Ok, I've noticed we tend to come back to discussions about these games, sometimes years later. Because of that, I'd like to break out the conversation into this thread instead of having it in the release thread.

Please use the spoiler tags when appropriate. I know this will seem funny 5 years from now but I don't want it ruined for me today. Spoiler tags use the brackers [ ] with the word spoiler and /spoiler to close it out.

Thanks!

Let me know what you think so far - I think I'm probably buying it the first time I see it for under $60.

I love it so far. I'm about 6-7 hours in. I don't mind the linearity as much as other people. I think it provides a good framework for a strong narrative. I'm ok with all of the characters except for Vanille. She makes me want to punch babies.

While I can believe that you are annoyed by Vanille, and other people have told me the same, I'm much more annoyed by Hope. He is such a little bitch at this point (about 4 hours in).

I'm 25th in line on Goozex, so hopefully I'll have this by summer.

I think Hope's allowed to be a little bitch, though. I mean, if I had witnessed what he saw at the beginning of the game, I'd be a little upset too. I think the voice acting is a little weak with the weird grunts and "sex noises" (according to my wife) that he and Vanille make when trying to show frustration. He has seemed to calm down to the point where I'm compelled by him.

Lightning is all kinds of great. Sure, she follows the mold of Cloud and Squall in that she's the tough loner. She is awesome doing it. I'd pick her to lead a party anytime rather than those jabronies from 7 & 8!

I'm about 6 hours in and am enjoying pretty much everything about it. Vanille only slightly annoys me!

I really have to say though, all the OMG TOO LINEAR whining is pretty silly. Having played every single game in the series(even Mystic Quest!), the first 15 hours or so are always linear. You're shepherded on a set path the entire way. Sure, you may see an I interesting cave/town off the beaten path, but chances are there will be soldiers guarding the entrance for whatever reason that won't leave until a certain point is reached in the game.

I'm less than 5 hours in, so my view is uninformed, but so far, so good. My only concern is getting used to the new battle dynamics, especially Paradigm Shifts. I don't like the fact that I can't directly control the other party members. FFXII had a nice control balance with the Gambit system. I think I'll miss that.

Ok I've got to say now that by about 30 hours in I was wondering if I was EVER going to get to the more open world of Pulse. The 5th Ark section seemed to drag on forever. HowEVAH, the open area to explore in Pulse is HUGE, I'm really enjoying it.

I'm with Torchslasher on this one. Hope is more annoying than Vanille. I know he lost his mother, but still, he also kind of sucks in the battles I've used him in. Other than Hope I like the other characters and it's pretty rare for me to only dislike one character.

I'm not crazy about not being able to control all the characters in battle but overall I like the battle system. The different combos of paradigms and shifting between one and other along with the stagger system makes the game a lot more strategic. The battles are also more fast paced. Personally, I like old school slow battles, but I could see how they would want to speed up the battles to try and compete with other games.

Did you end up buying it yet? Joystiq has a code that allows you to buy it for $43 from Gamestop.

By all means, post your thoughts. I've had the top spot on Goozex for about a month now, waiting until classes are over before I take a swing at it, and I'd like to know if it's worth my time or not.

Where do you stand with this now? I was originally right there with there with you. However, now that I'm 21 hours into the game, I like the new system a lot. I feel that I am still very much in control of the other party members during battle and that the decision making on what approach to take during the battle is far a greater challenge than in previous games.

I'm enjoying this game. Can't wait to see the open world, I've gotta be getting close.

I don't actually own one, but as I understand things and from playing on a friends PSP for a bit.. get Lumines. If you ever enjoyed tetris, it will be your favorite game.
