Are you guys feelin' it or what? I've only heard the song that is out right now, "Believe in Love", but it makes me want to rock out with my cock out. I'm very tempted to by the cd after hearing just this one song, I can't sample because my computer doesn't make sound, but I think it may be worth the risk. If you haven't heard this song yet get out of the dark... and into the darkness LOL2004!
No joke dude ... that tune is so infectious; it reminds me of Queen ... who does catch themselves walking around the house squealing "tooouchin' you-ou-ou, tooochin' me-e-ee ..."
So you say that the rest of the album is pretty sweet? I may have to check that one out.
And here I thought it was only me! I've been walking around work singing that under my breath for weeks now. That video is better than anything else on MTV also.

Every video needs a squid humping something. Or something getting humped by something else. Oh hell, more humping, period.
But yeah, that song's classic. And I had BDL's reaction to the song, too.

Lord Jesus have mercy on my soul, this cd is a gift from God himself. These boys may be taking hair metal to an all new level, but sadly I don't think the world is quite ready for it yet. I highly recomend that you track down the song 'Love on the Rocks, (with no ice)' if you aren't into buying things, but you should really stop being a cheap bastard and buy this cd as a gift to yourself, you deserve it.
I guess I'm the only one on this board that thinks they're fucking terrible. Just what the world needs, a third rate Def Leppard 20 years after the original was last relevant.

The point is that The Darkness are generally having good natured fun with the ridiculous nature of 80s hair metal that fans of that music can enjoy as well as letting the Radiohead/Coldplay fans of the world enjoy it in an 'ironic' way.

As always, Jane (ddywnyc.com) was on the cutting edge. While this outfit will be nothing new to you in 2004, it *was* quite a big deal in September when none of us except Jane had any idea who the heck The Darkness was!
Follow-up: I don't know if it was a mistake or not, but the CD was marked $12.99 and then had $8.99 written on the sticker. This was at the Borders in Mission Valley - your milage may vary.
Willful ignorance of science is not commendable. Refusing to learn the difference between a credible source and a shill is criminally stupid.

My sitch was weird like that, too. It was marked at 9.99, and sold for 7.99. I didn't complain, though.

But if you don't enjoy hair metal in any way, don't like the kitschy British bands that if you don't like, you're told you "don't understand it"(ala Radiohead), and absolutely hate falsetto singing? I really think right now rock radio is at it's worst place like... ever? All I hear when I turn it on is screamo and the Darkness(which is the #1 song here right now, unfortunately).

there is an article in SPIN Magazine that touches on the Darkness in an interesting way (the cover has the lead singers of the Darkness, the Distillers, Interpol, and thursday)
the main line that caught me (and i am a fan of the writer's monthly coulmn, so i would give his opinions attention) was quite telling, considering the posts i've seen in this thread; to paraphrase: "the problem w/ the american audience is that they can't allow their art to work on multiple levels" the writer went on to explain it as the fact that we're either going to look at this band as a funny parody of hair metal, or an actual hair metal revival... as always, the answer lies in the middle, as the darkness seem to be a tounge in cheek view of "spinal tap" (considering that video), but also have the talent to write a good song.....
so, can the USA handle this band as both a parody and a legit band?

Well, Brittney Spears, Justin Timberlake, and Eminem are all considered legit by the majority of Americans; When in fact they are parodies of musicians. Oh, and our cultural flag bearers as well...God are we fucked.
I don't know though, maybe the whole 80's parody stuff would have worked better in the 90's, when it was cool to hate the 80's. Almost 15 years later the cliche has been buried under so many other levels of cliche, it has kinda lost its impact. It's like seeing an Iraq war protester with tassels on the shirt and flowers in their hair; Sorry I'm an open minded guy, but you are a damn joke. Your a joke of a joke. Your a joke of a joke of a joke damnit.
I was trying to describe the pure SWANKNESS of the song and especially the video to Mrs. JJD the other day (unsuccessfully). The giant crab chucking the rock at the lead singers and the lasers coming out the guitars clinched it for me. I damn near came here to post an "are they for real or not?" thread myself, because the whole presentation had such a Spinal Tap-ish feel, especially the lead singer and his awful teeth.

Nah. This kind of cultural retro(spective) always happens 20 years after the fact. Remember retro-50s throwbacks Sha-na-na and Happy Days in the late 70s? Remember the huge retro-60s movement in the second half of the 80s? Remember disco actually making a comeback, starting with Deelite's "Groove Is In the Heart" in the mid-90s? Probably all the 30-year-old artists and consumers looking fondly back at their pre-teen days.
It usually starts out as parody and joke songs. Then a few years later it becomes ernest. This is why I dislike the Darkness even though that song is catchy as all hell -- it is opening the door for a flood of hair-metal bands to rule the airwaves in 2005 and 2006. "Believe in Love" will do for hair-metal what "Groove Is In the Heart" did for disco ... it is raising it from its well deserved grave.
Don't know the reason, stayed here all season, Nothing to show but this brand new tattoo. But it's a real beauty, a Mexican cutie, How it got here I haven't a clue.
