Meltzer is reporting that tonight might be the last ECW show under that name, with Vince himself being on the show tonight to discuss it.

Some would say the end of ECW occurred far earlier than tonight.

I call those people "smart marks."

Tonight I think many people will be calling it "the second hour of the Lost premiere."

Godspeed, men of the 2nd Bn, 127th Infantry, 32d "Red Arrow" Brigade, Wisconsin Army National Guard! Victory in Iraq!

Naw, "Thunder" got incorporated into that soon-to-be-on-Mondays show on Spike: "Thunder!? Not AGAIN." HAW HAW HAW

But seriously, Lords of Pain says the official name is...

...wait for it...

...WWE NXT.

"WWE had trademarked "NXT" to use for the new Tuesday night show on the SyFy network. Sources have confirmed that ECW will now be called WWE NXT, with the NXT standing for Next Generation.

"Apparently the show will be built around an entirely new cast of characters with the idea that WWE fans can see these characters develop and debut only on SyFy. Expect a lot of talents from WWE developmental to be called up. More details on the new WWE show should be made clear tonight."

So they're turning it into a giant OVW? Bad idea. You want to limit how much you expose your green guys. ECW is a show I don't think I ever watched even a whole segment of. Partly, that's due to my never liking the original ECW anyway, and secondly, because I knew it was going to be a watered-down version of something I didn't like, which could only be worse. If this year is the year we put "Montreal screwjob" and "ECDUBB" to rest forever, it'll be better for the business overall.

ECW is currently the most fun hour of wrestling on TV, so this disappoints me greatly. It's basically Christian, Regal, Goldust, Helms and Benjamin grooming a bunch of youngsters with feuds that are paid off on TV, and it's fantastic.

I actually think that showcasing your minor league talent on a C level show is the smart move. I always heard about OVW and wanted to see OVW, but never got to. If Jack Swagger or Kofi Kingston just show up on Raw, you are building from scratch. It's a smart way to see what and who sticks and what doesn't before they hit the bigger shows. Otherwise Tito Ortiz comes on Raw with a big push and someone like Kofi gets the light heavyweight treatment.

I'm guessing you mean Ricky, because Tito probably SHOULD get a big push. :)

Well, I think it speaks to the old death of the territories argument. Those who think the business is poorer for the lack of territories would probably argue that if a guy did something and it bombed, but they were in Mid-South or Championship Wrestling for Florida or wherever it was, the idea is that talent could go to another territory and play to an audience that had never seen him fail. If you failed in the WWF, you were basically fucked. Probably the example that leaps to mind is Terry Taylor. After being the Red Rooster, he could never again be taken seriously. That's the biggest flaw with the system WWE has in place is if guys don't succeed right out of the gate, the fans already have a certain perception in place. And this ECW to NXT move is something they're doing not to keep the audeince small, but to expand the audience, specifically in response ot SyFy putting pressure on them to do so.

We can no longer say that the WWE isn't making new stars. because that is what they are about to try and do.

I think between the Sheamus title reign and the major pushes for Kofi, Miz, and McIntyre, it's fair to say that they've BEEN trying to make new stars. This is just the next step.

They've also made Batista, Edge, Cena, and Orton big stars in recent years.

I am all for the new stars. I wonder though if they'll be traveling with smackdown crew, or if it will be taped someplace and edited to remove any screwups.

My question is what happens to the title? Does Christian lose it and we have a tourney for a new one or does it get changed via Austin's Smoking Skull belt? The problem with the way they build new stars is 80% they are heels that look exactly the same. There and minor changes here and there, but for most part you couldn't pick them out of a line-up. Yoshi is the only new comer with talent and a majority has to do with being in Japan for a lot of years. For all the John Cenas and Ortons they have created there are a ton of Zach Ryders in that bunch.

I'm guessing Chumpstain is referring to an episode of Jakked, on which Hurricane used the Vertebreaker for the win over a certain no-name guy that goes by A.J. Styles.
