We need someplace to put all the draft news that may or may not come down the pipes during the next few days. Maybe.

Also, I wanted to talk about the Broncos/Skins pick trade (msn.foxsports.com) and that doesn't need a whole thread of its own.

So I guess Denver has decided that there's nobody they want in the first round this year? That picking up the Browns' entire D-line is going to set them on prospects? That seems a little warped to me. I realize that picking up another third rounder and another first and fourth next year is pretty good, but I just don't understand dropping a first round selection without at least getting a semi-decent starter in the deal.

Picking up the Browns D-Line is still one of the most questionable thing I've seen in years. However, this trade does have some interesting potential for Denver. Unless the Redskins make the second round of the playoffs; which most would agree is highly unlikely, the Broncos will come out ahead in draft position, while at the same time picking up a mid 3 this year and a 4 next year. There is actually a far greater chance that Denver gets a high 1 next year rather than a pick lower than what they gave up. And, if they want someone badly in the first round, they have extra picks to deal with.

Unless this is part 1 of a 2 part trade for the Skins I am having trouble understanding their thinking.

3 picks (1 this year and 2 next) for a late round pick this year? I think if they had waited until draft day they could have pulled this off for less and could have guarenteed that the player they are targetting would still be there.

The only ways this makes sense, to me anyway, is if they are looking to package their picks and trade up. Or if they are close to an agreement with a team on a trade for a player. There have been rumors of a C. Woodson trade to the Skins for a week now. But that seems less likely given Buchanon was traded yesterday. But then the Moss trade was declared dead when the Raiders resigned Porter.

IMO, if the Skins stand pat they got swindled. The broncos now have the Amo to move up and get their man or wait until next year when the top of the draft should be stronger and get a playmaker.

According to yesterday's Herald and this morning's Sun-Sentinel, the rumor mill keeps moving regarding the #2 pick. Right now, it seems to boil down to one of three scenarios:

1) Miami keeps the pick, drafts either Alex Smith or Ronnie Brown, depending on what the Niners do.

2) Miami deals the pick to Tampa Bay for their #5 and two other picks (Miami wants the rest of Tampa's Saturday picks) and the Dolphins take Brown/Williams/Bensen.

3) Miami deals the pick to Minnesota for their #s 7 and 18 (and prolly a 2nd or 3rd as well) so the Vikings can draft Braylon Edwards at #2, Miami gets choice of 2 out of the 3 lottery RBs and most likely Carlos Rogers, Marlin Jackson or Jammal Brown at #18.

I just assumed that Washington wanted an extra first round pick so that they could get both a receiver and a corner as they need both and the draft in front heavy with lots of talent in these areas. I'm still scratching my head over the idea of the 49ers taking the shotgun QB over the drop-back QB.

Interesting rumor - since SF is leaning toward Smith, Miami may trade (Minnesota?) to a team that wants Edwards. This would leave Cleveland to choose between Ronnie Brown or Aaron Rodgers. Since neither man is what Cleveland is really looking for (WR, defense), this would allow a team to trade with the Browns to attempt to draft Brown.

Boy, that would be neato. Although to be honest, I would think the Browns would select Mike Williams in that case. If they can trade that pick and load up on picks in the process, GREAT. But I'll be damned if I want to see a Michigan player on the Browns again. Edwards just rubs me the wrong way, and I would love to cheer against him.

(Of course, that didn't stop the Browns from getting Winslow last year.)

Ditto. As a (disgruntled) Vikings fan, I'd hate to have to root for a player from That School Up North. But what I don't get is that everything I've been reading seems to suggest that Mike Williams is a better prospect. Kiper even has him as the top prospect on the board. Where's all this Edwards talk coming from?

Williams hasn't had any impressive workouts and he also hasn't played football in a year. Edwards had better workouts and was dominant at times last year. I don't think its that hard to understand why Edwards would be rated higher. Although, now that I say that Kiper has Williams higher on his draft board.

The real fun of the Redskins trade is that they apparently want Jason Campbell. Except that the Packers really like Campbell too and have the pick right before them.

