It's easy to make the parallel, but I don't think Ryder and Bryan are at all the same thing. If anything, what's happening to Bryan makes much, much less sense. Ryder's burial was malicious - I don't think there are many people willing to argue that the WWE wasn't punishing him for getting over on his own. Bryan, on the other hand, is by all accounts well-liked by management, and his success is seen as a "product" of the WWE. Whatever they're doing to Bryan, I think that they think it's actually going to help him, and I can't imaging why they would think that.

The Bryan angle is something different, and if nothing else, has a bit of logic behind it whether it's to be taken at face value (good guy, beaten down by a system that openly conspires against him, gives up) or a swerve (knowing he will never get a fair fight, Bryan tries to take down the Wyatts from within).

If anything, this shows how little good will WWE has left. We can't even wait one week (much less three months) to see how this plays out. Not that I blame anyone for not having faith in WWE to deliver from a creative standpoint. I'm not holding my breath for anything great coming out of this either. There's potential here, but they've squandered a lot of potential of late.

Let's consider the possibility that there are no single heel opponents on Bryan's level. He has to work the underdog vs. stable angle. He's that big.

Damien? Axel? Ryback? Antonio? Fandango? Del Rio? Broadus? They're midcard. They're B+. Orton is the lone main event heel. He's IT.

Brock just showed up. That would be a fun match.

Ryder was barely popular, except with the Tri-State area, and rode a barely amusing faux Jersey Shore fad way beyond its expiration date.

Are you seriously comparing Daniel Bryan to Zach Ryder? Wait, wait... not only that but are you seriously laying judgement on something that's only 5 minutes old (in television time)? That's like saying that WCW blew it 20 minutes after Bash at the Beach ended because they took a lifetime fan favourite and made him turn on everyone.

It's already been on record that the WWE is high on Daniel Bryan so lets just end this "burial" nonsense...

That's not even what this is to me. I've been waiting for this to play out since SummerSlam. They have yet to give me satisfaction, and side-tracking with the Wyatts is only moving in a direction that I didn't want to go in the first place. A quick win against tough opponents would have at least built Bryan back up after his loss to Orton, but this is just garbage.

I can't say this enough. The Rock came out to cut a promo, and people were chanting for Zack Ryder. The Rock. I don't care if it was in his hometown, I don't care if it was only for a moment, I don't care if it was only for a second. If that ever happens, if you have a guy getting cheered over the Rock, then that guy is money. The Jersey Bro gimmick had a shelf-life, but Zack Ryder is a guy that you could build an entire promotion around.

Ok, lets all breath here. I don't think anyone thinks Bryan is being buried as much as getting lost in the shuffle. Again, look its another part timer coming back for a spot on Mania. Shocker. I am not sure where they are going with this, my hope is Bryan destroys the Wyatts from with in. Now, this sorta goes against the game plan by Metzler of Cena facing them. Even if its Cena/Bryan at Mania as the main event, its not what the fans want or anyone should want for Bryan. Because, its once again Cena trying to save his Gilligan.

Now for Zack. Considering the Tri-State consists most of America's major cities, at least the important ones for the WWE and his merchandise was selling hot, your argument is somewhat invalid. What WWE did to Ryder was beyond stupid. They got rid of a red hot guy for the sake of showing the locker room, there is only one way to get over, its the WWE way.

To try to focus on the positive:

Good wrestling and longer matches on this show. Punk-Rollins had some rough spots early but it got good for the second half of it.

Wade's making chicken salad out of you-know-what.

Lesnar-Henry stuff was tremendous. Wish Brock was a regular but this does make his appearances more "special".

Liked Big E rolling out of the ring after Fandango's guillotine legdrop rather than kicking out of a finisher.

Like Aksana's new finisher.

Definitely a Harper believer now that I'm seeing him on a regular basis.

The underlying story since SummerSlam has been that Daniel Bryan has been held down. Also, there have been other underlying events, specifically where Big Show was to be a new years baby and is being featured as an old school entity. It's a new approach for the WWE, being all underlying.

Furthermore, does anyone here think D-Bry should have had less time on TV, having wrestled multiple matches on a few Raws, while establishing the Running Knee as a finisher, to make room for Zach Ryder? Does anyone honestly feel that the man they had headlining the last live TV show of the year (instead of doing a house show in Toronto) is the guy getting buried?

