Nextel Cup may replace Winston Cup
BY ED HINTON
The Orlando Sentinel

BROOKLYN, Mich. - (KRT) - Nextel Communications is close to a deal to replace Winston as NASCAR's major series sponsor, according to a variety of sources and a red-hot team grapevine in the garage area at Michigan International Speedway on Sunday.

The imminence of the agreement barely was questioned, but the nature of the sponsor was, considering the volatility of the telecommunications industry in recent years. NASCAR sources told the Orlando Sentinel that research showed Nextel to be among the healthiest of the telecoms by the measure of cash reserves.

Teams with telecom sponsors_such as Ryan Newman's Alltel and Robby Gordon's Cingular Wireless_reportedly have been asked what effect having another such company as the overall series sponsor would have on their efforts.

The agreement, if finalized, could be announced "within the next two weeks," said a NASCAR source. The package is believed to be for 10 years, for at least $30 million annually, and would take effect in 2004.

R.J. Reynolds, parent company of the Winston cigarette brand, is believed to have spent no more than $25 million in any of its 30 years as series sponsor.

RJR notified NASCAR at the beginning of this season that Winston would bow out of the remaining three years of its current contract, should a suitable replacement be found.

"Certainly one of the chief guarantees of freedom under any government, no matter how popular and respected, is the right of citizens to keep and bear arms. This is not to say that firearms should not be very carefully used and that definite safety rules of precaution should not be taught and enforced. But the right of citizens to bear arms is just one more guarantee against arbitrary government, one more safeguard against a tyranny which now appears remote in America, but which historically has proved to be always possible."
- Sen. Hubert H. Humphrey, 1960

Rednecks have mobiles now? *ducks*

$25 million over thirty years isn't a bad deal considering how well known the title is. Even someone like me who doesn't follow NASCAR at all is so familiar with it that you'd expect it never to change, just like Comiskey Park or TNN.

I think you read that wrong - didn't the piece say no more than $25 million in any one year out of the last thirty?
