsey Grammer) will make a return next season, as will his brother Cecil (voiced by David Hyde Pierce). The episode also marks the introduction of their father, who will be voiced by John Mahoney. It's a Frasier family reunion.

I don't know....I almost feel BAD for saying that it didn't live up to my expectations, though they were quite high. I expected (and thought I'd heard somewhere) more celebrity voices and like most, there were some characters I thought should've gotten more screen time.

And I agree with It's False- in fact, during the movie, I thought Brooks' EPA character would've fit Hank Scorpio perfectly.

I'll be interested to see how much continuity they keep with this movie and the TV show (i.e. Dr. Nick dying, et. al). I just hate for this to be like the TV show- "something wild and crazy happens, but by the end, everything is back to normal like it never happened."

I'd give it 8/10 for sure, but I don't know, the reviews had me expecting something different, I guess. Not better, but different.

This movie was really in two halves for me - during first half I laughed the hardest I've laughed in a theater in a very long time. The second was a lot more plot driven, and less funny and entertaining - than the first. Had the first half not been there, I'm not sure I would have enjoyed this movie all that much.

According to Roger Ebert, they brought back a ton of people who have produced episodes of the show in the past. I am really curious as to who worked on what - because I really thought some stuff was brilliant, and other stuff was further evidence as to why this show isn't funny any more.

Don't get me wrong, I thought it was entertaining - and certainly better than a lot of stuff out there right now.

And of course, my biggest complaint - no lines for Disco Stu.

The wife and I both loved it, that includes a die-hard fan (me, duh) and a casual fan (her). I think I liked it much more than I thought I would, as my interest in the show has gone down the last few years, but still love the DVDs of the classic stuff. I would give it 3 out of 4 stars, and would see it again.

I had heard we would get the Dark Knight teaser trailer, but we didn't. However, we did get the trailer for the Rock movie about a football player who becomes a single dad. It, as you could imagine, looked TERRIBLE.

In the theatre, I had two friends sitting to my right. These guys LOVED this movie and laughed uproariously at every single joke. Even the ones from the trailers. Even the ones that weren't funny. My girlfriend was sitting to my left, and I am not certain that she laughed once through the whole movie. Fittingly, I was in between them. I didn't hate this by any stretch - I thought it was mostly pretty good.

But is "mostly pretty good" good enough? It's hard to say with the Simpsons. The best Simpsons episodes are still really really amazingly great, even if you've seen them 50 times. But the worst episodes are just painful - more painful because the greatness was once there and the potential for greatness is always there. The movie certainly didn't come close to the best episodes, but at least it didn't come close to the worst episodes.

I'm reminded of Clerks 2. In both cases, the funny parts are well and truly funny, but in both, there are some attempted jokes that bomb so horribly that it hurts to watch them. Which makes it hard not to feel at least slightly disappointed - some jokes in the best Simpsons episodes or the first Clerks are funnier than others, but there were never any that hurt because they sucked so bad. Having said that, the Simpsons Movie was much better and much funnier than Clerks 2, and the hit-to-miss ratio is much higher.

I don't want to completely rag on this movie. I'm glad I saw it, it was worth the money (thank you, ghetto theatre), it had some genuinely funny lines, and it beat my lowered expectations. It just kind of sucks that my expectations were so lowered to begin with.

Oh my god were the trailers before the actual movie excruciating.

I don't think Julie Kavner gets enough credit, that scene of Marge on the tape was genuinely moving in a time long-removed from feeling any kind of real emotional attachment to the characters.

Still, it felt like half the best jokes were already in the previews.

The only trailer I remember seeing the other day was the Golden Compass, which I cautiously look forward to seeing. I didn't get there in time to possibly see the Batman trailer.

I guess I'm with KJames in that I thought Simpsons was a pretty good movie, but not great. Unlike KJames though, my problem was that the movie didn't reach my loftier expectations. They went too often to the "physical humor is always better" playbook, although I will admit that the theater I was in cracked up every time Homer got hit over the head with something. I got bored with it though.

The best line of the movie for me was a throw-away line, and I think I was one of the only ones to catch it. As the Simpson clan minus Homer is in the paddywagon, the guards driving stopped at the "Sop" sign. The one then goes, to paraphrase (cause I can't remember the exact wording), "We shouldn't keep stopping at all the sops, Yeld, and One Vey signs." I was dying with laughter.

Still, thumbs up for the Simpsons movie as a whole. Bring on The Bourne Ultimatum.

Then you were spared the full "Alvin and the Chipmunks" trailer, complete with an extended poop joke and the announcement that Jim Carrey is going to fuck up another Dr. Suess book.

Wow...I know this is gonna be really, really bad...but can you really say no to a cast that includes Jim Carrey, Steve Carell, Seth Rogen, Jamie Pressly, and Will Arnett?

If it turns out to be shit (like I sense it will), I'll have no one but myself to blame.

I loved Underdog as a kid, as well as the Chipmunks. But I just have bad feelings about both of theses movies. I can't help but think of how Bullwinkle and Dudley Do Right turned out (Two of my other favorites).