Something is brewing. I think once the Rumble happens it'll become more clear.

I marked out hard when Mark Henry came down. Even harder afterwards.

If this somehow leads to Lesnar vs Bryan, I am all about this, but I'm guessing this sets up an ending where Undertaker costs Lesnar the match to set up Taker/Lesnar at WM30.

Of course, if we do get Lesnar/Bryan, then I guess that would leave Taker without an opponent and, what a coincidence, Cena doesn't have one either! Nah, those two can't fight at the milestone WrestleMania, can they?

Brock's return was a pleasant surprise and definitely adds that much-needed boost Elimination Chamber needs. It also adds a ton of confusion as far as what the Elimination Chamber match will actually be for now.

That Bryan ending was just weird. He seemed reluctant and just plain tired, so I'm sure this is a red herring turn like when Sting "joined" the nWo. The Wyatts are very entertaining to me, but when it comes to the big matches at the big 3-0 WrestleMania, I don't really want to see them in them. Maybe going for the tag titles, but that's it.

Okay, I like #BadNewsBarrett now. It's still dumb, but I like it.

Punk/Shield at the beginning was great. Really looking forward to Punk/Reigns next week. No way Punk wins that one, though.

BTWs, did you wonder why Big Show was getting so much build-up over the fall and then so abruptly not? WWE was planning on doing Brock vs. Big Show at the Rumble, then changed their Brock match to the title shot instead.

All I'm waiting to see is that this is something I probably don't want to see but is not a big deal in a couple weeks, and not a WCW-level act of fundamental malevolence.

Bryan pretends to join the Wyatts to help clear out the Rumble, then doublecrosses Bray and dumps him at the end to outsmart the machine is my new Mania pipe dream of the month.

Oh man what if GOLDBERG costs Lesnar his match at Elmination Chamber, setting up an awesome WrestleMania encounter and can you IMAGINE the chants by the "smart" crowd?

Wait, no, they did that one already and I seem to remember it didn't go over so well.

Yes.

But this is not five minutes old. Bryan has been booked to look like a chump for... I dunno... the last two months maybe? Ever since they shunted him out of the title picture at least.

I'm not new to pro wrestling and as a writer I'm more than familiar with what the hero's journey is all about. But someone up-thread hit the nail on the head - it's all about lack of goodwill at this point. How many times has the WWE completely fumbled when they've managed to catch lightning in a bottle? The Nexus was damn hot when they made their debut. How about CM Punk's pipe bomb heard 'round the world? There's loads of angles or hot performers that they could have capitalized on and made good money from over the past ten years or so but didn't because the writers are goofs, Vince is a jerk, politics, etc, etc. The days of the company jumping on an amazing Austin 3:16 promo seem to be long gone.

I'd love to be dead wrong and watch as Bryan wins the Royal Rumble or gets himself booked in one of the top matches at Wrestlemania, but I'm leery that they'll do what's genuinely 'best for business'.

Wyatt has mentioned off and on about "standing up to the machine" which I believe is the top brass of the WWE (McMahon-Helmsley, their Golden Boys Cena and orton). Before joining the Wyatt family Bryan brings up that he couldn't surpass the machine by himself so maybe this is a plot to get himself a small army out of the Wyatt family by conquering them from within.

He's already proven he's about as tough as two thirds of the family on his own, and that they have to damn near kill him for weeks to get him to join. Maybe the angle will be that he joins but over time he proves he's the toughest Alpha Dog of the group, and the one with the most focused rage on taking down the Macmahon-Helmsley way of doing things as well as recycling their favorite two Main Eventers Cena and Orton. Which could lead to:

A) The Wyatt family become tweener stable after Bryan proves he's too tough to bully, Bryan gets his big title shot at either Brock or Orton at 'Mania next year. Bryan is close to his proper win when HHH sends The Shield, God, and country to stop him The Wyatt Family counterattack creating the giant iconclastic moment they have been waiting for and backing their chosen conqueror.

B) JBL owns "Broke Wrestler" Shawn Micheals/MacHelmsley owns "Broke Wrestler: Big Show storyline Part Trois: Wyatt Family owns Daniel Bryan.

Seth Rollins working his ass of in two quality matches within a week. I forgot Rollins trained at the Ring of Honor school when Punk still taught there so the match was hopefully one of many future Student v. Master matches we'll see from these two, hopefully with less botching. Points for Dean Ambrose sanity falling off and acting proper nuts at ringside the whole match after being called the weak link.

