FOX'S LADIES: Per the Hollywood Reporter, the Barenaked Ladies signing a deal with Fox to star in a pilot for a comedy/variety show. The quintet will perform improv skits with guest stars and play music.

While I'm not a die hard fan of their music, I do dig them. They seem "quirky" enought to maybe pull off a show like this.

EDIT: Here's an article from Billboard with a little more info.

While they are the comedy/music types to be able to pull this off, it could also backfire to the point where their music careers might be affected negatively.

Any Canadian in his/her late 20's or older will remember the massive hype that accompanied their debut release, "Gordon". If memory serves me correct, it was 1992. The BNL were everywhere-every newspaper, radio station, and television, especially MuchMusic. Their wacky immature shenanigans were hilarious at first, then tiring, then..."change the channel." I think their next two releases did poorly as a result of the backlash. It took a lot of work (and success outside of Canada) to build them back up again.

I also recall that they performed at the Juno Awards one year dressed as clowns, ridiculing the perception of them.

edit: It's possible you may not enjoy a live performance more than one with the Barenaked Ladies performing.

100% correct. They became so overbearing so fast it wasn't funny.

While I think this concept may work for them, it might have come a few years too late.

They could end up being the present day Hudson Brothers. Some of you may have to look that one up.

Steven Page in the band's blog had this to say about any impending TV show:

"And for those who are curious about this tv show that they were talking about in the news, so far we've only been picked up for a pilot, which means it could possibly not even make it to air. However, the Fox folks have been great to work with, and we're all working hard to make this show as un-crappy as possible. We'd really like to make this show follow in the footsteps of our own personal favourites (no, not disappear into obscurity), and we're going to try our best not to make the show lame. Alas, I've been sworn to secrecy about the rest, but I'll update you as soon as I'm allowed to. "

I like BNL and all, but if they court this disaster, who'll point them home?

Rush's forthcoming release will be the greatest comeback album ever. April 2, 2002. Though, much like LL Cool J, I'm sure they'd hate me to call it a comeback. And loathe as I am to say it, Aerosmith's Permanent Vacation was good.
