Been a Rick reader since the news from dayton days - always found him to give an interesting slant to news and liked his observations - wasn't too highbrow or inside - really only go there and slash these days - never went to the Torch because I think Wade is there and he just got too petty and bitter in his recaps during the final days of his DDT Digest tenure - used to go to wrestleplanet and iowrestling for news and recaps too but the multitude of pop ups and "see lita and steph naked in shower together" links just got old real fast......as for the OO Ticker - why bother - haven't hit it since week 1 - there are better news sources - like wienerville for example

Well, I'm REALLY late in the game on this topic but...

I always could take or leave Rick. WAY back in the day, NfD and MiCasa were the best places to get the info.

( Well, there WAS Scoops too, but after the 100th time it was reported that Yokozuna was going to join the Hart Foundation, credibility was absent.)

Anyhoo, I always like MiCasa but Rick was...Average at best. His writing style was the same as everyone else's and he was so pro-WWF (along with Keith), that this credibility was nil.

Then there was Wrestlelline which...was...an abortion - aside for CRZ's recaps. Rick was just set up to be a total tool and it seemed that he never caught on. The Ask The Rick columns were embarassing and his POV in his regular columns was so middle of the road that it was a waste to even load the page. He doesn't get totial blame for all that since I'm sure CBS told him to play nice but...all that turned him into a total joke, honestly.

Anyhoo, the OO now is...pretty unnecessary. And it just seems that Rick's trying too hard to continue on that Wrestleline feel, as if he's completely oblivious that A LOT of people HATED Wrestleline for being the most vanilla wrestling site on the Net.

Dunno, I just think the day and age of that kind of site is done - especaially now that we're down to one fed. Most fans don't really WANT columns, they want recaps and spoilers and a place to exchange opinions. Rick is trying to hold on because I think he genuinely likes the scene. I HOPE that's the reason. Or else it's just ego-stroking and that's just pathetic in his case since he's not that good to think he could hang among the better Net writers going.

Your mileage may vary, of course.

So basically, if you're not one of the two or three people *I* like to read, then kindly stay the hell off the Internet?

Everybody's got a right to put their opinions on the Internet. Some post in forums, and others make web sites. Rick has a web site. A pretty successful one too, I gather (evidenced by the recent capacity-crash).

There are writers I don't enjoy reading. That doesn't mean they ought to leave the Internet forever. It simply means that I, Denny, do not care for their work. And that, in turn, means next to nothing, in the grand scheme of things.

I wouldn't put spaghetti among my personal top 5 favorite foods either, but that doesn't mean the grocery store should get rid of pasta.

I actually like the fact that Rick is more balanced, it sure beats the way some sites shove their half assed opinions down your throat. When I want my news I prefer to just have it straight with a fairly level viewpoint, rather than loaded with either "blind marking is great" or the "I'm so cynical it hurts" attitudes that permeate most sites.

I prefer to get polarised opinion pieces here at [slash] or Weinerville, because it's my choice to seek it out here, and then it's way better IMO because you can actually have dialogue with real people rather than some guy who wouldn't respond if you e-mailed them.

But as for POV in news columns, Rick's got it right for my taste.

Err. Didn't mean to offend anyone. I didn't phrase what I MEANT to say correctly, it seems.

Thet Rick is what Rick is. If you like him, fine. If you don't, that's fine too. Just because a style doesn't appeal to me doesn't mean it's not valid or what have you. I didn't say anything about anyone geting off the Net. I don't know where that came from. I generally despise 1popups.com but that doesn't mean they need to go away. I tend to find Rick to have little purpose anymore BUT on the plus side he DOES still like the wrestling and he's still doing his act because he likes to do it. Huzzah!. Keep at it.

I just feel that IMHO Rick tended to, while on Wrestleline, do everything in his power to not offend people/say the wrong thing/have nothing bad to say about anything. Granted, round about '99 or so, it seemed like the whole Net scene had taken a bad turn towards the negative and people who genuinely didn't like wrestling anymore were still reviewing/writing columns and it became painful to wade through them.

Now, while Rick's general optimism was OODLES better than, say, Eric S, and his tirades or Scott Keith in that spell where it seemed like he was auditioning for the WCW writing team, Rick's thumbs up for everything devalued the worth of his opinion to many -especially when it came to PPV reviews and if you were going to order the replay based on the 'Net outlook (and for those of us saving our pennies, this was a true thing).

Again, your mileage may vary. It's good to see Rick keep up doing what he likes. I'm glad you all can still find him. More power to you. It's just that, Rick doesn't do anything for me.

I think I drew the conclusion that's what you meant because of comments about his type of site being past its time and unnecessary, and all that. In a thread titled "Rick Scaia Retire already," I just kind of assumed that's what you were driving at. I apologize if I assumed wrong.

In the end, we're all just over-analyzing stuff involving guys playing around in their underwear!

Or not.

The SmarKow Says: Well Rick seems to be polite, insightful, and pretty wise when it comes to predicting things. That's what he seems like to me. The go between, the mark-smark ambassador. Wow, that didn't sound very angry. I think I'm getting too much sleep.
