USA 2. Mexico 0. John O'Brien invokes the ghost of Diego Maradona as he uses the Hand Of God to knock a corner kick out of the box and the ref misses it completely. And we are in the Quarterfinals of the World Cup!

As an aside Brad Friedel is quickly advancing into cult hero status, and if the US can somehow move past Germany he might just have a chance at getting into that Olympic champion realm. He's one more "Human Wall" performance from a Wheaties box I say!

Anyone remember the joy of seeing him bash the Undertaker's motorcycle with his sledgemhammer and doing no damage and being all like, "Mjolnir will not break thine cycle? I say thee NAY!" and dumping it off the stage. - Enojado Viento says the funniest thing I've ever read on Wienerville.

This is truly the best thing ever! I have never seen a World Cup with so many upsets as this one. Unbelivable. So the official betting mans (from the UK's William Hill bookies) list of the top 10 most likely teams to make it into the final is now reduced to Brazil, England and Spain. It really is wide open isn't it? Brilliant.

They were, my bad. I was pretty excited when I typed that and forgot them. I seem to be getting insanely into it now. Just a damn shame I'll be working during the England v tbc QF match on Friday morning .

Edit: Actually Italy are the favourites right now. A comparison of the various (UK) online bookmakers odds can be seen if you Click Here

Italy are the favourites? Haven't those bookmakers watched Italy play this World Cup? They may get past Korea, but Spain should stop them in the next round.

I'm thinking Germany are going to "sneak" through to win this whole thing. Oliver Kahn is just unbeatable as a goalkeeper-1 goal in 4 matches, I think. Although best of luck to the USA, I certainly didn't expect them to get past Mexico-great story. Poor Jim Rome must be really pissed off now, as his goal has been to rid the USA of soccer.

Somehow I think we'd be much better off if we just rid the USA of Jim Rome instead. I've had bouts of diarrhea that were more entertaining than listening to that pompous blowhard spout off his garbage.

I agree 100%. Rome is a twit, to put it lightly.

Anyway, hahahahahahahahaha. I STILL think that we threw the last game so that we would play Mexico. This win should come as no surprise since we play Mexico so many times. If there is one elite soccer team that we know well it is Mexico. That knowledge is a big advantage if they take you lightly.

U-S-A! U-S-A!

Hey, Goldberg's still not booked for anything...think we could get him to cut a "You're next!" promo on Germany?

Got up at 4am and caught the 75th minute on - never expected to beat Mexico the way we have been playing - can't wait for the game against Germany.

Italy is going to have one hell of an obstacle to hurdle with the South Korean fans and the "track team" that the Koreans are - they just don't stop running.

I would love to see a USA-Italy semi-final matchup - the Wife is 100% Italian and it would be war in our house.....but it is more likely to be Germany-Spain on this side of the bracket

Two good things about this match:
Excellent USA goals.
AWESOME USA defense.

The rest of the match? Absolute clusterfrick. I was about ready to come through the TV and strangle the ref. On a side note, he was Portugeuse. Hmmmmm... ;)

Here's wishing the US a smashing victory over the Krauts- as long as you can afford to sacrifice one of your players in exchange for crippling Miroslav Klose, America shouldn't have any worries in the QFs...

Dear Bruce Arena,

Please, do us all a favor and assign Tony Sanneh to defend against Miroslav Klose.

Thank you.

Klose is one problem; the other is Kahn, who's only let in one goal in four games. He has such a good presence of mind in that net.

The Mexican coach is complaining about the handball in the goal area. I can't stand coaches looking for excuses after the final whistle. One missed call doesn't make a ninety minute match. Aguirre: Your team played like crap. You're out. Get over it.

I finally saw the game last night and all I took away with me was one thought: how vicious was that killer headbutt?! A well deserved red card.

I doubt it. What would Goldberg possibly have against the Germa...oh.

Big Bad: I didn't mean it like THAT. Just that, y'know, he's an American, he looks big and bad, and he's actually been near a microphone in his lifetime (unlike, say, some dude who'll remain nameless, but his last name ends in _esnar.)

And you should really add Dick Jauron in Detroit - he's at best a candidate to get a contract for that job at this point. Of course, that one playoff win makes him the Vince Lombardi of Saints' coaching history - heh.
