I've posted in the past about the SI cover jinx, which was again in full effect this NFL season..

but what about players who have graced the cover of EA sports video games and their tendancy to go down with serious injuries..

Add Vince Carter (nba live 2004) to the list that includes Almost EVERY Madden Box Cover in the last 10 years...

wierd.

Its really more just Madden than anything else. You're grasping at straws with the NBA thing.

In the context of baseball, the use of drugs hurts only the player. In the context of baseball, the use of alcohol hurts only the player. In the context of baseball, womanizing hurts whom? Maybe the wife of the player? In the context of baseball, felonies are crimes against society, not against baseball. In the context of baseball, gambling is the only crime against baseball.

Gambling, in the context of baseball, is a capital offense and Rose has richly earned-- hell, he agreed to-- his death sentence. Let him hang.

Eddie George was on the cover of Madden 2001 and didn't miss a game that year, or any year. It was the only time he failed to gain 1,000 yards in a season though.

Well what about Video Games named after players.

Ken Griffey Jr. and Tiger Woods come to mind.

EDIT: Mike Tyson :)

Kenny Wheaton's gonna score! Kenny Wheaton is gonna score! 20, the 10, Touchdown! Kenny Wheaton on the interception, the most incredible finish to the football game!" www.eatmyassbeavernation.com

I think boxer's have more to fear than anyone else as far as having games named after them. Then again, if the company that named their game James 'Buster' Douglas Boxing expected it to have long term sales appeal, they should have probably stuck to making games about sports they actually knew something about.

Griffey was a sure-shot HOF'er when his games were out, and Tiger won the player of the year last year. Sosa's game sucked, but when he was the spokesman for the game, he probably hit around 50 or 60 taters (Vlad Guerrero has also been the spokesman for this game). I have the feeling that Warners lousiness has been a combination of the loss of Dick Vermeil, and just one of those things where he caught lightning in a bottle for one season.

There is definatly an NHL EA sports cover jinx.

Dan Heatley is on the cover of NHL 2004 (Car crash).

Jarome Iginla is on the cover of NHL 2003 (sub par season after posting 50 goals the year before. Calgary was hoping to make the playoffs but Iginla's early season struggles were a large factor in that not happening).

Mario Lemiuex is on the cover of NHL 2002 (Missed most of the 2002-2003 season after having an amazing comeback the year before. The Penguins started the plummet that has them at the bottom of the nhl. He did win a gold medal at the Olympics).

Owen Nolan is on the cover of NHL 2001 (Played in only 57 games and scored 20 goals after collecting 44 goals in 78 games the year before).

Chris Pronger is on the cover of NHL 2000 (Well, he won the Hart Trophy that year... but he was hurt for part of the next season).

There's also NHL 99 and about the time Eric Lindros starting taking shots to the head like he was boxing in Manilla.

But I think once you get to Joe Sakic, the line of jinxes sorta stops there. Actually that's not true. One morning in 1997, it took Sakic more than his normal 2 minutes to find his car keys one morning as he was leaving the house to go to practice and just *barely* made it on time. That was Sakic's version of being cover-jinxed.

This is off the subject, but Griffey's game was the best baseball game EVAR. It was the Tecmo Super Bowl of baseball games.

Most obvious video jinx was Terrell Davis in 1998/1999. But naw, I don't think EA is that big of a jinx. I have an old copy of Triple Play99 with Alex Rodriguez, and NBA Live 2000 with Tim Duncan. Oh yeah, Roger Clemens had a Nintendo game in the early 90's, which was 3 or 4 Cy Youngs ago.

Of all people, Bill Swift was the coverboy for World Series baseball in 1995! The year started okay for him, but he soon became Victim #2 of the Rockies Pitcher Syndrome (RPS). Along those lines, who're some of the oddest cover boys for sports games?Someone mentioned Buster Douglas...I'd count that one.
