| #1 Posted on 15.8.06 1510.24 | Instant Rating: 5.38 | While yesterday was a pre-season game that didn't matter, I'm curious as to whether anyone caught a glimpse of the new MNF commentary crew of Tirico, Thiesmann, and TK.
I missed out on it due to the work schedule, but I'm personally wondering how Kornheiser did on his first night in the booth.
EDIT: I was saving this question for the first week of the regular season. But upon seeing StaggerLee and Mayhem's replies, I've now got to ask. Tony Kornheiser: Better or worse than Dennis Miller?

Thiesman seemed a bit better, without Paul McGuire being his usual dick self, pissing Thiesman off.
Tirico was pretty good actually. I've always liked him, so he was pleasant to listen to last night.

He's so used to arguing topics but that didn't really fit well into what the other two were doing so a lot of the things he said were just left out there or ignored.
Though he and Joe did seem to disagree on a lot of stuff, which could be fun in the future. It wasn't great, wasn't terrible. | Packman V2

I dont expect much out of him to begin with, other than the occasional filler between Theisman and Tirico. I think if MNF continues it's luck of drawing duds, then he'll really have the spotlight to shine.

I cant' believe people were saying today that TK talked over Joe T too much. what a hoot.
Seemed to this prejudiced ear that it was the other way round.
To me, the biggest story is the Post running the most negative review of MNF I've seen.

Joe doesn't need anyone to help him in his myopic bitterness. Nor is it anyone else's fault that he's a not-good announcer.
At least there's the solace in knowing that Kornheiser can't get any worse at this. His main problems are that he had too firm a grasp on the obvious and he didn't seem like he was used to the format. Plus it took him a while to get into a broadcaster's comfort zone with Wilbon. Unfortunately, he doesn't have that kind of time in this case.

That said, I fully expect them to improve. The HBO Boxing After Dark crew of Fran Charles, Max Kellerman, and Lennox Lewis was DREADFUL for the first couple of episodes, and if those guys can improve and be OK to listen to, these guys surely can.

| #11 Posted on 15.8.06 2351.21 | Instant Rating: 6.98 | The thing that I hated about them was that everything seemed too forced. I realize it's a preseason game, but they were just harping on some stupid things.
No, Andrew Walter is NOT ready to superceede Aaron Brooks based on his carving up of the Vikings second team defensive backs (who suck, by the way). Especially not after watching Mike Tomlin change up the coverage scheme on him and having Walter throw two picks. And no, Tavaris Jackson is NOT going to overtake Mike McMahon as the primary backup based soley on his performance outrunning a couple of NFL Europe bound linebackers.
I think my biggest issue with Kornheiser is that he wanted to talk too much. He wanted to debate and force issues, and when Tirico and Theisman ignored him to go back to calling the game, he kept trying to engage them in whatever little debate he'd staked out as important in his mind. Hell, they time him on PTI, he should be used to being under a time constraint by now. Say your piece and get back to calling the game, nobody *really* wants to hear you and Theisman arguing about how many preseason games there are. If he learns to tone that down, and be more quippy about his thoughts between plays, I think he'll be fine. Otherwise he's wasted off PTI.

| #13 Posted on 16.8.06 0243.47 | Instant Rating: 4.99 | One positive about Tony: it was nice to hear an announcer actually be critical about ANYTHING for a change. I'm tired of the ex-jock announcers making excuses for the players or giving them verbal blowjobs (i.e. "Brett Favre throws interceptions because he's trying to make things happen out there! What a warrior!")
Scene: Mark DeRosa's brain. The year is 2005. Part of Mark DeRosa's brain: Come on, another position change? One day it's second base, the next day right field, now it's third? Why, I oughta go into Buck's office and throw his talking fish on the floor! Other part of Mark DeRosa's brain: Hold on, other part of the brain. We're making $500,000 this year. Last year we made $725,000. All for playing a damn kids' game. This is, as they say in Brainland, a no-"us"-er. We're not going to complain. Part of Mark DeRosa's brain: You're right, dude. No, you're right. It's more like Andrew Walter is ready to supercede Aaron Brooks based his being Aaron Brooks.

Tony seemed quite humbled on PTI yesterday, even taking a few good-natured ribs at Theisman. Wilbon gave him a fair critique before the Big Finish and even gave TK some great advice about his body language on Monday night being very off-putting to viewers.
I don't mean to brush aside any "feud" between TK and Golic, but Tony came across somewhat mild-mannered yesterday (well, as mild-mannered as he gets, anyway).

| #17 Posted on 17.8.06 1002.09 | Instant Rating: 3.16 | I only saw the game for a few minutes and I could only stand the game for a few minutes. Tony Kornheiser was the worst football broadcaster I've ever heard. From what little I saw he seemed he was stuck in "ESPN Talking Head" mode and not game analysis mode. Maybe that's his official role and I'm just clueless but I thought it sucked.
Here's what I heard TK add to the discussion when Viking's QB J.T. O'Sullivan was on the screen: "Is it J.T. O'Sullivan or J.T.O. Sullivan?" I'd rather listen to Dennis Miller.
'But if one is struck by me only a little, that is far different, the stroke is a sharp thing and suddenly lays him lifeless, and that man's wife goes with cheeks torn in lamentation, and his children are fatherless, while he, staining the soil with his red blood, rots away, and there are more birds than women swarming about him.'
