52.5 Million people tuned in to the last episode. That would place them at number 4 for most watched series finales. I find that a little disappointing, as the show was touted as one of the best comedies ever. Execs at NBC where hoping for viewership to be in the 45 million range.
The Top 3 are as follows...
M*A*S*H 106 million Cheers 80.4 million Seinfeld 76.3 million
Wonder where Frasier will end up?

Wouldn't No. 4 ALL-TIME make them one of the best comedies ever (at least by ratings standards)? Doesn't that mean there are only three shows EVER that people thought were better (and three incredible shows, at that)?

I guess I should have re-worded that...
With all the hype surrounding the show, I figured that the numbers would be in the Cheers range..

I don't think it's a coincidence that the top 3 are also in order of which show was on the air first. In an age where people have many more choices of what to watch, I doubt there will ever be a show that will match M*A*S*H's numbers. That Seinfeld did the numbers it did were simply amazing for the time, & a testament to the overall appeal & quality of the show.
The fact the NBC execs expected only 45 million for the finale speaks as to what can be expected in todays cable/satellite world. |
