Yes, I just bought me a NES and Punch-Out! Now can anybody tell me how the hell to beat Soda Popinski, Mr. Sandman, Super Macho Man, and Tyson?
Ah, the games of my youth. Double Dribble and Contra, YOU'RE NEXT! (I'd marry that spray gun if I could.)

To beat Tyson, you have to dodge everything that he throws at you for the first 1:30 of Round 1. If you get a Star punch on him, don't use it. He'll knock you out as you try.
Tyson blinks about 1/2 second before he throws the uppercut. Don't get in a rythym or you will get knocked out.
The other guys.... eh. Don't get hit
Your analogy is similar to:
"They already have cars that you can drive, why not blenders?" "I can already write with my hands, why not my pancreas?" "They already have beef that I can eat, why not granite?"
It's all about knowing when to dodge and counter. Popinski is easy enough after a few tries. Sandman is dammed hard...I don't know if I ever completely dodged his triple uppercut. Macho has a pattern similar to Popinski -- Study it and you'll find him incredibly easy.
As for Tyson...Don't get hit by one of his uppercuts in the first 1:30 of Round 1 or you'll go down immediately, no matte what your strength bar says.
God, I remember practicing for hours to beat Soda Pop. I just remember that it looks like you're punching his gloves instead of his face, because the guy's sooo big.

Just as Popinski is building to an uppercut (he kinda ducks down and gives a mean look) hit him with a body blow for a star. Dodge his next punch, then give him a rapid one-two combination several times to the face, capping it off with a star punch.
Sandman is just hard. Hang on for dear life, don't get hit with the razor uppercut. You can get stars by punching him in the face while he rolls his hands prior to an uppercut. You can use the star a couple of times, but then he'll start dodging them. Just be persistant. Remember: he's very vulnerable to body blows. After the razor uppercut, hit him ONCE in the face, then go left, right, left, right again and again to his STOMACH.
On Super Macho Man, you have to beat the spinning punch. It's kinda the same strategy as with Great Tiger - watch your timing and dodge hard to the left each time he spins around. When he stops, give him a rapid one-two combo to the face. Left, right, left, right with no odd punches.
Tyson: pray.

With Super Macho Man, be really quick with your punches. I have gotten anywhere from 4 to 6 punches after you dodge him, so be fast. If you block the uppercut thing, you can get several shots on him, and my favorite with those punches is to use the left, right, left, right system of punches.
I thought Popinski was incredibly easy, IMO. Knocked him out the 1st time I faced him.

This is beautiful! I was just thinking about this game the other day. All those hours, gaining that experience, setting personal records, lost knowledge now.
What I do remember is that the left-right 1-2 combinations are the key to most of the fights. Glass Joe, in under 40 secs, he won't get up the 2nd time. Don Flamingo in 42 secs with the same technique. If I remember correctly, Sandman is also susceptible to this. 1st the head shot, then 1-2's to the body. And King Hippo too.
Another key to victory on most of those guys is catching them with a body shot when they are coming in. Like Piston Honda (I think that's his name) the Japanese guy. When he steps, catch him coming in and he's done. Just like Bald Bull and the Sandman.
Also it's easy to get stars on most of them if you can hit them during their combinations or when squatting down. Some of the fighters know how to dodge the special punch. But if you hit them with a regular shot the 1st or 2nd time, then you can lay the smackdown. Thankfully , that is all that I remember right now.
