Yes, ESPN and ESPN2 will break from showing women playing tennis (rolandgarros.fr) in order to broadcast LIVE the championship round of the Scripps National Spelling Bee (spellingbee.com).

It starts an hour from as I write this on ESPN2 and then moves over to ESPN probably some time right after the Capriati/Myskina match. (GO JEN GO)

Whew, you had me worried after that first paragraph that they were gonna break away from Capriati for spelling and I would need to hurt someone if that happened. Even though she is looking sorta manly these days.

Huge ratings. It's kind of surreal. Kinda pissed that the Geography Bee doesn't get more props since I was a state semifinalist back in '93.

For me, it's always highly addictive to watch. Mainly because it's a chance to root against awkward, overachieving children and watch their emotional collapse when they miss a word and that little bell rings.

If you haven't seen it, "Spellbound" is a GREAT documentary on the 1999 national spelling bee. Fascinating insight into how seriously the kids (but really their parents) take this thing:

ESPN should put curling on the air.

Curling > Spelling Bee.

Did anybody see the kid pass out, and then get right back up and spell the word?

I'm bummed I missed that.

I watched the MathCount competition they had on ESPN2 today with the 8th grade math geniuses. Good lord. I was blown away by how smart these little cusses were.

They're probably gonna re-run it every half hour on ESPNews... Brian Kenny loves the kids passing out.

What was weird, though, was while they're giving him the word, you could see the kid reacting like "oh shit..." and realizing he's gonna faint. Oh, and no one helped him up, either. One contestant (who was already punched out) got up, but that's it.

My old boss is from Minnesota, and he showed me some tapes of curling and it looks...different. Almost like a cross of shuffleboard and chess, on ice.

The only thing I've seen that is more odd was some Morris Dancing.

I had nothing to do yesterday (thanks to the giant TREE LIMB that decided to use the windshield of my car to break its fall) BUT watch the spelling bee. Tremendous as always.

That one kid? That was a cross between Isiah Thomas scoring 25 points in a quarter during Game 6 of the NBA Finals on one foot and Kirk Gibson in the 1988 World Series.

I expect you fans, you people here in LA to do what you do best. RIOT!

I saw curling on my American TV a few weeks ago, but I don't remember if it was ESPN, the Deuce or FSW.
