Ow WOW! Ninety minutes of the suckiest "jokes" known to Man instead of twenty! The Simpsons BURNT me, man. I used to LOVE it. Worship it even. But these days-the crap they put out? It's like torture! Where's the subtlety? Where's the character? Where's the satire? It's nowhere, or buried beneath the lame "topical" gags, pointless "Hey look, it's (someone you've never heard of)!" cameos and totally implausible plots. The Simpsons was funny because it said more about life-in heightened fashion, of course-than almost every other comedy on TV. Now it's just crap. They should've pulled the plug long ago.

Are the current writers even capable of producing an entertaining script at feature film length though? The quality of episodes seriously declined after series 7 in my opinion, if not sooner. This idea is probably six or seven years too late.

I don't care how much some people think this show sucks now, compared to back in the good ol' days...it's still arguably the funniest thing on TV (ignoring Mark Henry matches, yuck yuck). There's a good chance a feature film won't do much to offend the comedy gods...despite some people's most ardent efforts to the contrary.
As much as I STILL love the Simpsons, I am not really looking forward to the movie for some reason.
I'm a little younger, and I really only started watching the Simpsons around Season 10 or 11, plus catching all the older stuff on syndacation. I think I've seen every episode now, and I don't know what it is, but I like the newer stuff better than the earlier episodes. Maybe it's the voices, or the animation....or maybe it's just that I don't find alot of the older stuff that funny. I guess I'm the exception to the "Simpsons jumped the shark" theory.

Didn't I read somewhere that one of the show's original writers returned to the staff for this season? Even though I would never say that the past few Simpsons seasons were terrible, there has been a marked improvement in the quality of the writing this year ... I would definitely recommend people who have abandoned the show as "no longer funny" to check out some of the new episodes and see if they don't change your opinion.

Just so you guys know: 75% of this crap [you read on the internet] is made up, either by the writer, or the wrestler the writer is getting the dirt from. Just so you know. -- Statement by "Tammy Sytch", from Hyatte's Dec. 29th column ... Lest we forget.

I don't know, I think it's more an issue of consistency really. I don't think the writers have produced any consistently good episodes in a series for a number of years now. Maybe they can produce a great movie, as they'll be restricted to 80-90 minutes for one general plot line, and they'll want to make something special.
"it's still arguably the funniest thing on TV (ignoring Mark Henry matches, yuck yuck)."
But see, thing is, it isn't. Malcolm In The Middle. The Office. Hell, Friends and Frasier. Even freakin' MONK makes me laugh more than The Simpsons does now. There is NOTHING good about 90% of the new episodes, to me at least. They're just dumb, broadly-aimed jokes with no real thought or intelligence to them.

"Homer! You should be more supportive!"
"You're right. Good job, boy."

"EGGHEAD LIKES HIS BOOKIE-WOOKS!"
"HOMER!"
"Just tucking him in!"
See, now THAT'S funny. But Maggie swimming out to sea to save Homer? Marge getting sugar banned? Krusty getting cancelled/demoted for like the fourth time? Frank Grimes' SON(?!?) trying to kill Homer? It's MADNESS, I tells ya.

Man, those are some pretty OLD episodes you're referencing ...

Mm... it'll probably be decent, but I can't say I'd pay eight bucks to see it considering how tired the show's gotten. I mean, how can they make a movie-quality story when they're already re-re-recycling their jokes for the regular TV show? I'd much rather see another South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut than another Beavis & Butt-head Do America.

Not really. The sugar episode was Season 13 (2002), and Grimes's sun was season 14 (late 2002). And Krusty getting cancelled/demoted is pretty much in EVERY season....

It depends WHICH five writers they're getting to do the film. If they draft Conan O'Brien and a could of the writers from Season 3-6, they're gold. BUT...if it's anybody but them...this could get UGLY. Then again, it couldn't be much worse than the usual dreck we get in theatres nowadays.

If South Park and Beavis & Butt-head get their 90 minutes on the silver screen, the Simpsons deserve that same chance. Besides, I happened to like the aforementioned examples' transitions to the movie screen, so I've got high hopes for the Simpsons.

I'm agreeing with OSH here. I haven't been able to watch the show in years. I heard about how this season has been better, and I tuned Sunday's episode (with all the historical re-enactments), and it WAS better, but still not good. In my opinion, it's definitely not the funniest show on TV right now, and that makes particularly unexcited about a movie.
