Damn, and I was hoping it'd be OAKLAND to pull off the Fold to End all Folds, but they finally wrapped up the AL West tonight. I got a little hope they'd collapse after Huston Street (one of the worst closers in the game) blew a 3-run lead last night, but it wasn't to be.

I imagine Frank Thomas is having the last laugh right about now.

Find me one person who thought Frank Thomas would put together a year like this. Obviously not many folks did since the best he could get was a low-end incentive laden contract in the hopes he might be able to do something. I'm happy for him. I've always loved Frank, and was there giving him a 2 minute standing ovation when he returned to Chicago, but there was no way the White Sox could have kept him when Thome was available, and the Sox would have had to arb Thomas, which would have meant millions, not the $500,000 Oakland had to risk.

I'm as surprised as anyone that Thomas has stayed relatively healthy the entire year, but on last years numbers when healthy, this years numbers don't seem too big a stretch.
I can see why they had to let him go though, but it was no surprise someone was willing to take a shot on him.

Is this weekend considered Payback for '82 weekend for the Brewers? Sadly, these might be the 4 biggest games the franchise has played since late '92.

Pedro Martinez is done for the season, so Orlando Hernandez will be the Mets starter for game 1 of the divisionals. (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2606427)

That sets up Glavine for game 2, and probably Steve Trachsel for game 3. If you're up 2-1, I'd throw John Maine out in game 4, and that gets Hernandez to a game 5 if you would need it. Down 2-1, Hernandez would probably go, with Glavine in game 5.

It's not ideal, but it also beats Pedro trying to go and giving up 6 without getting out of the 2nd inning of game 1. The rotation is what it is at this point, go out and ride it.

The Cards just dropped another one. Their lead's down to half a game. If it stays this way, it looks like they'll be hosting the Giants on Monday to determine their fate. But that leads me to this question...

Will the Giants even want to bother? Or will they just forfeit and save themselves the plane ride?

EDIT: Oh, and for those curious. The Astros have Roger Clemens pitching on Friday. The Cardinals will have...Jeff Weaver. Advantage: Houston.

MLB won't let the Giants forfeit. Selig would go apeshit if a playoff race was decided if a team just decided not to show up.

Scene: Mark DeRosa's brain. The year is 2005.
Part of Mark DeRosa's brain: Come on, another position change? One day it's second base, the next day right field, now it's third? Why, I oughta go into Buck's office and throw his talking fish on the floor!
Other part of Mark DeRosa's brain: Hold on, other part of the brain. We're making $500,000 this year. Last year we made $725,000. All for playing a damn kids' game. This is, as they say in Brainland, a no-"us"-er. We're not going to complain.
Part of Mark DeRosa's brain: You're right, dude. Let's go back to looking at this crazy porn Teixeira gave us!

There is exactly one scenario that would make a playoff for the division worth it for Cardinals fans:

Ninth inning, two on, two out, Astros up by two, Albert Pujols at the plate, and out of the bullpen comes Brad Lidge...

And there's only one way that scenario can end this time around: with Lidge striking Pujols out and finally redeeming himself.

I won't deny that scenario scares the wits out of me. Brad Lidge has not been the same since that homer from Pujols last year, so hopefully get'll get a chance to redeem himself.

This playoff race is much too close. I'm loving every minute of it.

........aaaaaaaaaaand the Twins tie for the division lead, and with KC playing the way they are, they just might take one or two from the Tigers. What a weekend this is going to be. I lost my voice yelling during last night's game. Oy.

Eh, Pujols has owned Lidge all year so I don't see that happening. And frankly the Cards were getting to Lidge in that series before the Pujols homer so it wasn't a shock to me.

Also I don't see the Cards staying within two runs of anyone unless A)Carpenter is pitching or B)They've already scored ten runs. Looking at the pitching lineup, unless they decide to rest Carpenter in case of a play-in game, they won't have him against the Astros and that ain't good news.

Boy howdy is this not fun.

San Diego and the Dodgers clinched NL spots today, so the only spot left is St. Louis/Houston for the NL Central. If St. Louis beats Milwaukee tomorrow, or Atlanta beats Houston, the Cardinals win the division. A St. Louis loss and a Houston win means that the Giants have to go to St. Louis on Monday to make up a rainout from earlier in the season. If St. Louis loses the makeup, then there will be a playoff on Tuesday for the NL Central title.

Detroit is still playing (and losing) in Kansas City, and if that result holds, then the Tigers and Minnesota are tied with one game left each. If they remain tied, Detroit are AL Central champs and Minnesota gets the wild-card due to head-to-head records.

Same situation in the NL West. San Diego and Los Angeles are tied with one game left. If they both win, or both lose tomorrow, the Padres win the division, with LA in the wild card.

In other news, not only did Pedro Martinez tear a muscle in his calf, he also has a rotator cuff tear, and is probably out until the All Star break next year:

Well Houston just lost, so St. Louis secures the final playoff spot. Thank god.

And Albert Pujols has to be the MVP. His two *huge* homeruns this weekend saved the Cardinals' season.

Detroit lost, so they go to The Bronx, and Oakland goes to Minnesota. With SD up 7-1, it looks like St Louis at San Diego and LA at NY.

I really, really, really want to see Kenny Rodgers start a game in NY....

You're welcome for the sweep!

I am firmly planted on the Twins' bandwagon. Move over, JimBob and CRZ! They've always been one of my backup teams to root for when the Royals aren't competitive, which seems to be every year. I love Joe Mauer (in a manly way).
