A friend of mine Eugene Ahn aka Adam Warrock (www.adamwarrock.com) had his laptop stolen from a friend's car recently, so he decided to do a 24 Hour RAP-A-THON to raise the 2K that he needed to replace the lap-top - obviously key for him to make and perform music.
The remainder going to RAINN: The Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (www.rainn.org)
Here are the links to the songs that he recorded in order, along with my Twitter reviews. (I was tweeting them live as I heard them more or less, but ran out of steam after the 10th rap.)
#1 24 Hours (Beat Used: Atmosphere “I Don’t Need Brighter Days”) 4:03 (Longest) http://www.adamwarrock.com/AWR24_24hours.mp3 LLakor: Good start. Ends a bit abruptly. Declaration why he's doing this with typical Euge self-denigration. Works in meta-sense. Rap-A-Thon has abrupt arbitrary end (planned) as well.
#2 Good... (Beat Used: YU “MmmmHmmm”) 3:02 http://www.adamwarrock.com/AWR24_goodmp3.mp3 Llakor: Bit dreamy. Mind wandered. Intended to pay attention, forgot about it playing, started doing (other) stuff... (on the computer and then the song ended and I was upset I missed it. I have played the damn thing about 10 times since then and the same thing happens every single time.)
#3 Old Man Logan (Beat Used: Reks “All In One”) 2:33 http://www.adamwarrock.com/AWR24_oldmanlogan.mp3 Llakor: THIS IS THE SHIT! #SNIKT Euge = Genius. (My favourite opening line of the songs. The one that had me the most excited first time through.)
#4 Miss Me (Beat Used: P.O.S. “Been Afraid” ) 3:18 http://www.adamwarrock.com/AWR24_missme.mp3 Llakor: Moody, intricate & complicated. Like (Leonard) Cohen's The Future has layers: more you listen, more you hear. (Like that album I was suspicious the first time through, intrigued the second, inspired the third and borderline obsessed the 4th. Now my favourite of the raps of the day.)
#7 Forever (Beat Used: Evidence “Red Letter”) 2:30 http://www.adamwarrock.com/AWR24_forever.mp3 Llakor: Very much in the tradition of Starving Artist. Only Euge could start by joyously yelling "Red Tape!" (Euge said this was his favourite of the day when he recorded it. Starting a song by joyously shouting "Red Tape" is AWESOME and second only to "S-N-I-K-T" as the best start to a song on the day.)
#8 Birdwatching (Beat Used: Eligh “Miss Busdriver”) 3:22 http://www.adamwarrock.com/AWR24_birdwatching.mp3 Llakor: Most ambitious so far? Certainly the one that seems to make Euge most nervous. Strong 2nd to Miss Me. (Only song Euge nervously said that he hoped people liked.)
#11 The End of the World (Beat Used: Atmosphere “Scalp”) 2:23 http://www.adamwarrock.com/AW24_endworld.mp3 Llakor: Slow, bluesy "I been done wrong and I shoulda seen it coming" rap. (This was right after Euge started drinking Jameson.)
#12 Iron Fist (Beat Used: Action Bronson “The Stick Up”) 1:56 (Shortest) http://www.adamwarrock.com/AW24_ironfist.mp3 Llakor: 3rd nerd song after Old Man Logan & Scrooge McDuck. Rap as Martial Arts metaphor. Really great.
#14 Like a Tattooed Fist (Beat Used: DJ Babu “Fan Mail”) 2:38 http://www.adamwarrock.com/AW24_tattooedfist.mp3 Llakor: Mixing political & pop culture (Charles Laughton for the win!) Obviously tired but fatigue works here. (In the "tired of Republican crap" sense.)
#15 Cult (Beat Used: Hail Mary Mallon “Garfield”) 2:52 http://www.adamwarrock.com/AW24_cult.mp3 Llakor: Best lyrics. Can't decide if I want to hear fresh recording or if "tired of bullshit" exhaustion (is) better. (Has soul weary sound. Reaction to the Akin controversy.)
If I'm not mistaken, Frosty, didn't Hammer take the samples of "Superfreak," but only paid Rick James after the song hit it big? I don't think he got permission before...same as Vanilla Ice as mentioned.
