Finally got to see this, earlier than anticipated but much later than I wanted. Anyway, I agree with those saying it was good, but clearly No. 3 in the Nolan Batman hierarchy.

Bane was awesome, and I agree that his reading Gordon's speech was awesome. I also loved the opening scene and the reveal of Bane on the airplane. Cain was great as Alfred, as usual. I also like a lot the dude from 3rd Rock From the Sun whose name I can never remember. All around great acting.

When I left the theater, I was actually really sad, because I misunderstood the ending and thought Wayne had died. I had interpreted the scene at the French coffee shop with Alfred to be a callback to Ras al-Gul's appearance in the prison, driving home the point that "legends are immortal, living on after they die" or some lame shit. It wasn't until someone else overheard me talking about it on the way out and pointed out the significance of the auto-pilot being fixed that I got it.

I did think the reveal of Robin was kind of lame. It didn't hurt the movie or anything, but it didn't really seem to serve much purpose. All I could think of was that Family Guy bit making fun of Robin. Robin without Batman is just kind of pointless. But I digress.

All told, it was a satisfying end to the trilogy, and it is hard for me to imagine anyone ever doing Batman this well again.

I think you also missed the point that Robin John Blake isn't going to be Robin (the Boy Wonder, or even Nightwing). He inherited the Batcave and the Batsuit from Bruce Wayne. The point was Robin John Blake will become the Batman if Gotham City needs the Batman again.

No I definitely got that, but Nolan's already on the record saying no more Batman for him, right? So it's just pointless, it's not going anywhere. Blake isn't going to become Batman anymore than he's going to become Robin. I get why the implication of Blake taking over the Batsuit made sense, but it was specifically the Robin shout out that had me rolling my eyes.

I can't remember what immediately followed the reveal, but I was annoyed because I missed a line while the two guys behind me laughed and talked about Blake's real name being Robin. They could have achieved the same thing without invoking Robin's name (not Nolan's fault, of course). It doesn't even really make sense in the Batman universe, does it? I've never read the comics.

Anyway, again, it's really nothing. Detracted from the movie in no way whatsoever. I just didn't see the reason for that particular reveal in the long string of shocking reveals at the end.

Yeah but
basic police training =/= League of Shadows Super Assasin Training
so that might be an incredibly short stint.

No training for Terry McGuiness = 3 amazing seasons and cameos on JLU. If he techs out the suit like Terry did, then he will be fine.

True. He'd probably get access to Wayne Enterprises' Applied Sciences technology, though. Robin also has a whole Wayne Manor of kids above the Batcave to train.

I know what you mean. I don't think it's pointless. It's simply thematic and symbolic. Batman is more than Bruce Wayne, the man. Batman is a symbol and a legend. Batman will continue and will rise again if needed. It doesn't matter if we get to see it or not or if any movies are ever made about Robin John Blake as Batman.

Finally saw it. Great movie, but def not the best.

I didn't check my watch once, but for a stretch I realized what a Batman movie without Batman would be like.

I had no difficulty whatsoever understanding Bane's words, but I swear he spoke in Scottish, German, Yiddish, and southern accents at different points in the movie. Loved the portrayal, even if it reeked of every Bond villain ever, but they nailed Bane spot on from Knightfall.

The league of Shadows went from being a bunch of ninjas to a bunch of bad guys from Modern Warfare.

EDIT: I think the point of the Robin reveal was more that, while Robin the Boy Wonder won't actually be in these movies, Batman still couldn't do it alone and still needed a sidekick (and Catwoman and Blake both made great sidekicks) and was also planning for a world where someone could continue in his absence. Rather than just have Blake be some non-Batman mythos character, Nolan threw in a bone that he was the Robin-equivalent and that was how he was going to handle that character. Personally, I loved the reference because Robin is just such a huge part of the Batman mythology that, while he never quite fit the Nolanverse, it was a great way to work him in.

Batman really did become a legend, more than just one man, and that it will endure forever. Batman has been immortalized and accepted by society and that the legend will endure far beyond Bruce Wayne's involvement.

