Yeah, I know, Doc. That doesn't stop the food stamp folks from buying argentinian beef.

But I am more in favor of competitiveness. again, an anecdotal story. My daughter's former boyfriend's Dad is a farmer. I have no idea how many acres, but enough. He farms (as almost everyone in Indiana does) Soybeans and Corn. I know he has always had another job (He works in a cement factory). His equipment is old. I know none of their children plan on taking over the farm. They probably will lose it in estate taxes anyway. I wonder what will happen there? The Dad is like mid 50s, I guess. A couple years older than me. He looks 15 years older though.

tough stuff. We make the most food in the world, but it's also priced high, because it is so rigorously tested and regulated. Makes it tough for the single farmers. I wonder what would happen if most of the ag subsidies went away. I just saw where our Gov spent 1.8 million to study Pig Manure. That doesn't seem important to you and me, but I am sure it is keeping a state school academic and his team employed for a bit. I wonder how it ends up benefiting the farmers?

We'll be back right after order has been restored here in the Omni Center.

Actually there are several reasons off the top of my head to study pig manure that are important. Remember, I am one of those academics but in the research and extension service, not in an ivy hall.

AWA, the thing I would challenge is that our food isn't priced highly, in fact we spend relatively little as a percentage of income on food. By food, I mean food, not all the prepared, processed in a box stuff as that is not only more expensive but also not a lot of nutrition a lot of the time. We are by no means poor and are pretty busy but we make most of our food at home for several reasons.

Anyway, while food prices are higher, they are still pretty damn cheap, especially staples. And I am talking US produced food stuffs. But even the import stuff, especially fruits and vegetables isn't bad. You are my age almost and I am sure you remember how seasonal fresh produce was.

I didn't say 'food for the poor' I said food for everybody. I mean, it's one of the few things we all know that every human needs, so why not just expect the government to give everybody food too.

They're called food subsidies, and as this helpful graphic points out, it's why fast food cost less than healthy food.

Hooo boy I can barely fathom the level of disgust and anger that would be heaped by the right-wing upon a Democrat who ran with Arnie's past. Bill O'Reilly would actually spontaneously combust live on tv in disgust.
