Not a bad summer movie.

It can't compete with the impact of T2 and its groundbreaking effects, so it's unfair to go in expecting to be as wowed. Nor does it fall into that film's eye-rolling goofiness (almost any time the kid talks and the thumbs-up at the end). It's also a more earnest action film than the third.

Fans of the franchise will recognize a slew of callbacks to the earlier films. I didn't mind it at all, and in many ways, the film recreates moments as blatantly as Aliens did to Alien or Evil Dead 2 does for that first film. Me, I enjoyed them all. Fans will be a bit annoyed by exposition for the casual viewers.

You might also be annoyed by clumsy dialogue and sometimes uninspired camerawork. However, that's balanced by fun action sequences and good acting. Really good acting.

I'm again reminded how similar the basic themes/production design are to The Matrix franchise, and I caught myself a few times hoping we'd see some blatant crossover. That doesn't happen, but there are some narrative parallels.

It feels like the first chapter of a bigger arc, and I understand that this is the first of a new trilogy. I'm eager to see the next installments and curious to see if the franchise can develop beyond Cameron's mythology.

I enjoyed it. It was clear that the makers of this movie were fans of the original trilogy, as there were neat touches and twists throughout, like the Guns N Roses song, but especially the "good guys driving a giant truck while being chased by bad guys on motorcycles" spin on the T2 chase.

Also, the CGI Arnold cameo actually worked, when it should have had no chance of working.

It is the policy of the documentary crew to remain true observers and not interfere with its subjects.

If you wanna reach the Co-op, boy, you gotta get by me.

While I mostly agree I felt this is the first time I can say a movie would have been better with less Christian Bale. Half the time he using that Batman tuberculosis growl from Batman Begins/Dark Knight. In the smaller moments he was excellent.

However,I do agree about Sam Worthington as Wright (the scene that brings him to 2018 was just so raw and awesome) and Anton Yelchin with his performance as Kyle and Chekhov is bound to make him a star.

The first half of the film felt really disjointed. Bale was originally offered the role of Marcus because Conner was going to be a minor character. After the script was done, Bale and Nolan expanded Conner's role and it really felt like he was tacked on.

Because of the time travel aspect, I never felt like the characters were in any real danger. The trailers revealed that Marcus was metal, Reese can't die because he's Connor's dad, and Conner can't die because he hasn't sent Reese into the past yet.

I was expecting alot more and I was hoping it was set further in the future to prevent them from getting their hands tied with continuity. If the movie was set just after Reese was sent into the past, I think they could have done alot more. This just felt like a 2 or 3 parter of the TV show. To me, it was an ok plot, at best and it was all setup for something else. The special effects were GREAT. I just wish the plot was too.

The rumor was that if Bale had stayed as Marcus, Connor would have died in the end and Marcus would have worn Connor's skin as a tribute. I was ahead of the current ending that once Kate said it was his heart, I threw up my arms and sighed because I knew what was coming.

I'm taking it with a grain of salt, but (discussion of the next film follows)

Wikipedia is saying that the sequel is going to be a prequel chronology, because the plot will involve Connor jumping back to 2011 (when the film will be released) to actually organize the resistance he wouldn't actually be leading until 2018 because of the plot of the film, unless he's going to try to change the future. Since Linda Hamilton is involved in the story again (she did the tape recordings), McG wants her to come back and star as her 2011 version of Sarah.

Let me start by saying I liked it. I think the critical savaging it's getting is due mostly to obscenely (and irrationally) high expectations. It had great action, great visuals, and introduced a compelling new character in Marcus. Sure it wasn't very deep, but it was a nice glimpse into a future that had only briefly been referenced before.

That said, despite the fact that the film featured no actual time travel, it contained one of the biggest time travel paradoxes (or continuity errors) I've ever seen:

Let's see if I can make my thoughts make sense. OK, so obviously Salvation takes place before John has sent Kyle back. Yet, there are the tapes from Sarah telling John he has to send Kyle back. Also, John knows Kyle is his father. If the tapes exist, then you can assume the first Terminator film has already taken place. So, Christian Bale is the adult version of the John Connor conceived in the first film. That means he is also the adult version of the John Connor in the second film. So...HOW DOES HE NOT KNOW ABOUT ORGANIC TERMINATORS?! (Not to mention the ending of T3, with John and Kate (No Eight) ending up in the bunker and then eventually married in this film. They both interacted with organic Terminators.) Basically, if the tapes aren't in the film (and they were only there to work in Linda Hamilton somewhere), then you have no paradox.

EDIT: Also, I would liked to have seen how time travel is made possible. I haven't seen Terminator in a while, so I can't remember the hows of it.

If I may...

John had never met a Terminator who acted like Marcus before. The two Arnoldbots he met before Judgment Day could never provide that human demeanor. And I suspect the inability to control cyborgs like Marcus is why the later Terminators (Arnold, etc.) were robots covered in meat and skin, totally devoid of humanity inside.

The level of shock everyone, including John, had at the discovery of Marcus' innards does not support your theory. Additionally, after the Marcus discovery, John asks someone if there was anything about organics in the data they recovered during the raid at the beginning of the film.

I think you're right in that's what they were going for, but it was left too vague for me.

The movie was pretty good; it was definitely better than T3 but the movie was confusing somewhat in certain places. I heard there is supposed to be 2 more Terminator movies to finish the Terminator series.

I would give this movie a B-.

Saw it last night. Better than I expected. It would have been a bit cooler if I didn't already know Marcus was a machine, though.

Saw it today, was not impressed at all, in either the story, or the acting. Even the visuals, which generally the terminator series shine at, were just average.
