Monkey shit. That's how they survived. There was a specific mixture of chemicals & such in Ampersand's feculance that acted as an antigen to the plague, and enough of that crap got onto Ampersand and Yorick. Heck, #1 had Ampersand tossing shit across Yorick's apartment. Dr. Mann (the geneticist travelling with Yorick) theorized that the cure for the plague could be inside Ampersand...but Ampersand got stolen by a mysterious assassin.
