The Los Angeles/California/Anaheim Angels have changed their name again.

Well, that's just idiotic. The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim? What's next? The University of Southern California College?

This will still get shortened to The LA Angels, methinks.

The article stated that dropping "Anaheim" would be a violation of the lease, so THIS is their workaround solution?! Somewhere Al Davis is running "The Los Angeles Raiders of Oakland" around in his head.

I know that a lot of us here took a great deal of pride in the fact that the Angels were the Orange County team, and NOT another LA team.

I honestly believe this move may have single handedly pissed of the entire fan base that they have built up since the world series win. NO ONE I know of likes this out here, and everyone is of the "screw the Angels" mindset.

Even if the name change ends up sticking, it is going to backfire big time. LA fans aren't going to trade the Dodgers for the Angels, and Orange County Angels fans are not going to take any pride in another LA team...

Well, if they didn't change their name to Anaheim in the first place, they wouldn't have gotten the stadium renovation they wanted. And would have probably have left as a result.

Oh man, this looks like something straight out of The Onion. Maybe it'll catch on eventually. People used to regularly say the New York Football Giants (because of the baseball Giants, right?), and that doesn't sound so bad, maybe this will be the same.

What about "Los Angeles Anaheim?" It's been awhile since high school Spanish, but wouldn't that translate into "The Anaheim Angels?"

If Arte Moreno was smart, he could've tapped into two pop culture veins at once and renamed his team the O.C. Angels.

What do you mean used to? Here in New England, we still call the the team the New York Football Giants. It just rolls of the tongue.

Funny quote from Dave Hodge on TSN this past weekend....."You've got the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and their regional rivals the Brooklyn Dodgers of Los Angeles."

if you think this is a stupid idea, you must not care what is best for the team. it is about money, if you have been going to angels games since moreno took over the beer prices are low and the ticket prices are low. he has invested in big time free agents and gotten the team to the playoffs again which is no small feat in baseball. all this is good. who cares if he changes the name so that he can negotiate a better television/radio deal. frankly, i am an angels fan that lives in los angeles. i have been since the california angel days, at least now i can smile everyday when i drive home and see "city of angels" billboards near my home.

The end-all, be-all isn't always about money. It's about the consumer who, in the end, provides the money. This name change hasn't won any new fans in Los Angeles (most of whom are die-hard Dodgers fans or others who are already Angels fans who can't change their minds anyway) and it's actually alienated fans in Orange County who feel betrayed.

The Angels don't need a better television or radio deal. They're already broadcast throughout Los Angeles and Orange County on KCAL 9 and on radio through our ESPN Radio affiliates. Fox and ESPN will broadcast their games because they're a good, competitive team, not because of where they're from. The name change was ultimately unnecessary and will hurt the team and its Orange County fan base in the long run.

sorry dude, you are mistaken. they will get paid more money for each game on tv now that they are from "los angeles". thats just how the business works. it might not make a difference to viewers like us who see the games on tv regardless but when they negotiate a new deal soon they will ask for more money and get it.

You take the abstract far too literally.

It's true that marketing themselves as "Los Angeles" may help the team reach more fans around SoCal, resulting in more tix sold, higher ratings, etc, but it is hardly a guarantee that it will lead to more revenue.

You know what does lead to money? Division titles and free agent signings like Vlad Guerrero and Orlando Cabrera. As a Cardinals fan, I'd pay money to see the team if they called themselves the Kirkwood Fannybusters, granted that PUJOLS~! is still patroling first base and the NL Central title is a possibility. No one who has bled Dodger Blue will now say, "hey, those Angels are my team now that they're Los Angeles of Anaheim!" They might check out a game if Tracy's boys are watching Fox while Scioscia's are in the ALCS.

The name change is cute, but pointless.

"Owner George Steinbrenner can afford the payroll of over $240 million a year, largely due to his local television contracts which bring in a reported profit of over $200 million a season.

A television contract that large must certainly have large national advertisers, not just the local Home Depot and Wienerschnitzel, which sponsored the Angels this year. "

sorry i didnt have time to find more and sooner, but having a major media location like los angeles in your name will appeal to bigger advertisers. i thought the money came from the actual deal itself but i guess that deal is generated based on the advertising interest. so it is true that its not a direct correlation, but its also common sense that they will get better advertisers and more money. its not the fans they are trying to appeal to, its the advertisers.

The Yankees get such big deals because they are the YANKEES, not because they are the "New York" Yankees. That is a team with a tradition of being a good team, and wins more often than it looses. It also has a more "national" fan base, whereas the Angels just don't.

Nobody outside LA cares if the Angels become "from LA," and people in LA don't care because they have the Dodgers.

If he wants to get a better TV deal, he needs to build a better team - a team with staying power. One World Series win is not going to do it - no matter what city the team is "from."
