(EDIT: Oops, that's supposed to be "reunification BOUT".
Zeruel -- Fixed!)

From a sport where stupidity often rules the day, this ranks pretty high up there.

December 18, Antonio Tarver and Glen Johnson are fighting in what WAS going to be a 175-lb. unification bout. However, Tarver, the WBC champ, and Johnson, the IBF Champ, both needed premission from the sanctioning bodies of their respective titles to put their belts up in the fight instead of taking mandatory challenges from their #1-ranked opponents. guys named Paul Briggs and Rico Hoye, respectively.

I consider myself a pretty big boxing fan, and I've never heard of EITHER of those guys.

(A quick check of boxrec.com's 175-lbs rankings shows that these guys aren't bad. Briggs, an Australian trained by Jack Mosely is 23-1 (the loss in his 2nd pro fight) with 17 KOs, including a four-round KO of Roy Jones-hands-behind-h?is-back-then-KO Glen Kelly, and Rico Hoye is 18-0 with 14 KOs including a KO of Roy Jones-victim-turned-?two-time-Darius Michalczeswki-victim Richard Hall and a split decision win over Montell Griffin in his last bout.)

Shouldn't they let Tarver and Johnson unify the titles then face these lesser-known, lesser-marquee value guys? Of course. I'm shocked their not doing so.

At least Tarver's Ring Magazine title is at stake.

Eek. This is sad aplenty.

They'll probably be stripped for fighting each other, too.

Then Jones will get a "title fight" against, oh, Hoye and beat him for a meaningless reign.

If they did that, that would throw into question the integrity of each of the prestigious sanctioning bodies kickback, I mean ranking systems. IN a world where the best boxers face each other, what use would there be for 27 different sanctioning bodies and their respective kickback, oops, I keep meaning to say ranking systems?

Briggs has POWER. He's a converted Muay Thai fighter who held Muay Thai world titles. He's also fought and won 2 Title Elimination bouts in his last 2 fights. The last against a previously undefeated Croatian. On his day he could knock anyone out.

Just one more nail in the coffin of all but the "Ring" Championship. Don't they even have actual, physical belts now?

Buffer used to introduce Lennox Lewis as the "Linear, Legitimate, Heavyweight champion of the world." Do you think the other division's linear champs - which are essentially the Ring champs - will ever get this kind of treatment - especially if this alphabet championship garbage keeps going on?

Yes, they have belts, and I seem to recall Barrera getting introduced as the Ring champ when he didn't own an actual belt from a sanctioning body. I think that's the case because they've got Pacquaio as their 126-lb. champ now. And I know they always kept Tszyu as the 140-lb. champ while he was out, because they want the titles to change hands in the ring unless a guy moves up in weight, and even THEN they won't put their vacant belt up in a match unless the two guys they want are fighting for it.

Incidentally, checking that out I found that as of the October Ring rankings they have Briggs at #8 and Hoye at #10, so they must be at least DECENT prospects. They've got Tarver as the champ and Johnson as the #1 contender, so the right guys are fighting.
