If you can find a uk proxy to go through, the BBC are doing live commentary on everything, and they're broadcasting the matches over the internet, too.

Par for the course it seems in this Cup. The Swiss definitely should not have been given that second goal...not that it would matter, since Korea still failed to score, but the Argentine referee just overruling the linesman so arbitrarily (especially since it was one of the more obvious offsides calls I've seen the past several days) had me shaking my fist in a futile gesture at the television screen.

It was absolutely not offside. When the ball was passed Frei was onside and then the ball was deflected off a Korean player, at which time Frei was in an offside position, but that does not matter as the ball came from the Korean.

I've even seen news articles on the game saying that, but a ball deflected off a defender to an attacker in an offside position is still offsides according to the 2006 Game Rules.

Laws of the Game 2006 (PDF document; see Page 33, Image 12)

I'm pretty sure that's the exact scenario that occurred. From what I saw (though the camera angles may have been playing tricks on me), it looked to me like he was offsides as the ball was deflected off the Korean defender.

In a sense, however, this argument IS essentially null and void in that while I see why there was frustration, playing to the whistle should always have priority over flags.

I don't think so. The important part of Image 12 is the fact that player B was in an offside position when A took the shot. In this case Frei was onside when the Swiss player did the pass and he had moved to an offside position when the ball deflected to him from the Korean. The situation is similar to Image 11 on the same page.

FIFA gives two refs 'red cards' for officiating gaffes
    ...
Premier League referee Graham Poll, who issued three yellow cards to one player in a match, and Valentin Ivanov, who handed out a record number of cautions and ejections in the Portugal-Netherlands second-round match, were omitted from officials selected for the quarterfinals, semifinals and final.
    ...

The article didn't mention if the ref from the USA-Italy match was one of the two expelled from the Cup. I can only hope.

No, his name is Jorge Larrionda, and he's still around (unfortunately).

Two things.

Spot on decision by Elizondo to wave down the assistant's flag on the second Swiss goal. It was one of the rare instances where the head referee had a better angle, and he could see that the touch that the linesman thought made the play offside was in fact made by a defender (while the initial pass was made while the recipient was in an onside position).

Secondly, Ivanov really, really didn't deserve to go home. Portugal and the Netherlands do, and luckily one of them was guaranteed such an exit through the match in question.

Or, maybe not.

Hell of a performance today by the Portuguese goalkeeper, though.

While the switch from Cena to RVD should alleviate some complaints, the inevitability of the belt's return to Cena (note where Summerslam is this year) and the poor initial showing by the new ECW are enough to keep the indicator where it is for now. The pieces are in place, though, especially on RAW, for improvements to be made to the IWC's psyche in the near future.

I really hope whoever plays Portugal in the semis (and it looks like France at the minute) absolutely batters them. They are the most snide, cheaty, despicable side in world football.

Hell, I'm rooting for Portugal just because I'm so sick of seeing the same countries always win the damn Cup.

I'm rooting for Germany in blowout form, only because one of my best friends is half-Italian, half-Greek, and having Italy lose will be funny.

A veritable Ric Flair of International Footballing. That's why I'm pulling for them. That little snotnosed punk Christiano Ronaldo notwithstanding.

I know it was the Fourth and all, but I CAN'T be the only one who watched yesterday's match. It was FANTASTIC. I told pieman I was going to root for Italy following the US elimination but I found myself wanting Germany to win more the longer the game went on, just to see the mad show of emotion that surely would've followed a Germany goal. That said, Italy really had the superior scoring chances and they deserved a better fate than going out on PKs, so I was glad to see them pull it out in the end.

We are headed to my in-laws this sunday for Sunday Dinner and the Game. Should be absolute bedlam as there will be a minimum of 20 loud & crazy italians yelling & screaming, living & dying and that will be just during the antipasta....

What a goal at the 119m mark - 2nd best goal of the tourney to me behind the amazing chest trap one-timer by the argentinian player against Mexico in OT

Italy 1 France 0

Every World Cup (and Euro Championship) I always say "Anyone but Italy", and of course, here they are in the final. I'm just happy it's not Italy-Portugal, where the teams would be competing for best dive instead of the championship.

So I'm hoping the French pull it off, but my head tells me the Italian 'keeper will be the difference and they'll be partying in my old Toronto neighbourhood (Little Italy).

I'm another 'Anyone but Italy' soccer fan. However, in Italy's defense, they're not playing like the Italy of old (with the exception of the Australia game). They are actually attacking and creating a little offense. And, I can't express how happy I am that Portugal isn't in the final. The diving and complaining were completely repulsive and personified the stuff in soccer that makes me sick. I wish the refs were stricter about giving cards for diving. More importantly, FIFA should use replay and suspend players who go down without contact, especially those who do so in the penalty area. That would do a lot to clean up some of the acting. Of course, if that were done, Portugal would have had a hard time fielding a complete team.

Zidane's headbutt to the Italian's chest was one of the more insane things I've seen in sports.

Europeans are weird.

Those Melendez elbows were incredibly hellacious. I had a sneaking suspicion that Jardine/Mousasi was going to be a draw, since Jardine had gotten a bunch of takedowns in the first round.