The whole of all three movies is in Katie Holmes' speech to Bruce at the end of Batman Begins, where she says that Bruce Wayne never really returned to Gotham. Batman did. The face criminals feared was who Bruce became. All three movies were about bringing Bruce back and getting him to move on with his life. The last little bit of him died with Rachel in TDK. Or did it? He hasn't lost everything - he still has Gotham, and ultimately, he still has his life.

What Bruce learns in the pit is that, "yeah daddy told you not to be afraid, but fear of death is okay because that's what makes you alive." That's why Bruce is able to make it when he takes the rope off, because the will to live kicks in and Bruce Wayne realizes that he isn't quite as dead as he thought inside. Bruce Wayne still wants to live on some basic level.

So the movies are more about Bruce Wayne and his enduring legacy than they really are about Batman. Wayne will really die someday but not before finally living his life the way his parents wanted, and his wake he's created an everlasting symbol. But that symbol is unhealthy for whoever takes up the mantle and does have a shelf life.

Does Blake become Batman? Maybe. He could become Nigthwing. Maybe Robin. Maybe he falls off a building and dies right away. Not important. Maybe Mr. Freeze puts him in permanent cryo-freeze. But, Blake's a smart kid. He'll probably be okay.

What's important is that the legacy survives. What happens next isn't addressed because that's Blake's story, not Bruce Wayne's.

I watched The Dark Knight Rises on IMAX for the third time, and when it was over, I was pondering the status of Commissioner Gordon. Specifically, what happens to him now that the lie about Harvey Dent has been exposed.

I posed the question of whether Jim Gordon gets a happy ending like Bruce Wayne did to my friend, who's an Assistant US Attorney, and this is the answer he gave. (backofthehead.com)

I love this answer. But I know there are attorneys here at The W, so I'd love to hear your thoughts as well.

There's also the fact that Bane was the one who revealed the Gordon/Dent truth, so it's not exactly the most reliable source. Presumably Gordon is enough of a straight-shooter (and was guilty enough about lying to begin with) that he came clean afterwards, but yeah, given everything else that happened in Gotham, the Dent stuff probably got swept under the rug.

Batman Begins biggest flaw to me is putting all of Bruce's shown training with the League of Shadows, with nary a mention of Ted Grant, Lady Shiva, or Zatara, etc...

That's why it feels like he'd be throwing on the suit with a fraction of Bruce's seasoning because we don't know these resources exist in Nolan's universe (though they probably have an equivalent)

Terry had
1) Bruce Wayne's personal guidance (Nolan's Wayne it too busy with Catwoman and retirement)
2) Bruce Wayne's genetics
3) A few more decades of technological development in his suit

We all love Batman Beyond, or at least we should, but it's hard to believe Blake would do all that well without #1 up there. Which he'd probably get in one way or another, but I guess we'll never know. Or get to see.

I don't think that it got swept under the rug, because Gotham was put in a "Batman or Dent" position after The Dark Knight. There's no way they'd immortalize Batman with a statue if they still believed he killed the DA. That would be too controversial for most people, I would think.

Even if Bane wasn't the most credible source, using him to expose the truth was Nolan's way of tying up the loose end of how to make Batman a hero to the public (not just to the kids who still believe in him, but to the law that he subverted). Once the truth was out, and the Dent Act caused more harm than good, I think Gordon wanted a way out as much as Gotham did.

I'm late to the party, but I just finally got to see this and The Amazing Spiderman yesterday (first free day in a while).

I'm with many that think this movie falls somewhere in between Dark Knight and Batman Begins, but I was surprised to find myself actually liking Spiderman more than TDKR. Just dragged too much in the middle and I found it flabbergasting that Gotham would just sit there for 80 days while the gov't wasn't able to do anything, save for sending in a special forces group or two.

And Bane's voice seemed pretty clear on the IMAX version I saw.

I'm shocked no one mentioned Lord Baelish (Littlefinger) from Game of Thrones being the guy on the plane in the opening scene.

Well, this was certainly inevitable.

Someone made a Bane soundboard. Some of these clips are poor audio quality, but there's plenty of gold to be found here.
