I saw this last night, based on the life of Ip Man, the martial artist who lived through World War 2 and went on to teach Bruce Lee. Part of it was stylized action, part more subtle "art house" style storytelling. Somewhat reminiscent of "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon" but in a more modern setting, I found it thoroughly captivating. I definitely recommended seeing this film.

I saw one called "Ip Man" that sounds like what you describe and came out a few years ago.

Could this be the same film with a different title?

Kinda hard to get into it down here, for the network showing it (The N, AKA Noggin) takes some liberties with the scheduling (they've been on winter break since December). However, it's a DAMN good series.
