I saw this last night, based on the life of Ip Man, the martial artist who lived through World War 2 and went on to teach Bruce Lee. Part of it was stylized action, part more subtle "art house" style storytelling. Somewhat reminiscent of "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon" but in a more modern setting, I found it thoroughly captivating. I definitely recommended seeing this film.

I saw one called "Ip Man" that sounds like what you describe and came out a few years ago.

Could this be the same film with a different title?

Worked on quite a few highly acclaimed TV series, including Homicide: Life on the Street, The Wire, NYPD Blue, ER, etc. TV writer David Mills dies in New Orleans (washingtonpost.com) Apparently, it was a brain aneurysm.
