I'm just writing here because I need to vent my frustrations over what has happened to the Knicks organization. I think it really should be blamed on the upper level management(Owners, executives), because their incompentence has filtered down through the rest of the organization. You can't run a sports team with your bottom line being making money and drawing seats. It's not a broadway show. You have to run a sports team with your bottom line being win at all costs. If you have a winning tem, fans will come. You don't just go out and buy marqueee players and hope fans come to see the players, you put together a winning team and fans will come to see the team. And those players will become marquee. The only solution right now to the Knicks woes is to go the Wizards route and dump the big 3(Houston Spree and Camby) and start over. I'm even for keeping Spreewell. Give Houston to a team either like the bulls who need marquee stars or to Utah for one of the aging players on their roster and marginal players, they will retire much sooner than Houston, and then you can buy out the remainder of those contarcts as opposed to a buy out of a 100 million dollar contract. I know Houston must have some say in where he goes but try to place him, make an offer the other team can't refuse.. just dump him. Also Camby has proven he will never be a reliable player, so dump him too. A team like Atlanta can use a big man and might be willing to trade for some marginal players as well. A starting 5 of
Jackson
Spreewell
Weatherspoon or Anderson
Thomas
and
Knight
Will be at least as competitive as the lineup they are using now, plus the Knicks might be able to pick up a starter quality player in the trade.
Then it's just a matter of drafting a good player, and rebuilding from there.
Any thoughts?
As a long time Knicks fan I understand what you're saying completely. I think the major problem this franchise has is the fact that WE CAN'T DRAFT!!! The last meaningful player to come in via the draft and get any meaningful minutes is Greg Anthony! A decade of wasted #1 picks. That's the problem with the team right now. If we had drafted smartly then the post Ewing era wouldn't be in this bad a shape.
I am all for tanking the season a la San Antonio and getting the #1 pick - Jason Williams. I also think we package Sprewell and Camby out of here to clear cap space, accumulate draft picks and maybe pick up a good player in return. No one is taking Houston with that contract, but I do think with a great playmaker he can flourish.
I think Knicks fans everywhere wouldn't have a problem with our current standings if the 90s had brought us at least one championship. We should have won it all in 92-93. Not only do I blame Charles Smith for not dunking but I HATE the refs for not calling a foul on Jordan/Pippen/Grant beating the shit out of him under the basket. The next year we would have won it in Game 6 if Hakeem didn't block Starks' last second shot. Wow, if he hits that his career goes a completely different direction! The 99 season was a bonus plain and simple. It was a fun ride and as long as we beat Miami that year I was estatic.
