Originally it was someone else directing a Hobbit movie. Then someone directing 2 Hobbit movies. Then Peter Jackson directing 2 Hobbit movies.

Finally it is Peter Jackson directing a trilogy set in Middle-Earth. Again.

This makes me very happy.

http://www.facebook.com/notes/the-hobbit/peter-jacksons-long-awaited-filmed-adaptation-of-the-hobbit-to-be-a-trilogy/413954741973470

The first film in the trilogy, “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” will be released December 14, 2012, with the second film releasing on December 13, 2013, and the third film slated for summer 2014. All three films will be released in 3D and 2D in select theatres and IMAX.

No doubt this is a Hollywood ploy to squeeze as much money as possible from this franchise

No doubt that Peter Jackson is viewing this as a way to put this story on film in the way that captures the true essence of The Hobbit.

No doubt that I am excited about seeing these films as imagined by Peter Jackson in this way.

So many books destroyed by Hollywood in the past because of film capacity/time/money. Really stoked that they are giving this story the time to (assumption) to develop the characters and connect with the audience.

Very excited

I sure hope there's a lot more than "The Hobbit" that's going to be in these movies, because this book doesn't have the depth, the structure for three individual movies, nor the material to be spread out like this.

Lord of the Rings made sense because the books are massive and they were written as three individual books that could translate to three individual movies.

This? Sounds like someone can't edit.

Jackson sucks at editing. I still think there's a good movie in King Kong if it didn't take an hour on the ship and that 15 minute dino stampede sequence.

It sounds like they're planning to pretty much do the world of Middle Earth from Bilbo's adventure up to where LOTR starts by using information from not just The Hobbit but LOTR and its appendices.

He can film it in the 1/100th speed he did for Return of the King where it felt like forever with Sam and Frodo on Mountain Doom. One of the worst Oscar movies of all time.

It was actually one book that was chopped up into three books because it would be easier to publish and sell that way. It was supposed to be volume one of a two volume set with The Silmarillion being volume two.

Uproxx reports several potential titles for the third film have been registered. (I tinyurl'd the link because it had one of the names in the URL).
http://tinyurl.com/cf6fmxb

Spoiler Below: Highlight text to read
They've registered "The Desolation of Smaug", "Riddles in the Dark", and "The Battle of Five Armies" as trademarks. Any (or none!) of them could become a new title.

Jackson: "Ok, I've finally finished the movie - it's all done."
Studios: "Great - you know, could you put a bunch of filler in it? Box office numbers are down and we need to, you know, pick up the slack."
Jackson: You want me to Matrix my movie?
Studios: *hands a large bag of cash*
Jackson: Let's do this! I like money.

Honestly, there's no real need for it to be broken up into three movies. :\

They are owned by Tolkien's son and he is very protective of them. Just getting the opening battle in Fellowship apparently took some doing since it was in Silmarillion.

Out of the three its the weakest. The extended edition makes it somewhat watchable. If Fellowship had won, fine even Two Towers. It was given, because of the other two being screwed over and large bank it made. They would have done the same to Jedi too if not for the Ewoks. Even though not finishing Saurman and Wormtongue in the theaters was a worse crime than the Ewoks, but whatever.

I agree that the LotR movies got progressively worse. Maybe it was just me getting bored with the story as it dragged on and on, but I cared less and less about Frodo and Sam the more I saw them. The other characters were fine, but two lone and mostly defenseless hobbits are not very intriguing to me.

Anyway, I know absolutely nothing about the story of the Hobbit, so I'll be mildly excited to see these movies when they eventually come out. I'm not a big fan of Tolkien in general, but Peter Jackson turned books that I mostly disliked into movies I mostly liked, so I'll give him another go around.

Not being a fan helps explain your statement in the first paragraph. I enjoyed the books but wasn't slavish to them so I thought all three movies were well done and entertaining. I'm not so sure you'll like The Hobbit if you didn't care for the LoTR.

As a fan of Doug Benson's podcast, "Doug Loves Movies", I know he'd suggest the title The Hobbit: Ghost Protocol.

Ladies and gentlemen, the following public service message is brought to you by your friends from D-Generation X, who would like to remind each and every one of you that if you're not down with that, we've got two words for you...

Honestly, I don't know what's so hard about the titles for the trilogy and the layout of the material:

Part 1: An Unexpected Journey (start of novel > Companions escape from Goblins in the Misty Mountains, Bilbo meets Gollum)
Part 2: The Quest for Erebor (riddle game, Bilbo escapes Gollum, reunites with Companions > Bilbo meets Smaug)
Part 3: There and Back Again (death of Smaug, desolation of Esgaroth > Battle of Five Armies > Bilbo returns home > epilogue covering events between the Hobbit up until Fellowship of the Ring)

Simple, really.

While the switch from Cena to RVD should alleviate some complaints, the inevitability of the belt's return to Cena (note where Summerslam is this year) and the poor initial showing by the new ECW are enough to keep the indicator where it is for now. The pieces are in place, though, especially on RAW, for improvements to be made to the IWC's psyche in the near future.

My opinion of this show really hinges on what the side characters do at this point, and they really delivered for the most part. All I really hope for these days is for them to crank out 2-4 great episodes a season.
