It is rare that the "Cheese-eating surrender monkeys" deserve any praise or thanks... but they did outdo themselves here...

The French didn't surrender and they weren't led by a Corsican? Oh God, its the sixth sign, everyone head for the hills.

I was hoping someone was going to say they got replaced with shadow puppets or stuffed bears and went back to doing real work. Oh well, guess I just did.

Marty doesn't need surgery. This is a great day. I almost feel like I can say, I don't care that the Steelers lost. Again.

No, the French Army always does great in Africa. Sometimes the Nazis happen to be marching through the Arc D'Triumph at the same time though.

Good to hear that they're all safe.

I wonder if people call the dutch cowards because they surrendered a couple of times too.

The Dutch didn't have one of the largest militaries and economies on the planet when they surrendered.

True enough. Of course, the Motherland (Britan) had the advantage of being an island, and it was only after Hitler handed France it's own butt that people actually decided to step in and do something to him.

I admit I do have a minor problem with people always saying all Frenchmen are cowards. A good number of French fought resistence during Hitler's occupation of the country. Of course, I'm from France decent, so I guess my opinion is a little bit biased.

Hey! We never surrendered!
Well..ok..in WW2, but who didn't?
Usually we either weasel our way out of the conflict and make money of it, or we are just ignored..
And in that one case of the 80 year war, we just went on and on until everyone got tired
I don't understand this thing of hating the French for surrendering to Germany. It was the only way for the country to survive. They made some tactical errors and were crushed. England and Russia were able to fight back and stay alive due to some errors on the Nazi side. That's it.

It's not just fact that they surrendered. It's:

The fact they surrendered without even a freaking fight! Don't give me this "they had no choice" bullshit. Hey, the Germans knew they were beat, but still street-fought through Berlin for christsakes. It took two Atom Bombs to finish off the Japanese. And these are the people that LOST the war. For the French, all it took was the thought of their beautiful, cultured city of Paris being dirtied and they decided it would be better just to sit back, help the Nazis kill the racially impure, and wait this one out. Heck, a bunch of starving Jews in Warsaw fought off the Nazis longer than the French did.

Yes, sure their army was in North Africa (why the fuck they were there is beyond me, did they not notice the war going on and the fact that Germany happened to be RIGHT NEXT TO THEM?). But considering retirees in London withstood the blitz and pretty much everyone who was old enough to fire a gun and drink vodka in Russia (which is everyone over 12) stood up and fought when the Nazis invaded them, I'd think your average Frenchman could put down his Chablis and Brie for 10 seconds. Of course now they'll all tell you they were in the resitance. Right.

And on top of all this, after America, Britain and Russia (I'm not one of those "America won WWII" people, I give credit mainly to the Ruskies) save their sorry ass, we don't even get a "Thank-You." We get some bullshit about the French resistance army "liberated" Paris and a big cover-up over how the French were all-too-happy to help the Nazis when they were in there. If they at least came-clean and faced reality about that whole thing (which they have been better about these last 10 years or so), we wouldn't complain as much.

Let's also not forget the Maginot Line. The French, too retarted militarily to learn from past expieriences, built the Maginot Line to defend themselves from the Germans. Good idea. Two problems.

1. The French did not continue the line up to include the Belgian border; where the Germans invaded in WWI.

2. The French built the Maginot Line in such a way that the guns couldn't be turned around to shoot the Germans that got behind the line thanks to reason # 1.

And I would be remiss if I didn't mention Dienbienphu at this point...

The question of why the French fighting forces are mocked are this:
1870: Second Empire does the job in about 2 weeks to the Prussians, leading to the usual French tradition of fighting each other in the streets instead of fighting the enemy.
1940: It took less than a month for the French to j-o-b to the Germans, I mean, the Polish put more of an effort up by sending the cavalry at German tanks (sidenote, this is the reason for Polish jokes).
Since 1700, the only time the French Army has not been a joke was when Napoleon was running the show, and that was only because Corsica became part of France a year before Napoleon was born.

I COULD say something about that the USA pilot who got shot down in a STEALTH BOMBER. Or maybe I could mention the fact that a couple of US pilots killed four allies and injured several others while they were doing a training session. Or should I say something about how the USA was perfectly content to produce arms but not get involved into the war until they were attacked directly? Do I need to get into Vietnam? If you want to play the 'lets hold the past against them" card, then play the game for your own country too. And hey, germany started TWO world wars, you guys hold anything agonst them?

My apologies if I come across crass or anything, but I've heard this a lot, and it pisses me off everytime I hear of 'french cowardness'. My ancseters were not nice people I know that much and they had way more than their share of faults. But a couple had noble values and honor, and they fought resistence in that war for their homeland. So did quite a few others too.

Vietnam: When the U.S. tried to bail out the French for the third time in the 20th century. The problem people have with the French resistance claim is that while some were members of the resistance, many who claim to have been part of the resistance joined about 5 minutes after the Germans left Paris.

If all the people who claim to have resisted the Nazis actually did, it's a wonder how they got past that Munich beer hall. I take all these claims, not matter by who, with more than a grain of salt. Unless the person's other alternative would have been Aushwitz of course, in which case I'll take their word for it.

I COULD say something about that the USA pilot who got shot down in a STEALTH BOMBER. Or maybe I could mention the fact that a couple of US pilots killed four allies and injured several others while they were doing a training session.

There's a big diffence between one guy screwing up and letting the Nazis overrun your country without even a fight.

Or should I say something about how the USA was perfectly content to produce arms but not get involved into the war until they were attacked directly?

Wait, you mean like how France right now doesn't want us to get involved with Iraq until we are attacked directly? It seems like they should like this policy.

Do I need to get into Vietnam?

See above post.

If you want to play the 'lets hold the past against them" card, then play the game for your own country too. And hey, germany started TWO world wars, you guys hold anything agonst them?

At least Germany has apologized, come clean, and tried to deal with their past. As I said before, if France just said "we were pussies, we're sorry, we should have fought and not given all our Jews to the Nazis, thank you America, Britain and Russia for saving our country" then it would be fine.

There are plenty of posts of mine in other threads that take my country to task for fucking up in the past. This thread's about France.
