One thing that always got me about NBC's coverage is they don't start showing games until CHRISTMAS DAY.

Nothing happening during the first two months of the season, fellas?

Anybody know how long ABC's contract will be for, or for how long NBC's was?

No team in the NBA can beat my Los Angeles Lakers in a best of 7 series. I know it hurts, and I'm sorry.

I vaguely remember reading somewhere that this is a 6 year deal with ABC/ESPN...NBC had the NBA for 11 years. So we'll now have NBA on ABC on Sunday, on ESPN Wed. and Fri., and on TNT Thursdays. I have a feeling we'll be seeing a LOT of the Lakers..........not that there's anything wrong with that ;-)

No one asked but I was bored at work...

Best I can figure from pooling my resources here at work, John Tesh makes app. $400 dollars a game in royalties for every game on NBC that is shown by all 200 or so affiliates. Multiply that by however many games NBC carried this year and you've got a nice little chunk of change for (what seemed to be) an easy little ditty to put together.

I nominate Brew and DJFF to start working on an NBA on ABC theme...(if it's accepted, my cut is 25%) ;-)

From the desk of Swordsman Yen
Anybody see that halftime interview Bob Costas had with David Stern? He really took Stern to task about the problems with today's NBA. I normally don't like Costas and it was probably just sour grapes over losing the NBA, but it was sort of fun seeing Stern squirm after Costas asked why fans should support a new arena with their tax dollars when a team is making money, has great fan support, and the only improvement would be adding more luxury boxes that most of these fans could never afford.

I think this is more of a carryover from the days when NBC had the NFL, and face it, the NBA isnt really all that intersting for the first two months is it?

You know youre old when you try to convince some kid that was born in the freakin 80's that Samus Aran could whip Lara Croft's cave dwelling ass. Honestly, has there ever been a cooler weapon in the history of video games than the Screw Attack?

I have always hated the way NBC advertises the games. Shaq vs. Weber. Kobe vs. Jordan. It's a fucking team game not one big name player against another.
I like but I do understand the preference that the big teams get. More people will watch a Laker's game than a Grizzlie game. But I really hate the way you can hear the announcers pray that the finals will be L.A. vs. N.Y. just for the larger population. Of course NBC sports has been like that forever. Remember when they wanted the World Series to end sooner so then they could show "Must See T.V." Like Friends would go away if it was one week later. I don't understand why NBC pays 100's of millions and then treats the sports like crap.

Actually, I've read that NBC has a new philosophy about sports, and one thing is that they are no longer going to pay 100's of millions for rights to show games. They want the sports department to actually make money. Therefore they've lost the NFL, NBA, and MLB. You can't make money televising those sports. So NBC will just televise golf, tennis, NASCAR, and the Olympics, because these are all opportunities to make money. And they will take a chance on Arena Football, afterall the rights for that was free.

That's probably why they wanted the World Series to end. Friends makes money, MLB doesn't. (Ratings were also way down for this year's NBA finals, BTW)

My major complaint concerning the NBA switching to the ABC/ESPN family is that this now means less college basketball on weeknights & less NHL. ABCESPN seems to have a full plate, and I definately do not want my college hoops to go on a diet. I hope Turner handles all in-week games (like they have in the past) and that Saturday night is reserved for NCAA.

Regarding the Tesh theme, Conan did a bit for a few weeks where he would take old movies ("It's a Wonderful Life")and current TV shows ("ER"), and insert in certain scenes. Everyone else may hate it, but IMO, that music makes everything better. I dig that jive.

Working for an ABC-affiliated station in Wisconsin (and not in Milwaukee), I can honestly say...there's been absolutely NO buzz up here about us getting the NBA.

Probably because after an exciting, just-missed-the-Finals 2000-01 season, the Bucks absolutely TANKED in 2001-02. And that killed any possibility of a spark of interest outside of the Cream City for them.

The apathy up here towards Milwaukee Bucks and NBA basketball in general is pretty darn thick. Granted, lots of kids used to wear Charlotte Hornets gear after UWGB's Tony Bennett had a cup of coffee with 'em in the 90's, but the Bucks have been so bad so long that nobody simply gives a hoot any more.

Dear God, the apathy...how many days until the Packers open up training camp?

Yeah, that's a problem with Wisconsin sports fans. Most will support the Packers first and then the Milwaukee teams only if they're any good.

I've got to say, the situation with the Brewers really pissed me off. "We've got to build a new stadium to be financially viable." Notice they said "financially viable." That's because the Brewers are never going to be "athletically viable". It's not just anger against the Brewers though. I hate that every sports team always needs to 1) build a new stadium every 10 years (that's what it seems like) and 2) needs the taxpayers to help them. Then, they get the stadium, and that's the end of caring about taxpayers. At least until the next time they need to build a stadium.

The NBA has a salary cap, right? Although the Larry Bird Rule makes it seem pretty pointless. "You can only pay a certain amount for all your payroll, unless it's guys who were on your team, in which case you can pay whatever you want." And now I'm rambling, so I better stop.

I've never been pro-salary cap because it seems anti-American in many ways, although I can see the point in it. However, of the sports that do have caps I like the NBA's the best BY FAR, mainly because of the Larry Bird rule. In other sports you have players switching teams every year, and you get nothing for your investment. At least in the NBA, players are encouraged to stay with the same team, and even when they have sign and trade deals, the old team gets something out of it.
