I keep promising to put up some capsule reviews. This won't be one of them, but a stunning approximation nonetheless!

The Avalanches! I heard all the buzz about "Since I Left You" - monster hit in their native Australia, big in the UK, FINALLY being released in America at the end of November - only authorised Madonna sample on a release, the factoid people said - so I gave up and actually plunked down real money to buy it right around Christmastime. (Don't worry, it was on sale)

It's actually very good! They *are* sampleriffic but don't appear to be beholden to any one genre, unlike DJ Shadow, say - which isn't to pigeonhole Shadow but he DOES have his favourite areas to mine...these guys go all over the place to craft their pastiche and, a lot of the time, it works.

In a way, they remind me of the DeeJay Punk-Roc that Gancarski told me to get into - using the samples to make GROOVES that are GROOVY. Of course, it's a lot more sample-intensive and -laden than the Punk-Roc, but one DJ to another and all that.

I guess what I also like is that the tracks all have a FLOW so you can listen to the entire album all at once without identifying individual tracks. I'm sometimes pretty lazy about listening to CDs that way, usually, so I like it when they come that way. ;-)

Ummm. Once again I have described a CD without being any help at all! Somebody want to make the tag here? Or has anyone else caught this group yet?

I've heard of them a little, as the magazines are all buzzing on them and MTV 2 is playing the Enormously Cool video for Frontier Psychiatrist every now and again. I've been looking for someone or other to start talking about it or reviewing it before I buy, because I'm really really cheap, and I don't use the file sharing things, so I can't really gauge any of the other tracks that don't have the weird freaky video. But I'm into the whole sample-based musical stylings anyway. And this seems to be worth my trouble.

I think this is the next record I shall buy. Yes...

Unless I wait too long and the new DJ Shadow record comes out, which still seems to be sometime early this year. One thing on his site says February, one says April, so I dunno. Can't think of anything else I want, now that I finally caved on the OutKast compilation one. Which rules, by the way.

Frontier Psychatrist is the stand-out track on the album; the rest is good, but shy of being great.

Being an Australian, I've been digging on the Avalanches for quite some time.

They used to sound way different about 6 years ago and were kind of a hip hop band. This incarnation just ruled... the song "Rock City" still gets a good thrashing whenever my high school class gets together. They had a few other choice cuts like "Rollin' High" and "Undersea Community.

They sometimes play live, sometimes just a DJ set. The latter is quite boring

The DJs name is Dexta and the guy can cut it up. I think he was like 2nd in the world DMC championship a few years ago.

Techno/Electronic-style music is actually quite good in Australia. I can recommend the Resin Dogs, sonic animation, Endorphin, GT / Groove Terminator, love tattooo, paulmac / itchee-n-scratchee, and a whole lot of others if anyone is Audio Galaxy itchy.

A dreadful little band, who seem intent on taking turntablism and watering it down beyond all possible recognition, until it just ends up as... a bunch of Australians tossing about with samples.

It all seems too self-consciously "wacky", anyway, party music for people who go "Do you remember (insert quite famous kids TV show from 10 years back)?".

If only the Scratch Perverts were still around...