Really? I hadn't heard anything about us liking Campbell. I've heard Frye from Akron as a potential second rounder. Personally, if the guy isn't playing THIS YEAR, I don't want him drafted (that means no drafting the QB of the future while we still have Favre).

PS - Kudos on having "Favre" in the spelling dictionary :-)

No, no, a thousand times no! There's no need to mortgage the entire first day just to move up three spots! There's no question Cadillac or Benson will still be there at #5 and both would be just fine. Don't be stupid, Allen...

Kiper has Williams pegged as a better "long term" pick, in that he probably won't contribute in any significant way to a team THIS year (because of his year away from football), but he has the best chance of becoming a premier player a few years down the road, once he's in top playing shape, he'll be better than Edwards. Edwards is the more attractive prosepect for a lot of teams (including the Vikings) now, because because he's ready to go.

Take this for what you will though: Chris Carter has been in Tice's ear for a few weeks now, begging him to take Williams. Apparently, Williams attended Carter's training camp and pre-draft camp and has been studying pro-routes and Defense film since he left USC, and might be more mentally ready for a pro-defense than any other player in the draft. The Vikings might be gunshy about pulling the trigger on a guy who hasn't taken a hit in a year, but if he's as up to snuff as Carter claims, I could see Tice trusting his opinion.

Also: If the Vikings take Erasmus James with the 18th pick, I will be a happy happy man for at least that one day.

Now that Norm Chow is the Titans Offensive Coordinator, I wonder how much consideration Mike Williams will get. There are only 2 WRs on the Titans roster now, so it is definitely a need, but so is CB.

Plus, Jeff Fisher is a USC alum (as if that really has much to do with it) ...

If Mike Williams makes it to the Titans pick I will be sorely disappointed. I sleep at night with visions of Mushin Muhammed lining up on one side of the formation and Mike Williams on the other for my Bears. Instead I have the fear we're going to end up with another 2 backs splitting time backfield where no one is happy after we get Cedric Benson/Ricky Williams II, and Mushin gets triple teamed because Bobby Wade is our #2 WR.

Yeah, but Spielman kicked ass. We got Derrick Alexander and Leroy Hoard. The coolest thing Hoard did was catch a Bernie TD pass while lying on his back against the Steelers. Okay, that and getting turned around so he stumbled backward into the end zone against the Jest. But otherwise, fumble, fumble, fumble.

In all actuality, it's not so much the school, but the attitude. For example, I like Tom Brady, and Steve Everitt was fantastic. Edwards seems more of a "Me, me, me" player.

Which is why he'll be a fantastic pro. Great wide receivers, by far, have much more of an ego than any other position. Give me a guy like Edwards that demands the ball every time because he believes he can beat anybody and I'll go to town with him. I'd much rather have a guy who's griping that he isn't getting the ball enough than a guy who's going to develop alligator arms when he goes across the middle.

I would be very happy if the Browns took Edwards. I watched him a lot in college and one thing I noticed about him was that every time the ball went up, he had an attitude about him that said "that ball is mine" and went and got it. It didn't matter if he was going to get absolutely belted by making the catch _ he still went for it.

Apparantly, Gruden has the hots for Alex Smith, so if you factor in that they're offering Cleveland Chris Simms for a 3rd round pick, they'd get back the 3rd rounder Miami wants in the same range.

The part that I don't understand is why Gruden's willing to mortgage for Alex "Shotgun-Only" Smith. Minnesota deciding they want to trade up from #7 for Braylon Edwards, sure. But this to me makes less sense.

I don't think any moves get made, though, until San Francisco makes it clear what their intentions are. If they decide to go with Smith and sign him before the draft, all bets are off.

OMG The Skins are after Braylon Edwards. We might actually be able to draft an offensive kid that is worth a damn.

Here are some of our 1st round offensive picks of shame:

year pick player pos school
2002 32 PATRICK RAMSEY QB TULANE
2001 15 ROD GARDNER WR CLEMSON
1995 4 MICHAEL WESTBROOK WR COLORADO
