Ok. I imagine I hold a minority opinion here, but I thought the Steiner/Nowinski debate was fun as hell. They kept it short, they both expressed opinions well, and then it broke into anarchy. I wish I'd taped it to show to my friend in Iraq right now to see when he came back. I think he'd laugh his ass off.

It reminded me of the great Bobby Heenan / Ken Patera debate.

Heenan: All the time, you said you were pressing weights, pressing weights. Now you're only good for pressing license plates!

Now if only Steiner would wear a neck brace for the next nine months....

What I found entertaining was that Steiner managed to only stumble over himself once and didn't use a single one of his catchphrases. Might be a new record. :-)

I didn't really like it. It would have been much better if they would have actually debated, as opposed to only stating their points of view.

One good thing though, Steiner did manage to get out his lines pretty darn well, and they weren't even simple 3-letter words. Kudos to him for that, I am impressed.

Wait a second, I think I already saw this...Chris watched C-SPAN2 all day with the anti war protesters and Steiner well, lets just say I give him credit. Basic pro USA speach with very little rambling. Direct and to the point. We all have opinions like he said.

Words I didn't think Steiner knew:

harbor
terrorist
nine-eleven

I thought this was a funny concept, but it didn't work out. And, as my friend said, it IS tasteless to use 9/11 to try and get Scott Steiner over.

But I've figured out their writing problem. You've got a crew of twenty-somethings that are wanna-be Daily Show writers. Only they're not as funny, or insightful. But they're trying to be, and they're trying to do it on a MOTHERFUCKING WRESTLING SHOW.

I thought the debate was a waste of time. And, how many times did Steiner say terrorist or terrorism during his promo?

The only way that debate would have been worth the time spent is if the new French guys had attacked Steiner instead of 3 Minute Warning. Then, at least they could be building something.

I love how everything Steiner said was either wrong and/or had absolutely NOTHING that had anything to do with Nowinski's point of view (terrorists starting it, anti-war means anti-USA, anti-war means anti-troops) and the crowd ATE IT UP! I mean, the guy was faced with basic, intellegent points, and did the equivalent of name-dropping to make sure he'd get people on his side!

Man, I wish I taped it to show to my friends as a perfect 3 minute (no pun intended) long example of how easy the US government found it to pull a Houdinni-act with people's thoughts. This was perfect art imitating life!

Actually, I enjoyed The Great Debate. My favorite part was when they showed the faces of Lincoln, Nixon, Kennedy, then followed it up by showing that THESE two nuts are gonna be debating.

Steiner shocked me, actually bringing up arguable points about terrorism, and 9/11 and whatnot, when I thought he was just gonna spout off about freaks and peaks and kickin' ass; the usual Steiner nonsense. Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised.

However, when Steiner said that the French can go to hell, who was expecting "Les Nouvelles Mondiales" to come out and ambush Steiner? Instead, we get 3-Minute Warning. Oh, well, there's always next time...

I would've liked a debate just to show how crazy stupid Steiner is. Something along the lines of...

[Nowinksi makes good speech]

Steiner [putting on reading glasses and clearing throat]: YOU SUCK.

[Another good Nowinski speech]

Steiner [inserting plastic front teeth and using bad Chinese accent]: (any random Steiner catchphrase because I'm out of ideas and need to go to bed)

I could have done without that segment. I mean, I didn't even like it when Wieners were bringing politics into the wrestling folder, I certainly wasn't going to like it showing up on the wrestling show.

Although, I do agree with The Great Thomas about showing the faces of the historical figures, then showing Nowinski and Steiner, being really funny.

By the way, while Steiner did do a lot better and sounded a lot more intelligent than expected, he did use the "master debator" joke.

How was that insulting?

Steiner didn't do a damn thing except spout the same nonsense we've heard a kajillion times. Even Bush eventually admitted that Iraq didn't seem to have a damn thing to do with September 11th.

He didn't have to "eventually" admit it, he never claimed Iraq had anything to do with 9/11. I found the whole thing kind of entertaining, but I hate how Vince always tries to capitalize on these things. No matter which side is presented as "heel" or "face", a segment of the audience is going to be turned off.

He just called all Americans easily manipulated idiots. If you don't find that insulting, then I guess it's not to you.

The whole thing was kind of frustrating because I could've driven holes through Steiner's arguement and wished they'd have given Nowinski a chance to do the same (even though that wouldn't have really accomplished their goal).

I'm just impressed that they allowed Nowinski to make intelligent, rational points as opposed to the "Saddam is great" anti-war parody I was expecting.

Still, please - I can deal with these French guys, but let's keep the war debate to the *other* 22 hours of the day.

"It's just like the story of the grasshopper and the octopus. All year long, the grasshopper kept burying acorns for the winter, while the octopus mooched off his girlfriend and watched TV. But then the winter came, and the grasshopper died, and the octopus ate all his acorns. And also he got a racecar. Is any of this getting through to you?"

Well, at least Nowinski will probably get mad cheers the next time WWE is in Canada. And maybe this time, Steiner will actually "get booed for having the American flag on his tights."

5th Horseman: Okay, first of all: If I replied to something you said before and it came out as an insult, then I'm sorry. I don't remember it, but I probably posted and moved on, without doing it out of rage and thinking it was my duty because I thought you were an asshole of something (which I'm not saying you are doing either). I don't have any hard feelings about anything I've said or read, and I hope you're the same.

I never said all Americans were anything. I said that the US has played with people. Not all people, just people. I also said nothing about them being idiots. Were a lot of people easily manipulated? Yes. People on both sides were. Nothing about this war is black and white, despite what everyone's been told ("Choose a side! Pro or Anti!"). I'm willing to bet very few people in the US or anywhere else know more than what the station/people they'd decided to listen to has told them about the war, but if you're going to damn me, please don't put words like that into my mouth (trust me, I leave myself wide-open enough for people to burn me with my own quotes) They're quite a bit stronger and angrier than the ones I tried to use. Other than that, I'm going to keep my views on the war to myself (Go war, boo Bush, go troops! ) because while this is about Steiner's speech, I know that this whole thread is walking a thin line between being about wrestling and being about patriotism.

Lastly, OlFuzzyBastard's post (which just came up) sums up a good deal of what I was thinking, only I was frustrated that even though Nowinski was the heel and wasn't going to get behind him no matter what, the crowd didn't care at all about facts or arguments.
