I would've started this thread on Thursday, but the rain and the seeming inevitability of another Woods win dampened my spirits.

Now, I dunno what the hell is going to happen. Woods had a great round today and got himself back in the hunt. He could easily put up a 65 or a 66 and win this thing. That wacky bastard Phil Mickelson is in the hunt again, trying to get that major. Vijay Singh, David Toms, Jose Olazabal....they're all there, but the man in front is Jeff Maggert. If he wins, my God will that be an upset. The man has not won since 1995, I believe.

Of course, my boy Mike Weir had this thing in the DAMN BAG with a six-shot lead at one point, before blowing his brains out. He's still in second, two back of Maggert, but man alive! Six shots! If Woods had that lead, we wouldn't even be having this conversation right now.

My pick....Vijay Singh BARELY holds off Tiger.

And everywhere, Canadians said "That Mike is pretty good, eh"?

From what I see in the highlights, an incredible final round. Insane.

Oh man, that was awesome.

I can't believe that good ol' Mike (who once played a round with my hacker dad 11 years ago) is actually the Masters champ. What a moment.

Gotta feel bad for Lenny Mattiace, but he has nothing to be ashamed of. Helluva final round.

I'm still in awe after seeing that 1000 ft putt Mattiace knocked in. Crazy how it was almost identicle to Crenshaw's putt from way back.

I was hoping something was going to happen at the green jacket ceremony. We could have at least gotten a Martha Burke run-in, with her crackin Hootey over the head with one of those lame trophies. Hootey vs. Marth has celebrity death match written all over it.

Will Martha please go away already? I realize that the .000005% of the female population who could afford an Augusta membership (I'm assuming that the cost is extremely high) and would want to play golf are victims [sarcasm intended], but it's time to move on. As someone who enjoys golf, the only thing that I can see that comes with an Augusta membership is prestige. The course is closed during the summer to protect the greens. I would like to play one round there during my lifetime (although I never will have the opportunity), but a membership?

Congratulations to Wier and condolonces to Tiger. Like him or not, you have to admit that he is one heavily hyped athlete who actually is as good as advertised. There is nobody who works harder on their game than Tiger.

Has any young athlete ever met/exceeded expectations to the level that Tiger has?

Oh yeah, cry me a river for Tiger. I'm sure he had it tough sleeping on his pile of money with his Swedish model girlfriend. He had three green jackets already...Mike Weir can have one.

Tiger definitely passes the "tell your grandkids about him" test. He's probably the greatest individual athlete of my lifetime. As for young athletes that manage to live up to the hype...Wayne Gretzky? To much lesser extents, Kobe Bryant and Alex Rodriguez?

I wasn't aware that Gretzky was hyped, hockey doesn't receive much time now in my area, and had it not been for Sport magazine and Sports Illustrated, I wouldn't have known about Gretzky before we received cable (1983 IIRC, we did live in the sticks).

Yeah, Gretzky as a kid scored something like 400 points a year in minor hockey. Pretty impressive.

Of course, money is super important to get in, but not every rich guy can get in; Richard Nixon was turned down when he applied.

You have to be invited. Hootie Johnson, for example, was invited by Bobby Jones.

Tickets for the event ain't exactly easy to obtain, either. People consider themselves pretty lucky to get tickets to the practice sessions.

I was watching Mike and Maddog on YES network, Mike is cool, but I could do a better job on the mic than Maddog, actually I do. I have to say by the tape they showed, Weir had one of the best comebacks in golf history. Of course, Maddog thought Mattiace was an idoit for doing what he did on the 18th hole. This is a New York station so they have to lay blame on the loser, because it means the winner actually overcame odds. Stupid New Yorkers.

From what Mike said there was only 20 people protesting and 12 were Martha's employees. So, I don't know where this huge controversy arouse. I hate to say it, but it is a private club, private does mean private. We are not talking about public schools here. The pratice maybe old hat, but thats how it is and thats how it should be. If I had a private club and someone forced there way into it then why should I have a club in the first place if its not people I don't think that will contribute to the club.

Onto Tiger, is it true that he benches like 350? I remeber hearing that he is an insane all around athlete once. Also, I do believe that a woman whose husband is a member of Augusta can play there too. The whole boycott is stupid, a private club means PRIVATE CLUB, which means they can do what they want. Just because its rich old white guys doesn't mean they have to let in anyone they want....

Mike Francesa is an opinionated pompous blowhard who used to be objective many years ago before he fell in love with himself and his self-importance. Mad Dog is an overzealous screaming lunatic who will at least admit that he is wrong every once in a while.

I'm on Hootie's side here but Augusta will eventually change. Martha Burke may not have all that many supporters (the media covering her outnumbered them) but she does have time on her side. There are private clubs out there for women only too. They just don't play the Masters at those clubs so nobody cares.

This is true. The wives of members virtually become members themselves, and are allowed nearly full playing privileges.

If Hootie was smart, he could've avoided a few headaches last summer by simply making the current members' wives full members. That way, there's no one woman that gets singled out as "the first."

That would defeat the point, though. Hootie doesn't want to make any woman a full member.

The issue is a matter of principal, i.e. that women have the right to join Augusta. But Augusta, as a private club, has every right to keep saying, "No."

I have to question Martha Burke's intentions here. Women have every right to start a club with membership exclusive to women. Women have every right to create for themselves an equivalent "Old Girls Club." Why is it so important that they be allowed to join Augusta?

The only realistic and defensible answer, I think, is because they'd like a "piece of the tradition." It is my position that getting a piece of someone else's tradition is worse than having no tradition at all.

Equality is specifically about not having to ride the coattails of another; it's about everyone's right to make it on his or her own. That does not, however, guarantee every person the right to make it wherever he or she chooses; there are limits in life. Some people have more trouble than others with this.