So I'm guessing Mark Henry had another injury and the Brock attack was a way to get him off tv again huh?

Why is Rosa still in the company? Fuck it no one cares about Rosa, more importantly WHERE THE FUCK IS JOJO!?

God I'm sick of Fandango. That Gimmick is a dry spell now. I'm scared that if he simply went back to Johnny "Durty Curty" Curtis Creative will have even less clue in what to do with him.

Oh wow another Cena v. Orton main event in 2014. Fuck Off.

I believe in The Shield....

I'm really surprised so many people are down on the Bryan/Wyatts angle after the real-time reaction on Twitter was pretty overwhelmingly positive. I had to text IJ to tell her not to look at the WWE app for spoilers, as Bryan is one of her very favorites and she has hated the Wyatts since they showed up. I couldn't WAIT to see her reaction to all that happening, which was going to happen last night.

Unfortunately with her being an almost 11-year old she couldn't help herself from looking, which she told me as we were getting home from the hockey game last night. Oh well. To be fair, she said "you CAN'T send me a text in ALL CAPS telling me not to look at it and expect me not to look at it." I should've known better.

Anyway, we watched the show last night. Seth Rollins looked great against CM Punk (plus LOL at the ladyfan who called Punk "CM") and Big E and Fandango was actually really good. (IJ: "You can see Summer Rae's bellybutton." Yeah, that's, uh, awful.) Also, my one-person focus group thinks Brock Lesnar needs a haircut.

Now, there has been a LOT of crapping on Orton/Cena for the Rumble in this thread. I'm not saying it's not deserved and I'm not criticizing anyone for it. All I'm telling you is what happened in my house when Stephanie McMahon said the words "John Cena". (And I had assured IJ that I didn't think it would be Cena because I expected him to tbe in the Rumble.) IJ's reaction to the announcement was to LEAP OFF THE COUCH AND DANCE AROUND THE LIVING ROOM FOR 45 STRAIGHT SECONDS. This is a thing that happened.

OTOH...Daniel Bryan. Three weeks ago we were in the crowd at the KeyArena screaming "YES!" IJ bought a "YES!" towel at the show. She just got a Daniel Bryan action figure for Christmas the other day. And let me stress that she spent the first two months legitimately freaked out by everything about the Wyatts. Like "clutch-my-arm-when-the-lights-go-out"-freaked out. So Daniel Bryan joins the Wyatts and they are all walking up the ramp and I hear...

"I guess maybe I'll have to start liking the Wyatts now."

Wait, what? YOU'RE GOING TO LIKE THE WYATTS NOW? *head spins*

Anyway, if they are going to break up the Shield (insert sadface emoticon here) then the Wyatts with Daniel Bryan will make a perfectly good heel stable that interrupts things and kick ass. Tell me you won't LOVE Daniel Bryan busting a Shining Wizard out of John Cena because Bray told him to do it. I don't believe you.

Holy fuck shit motherfucker shit. Read comics. Fuck shit shit fuck shit I sold out when I did my job. Fuck fuck fuck shit fuck. Sorry had to do it....

To this day, that match is still the single most baffling thing I've ever seen in my 3+ decades of watching wrestling. Not that the match sucked or that the crowd shat all over it, because that's completely understandable.

But how did it not end with Stone Cold stunning both guys? That probably would have produced the biggest pop of the night.

After reading everyone's observations and opinions, the only thing that I have to add is to ask how much better these angles (all of them) would be with competent announcers. Watching old matches online and DVDs, it's night and day between Gorilla/Ventura/JR and everyone since JR left. Christ even B+ players like Lord Alfred Hayes and Piper tried to sell the angles and ring work.

Do you mean in the match itself? Because they both got a stunner after the match was over.

Ah. Selective memory. I guess at the time (and this is the only Wrestlemania I ever watched live (on PPV)) I was begging them to call an audible and have Austin take them both out in order to end the match, rather than have either one of them go over.

I realize at the time they were pissed about Brock walking out on everything they had handed him, whereas Goldberg's contract was expired and they had been expecting that for awhile, but in retrospect Lesnar is back and Goldberg isn't, so it makes little sense to have put Goldberg over.

(But now I'm envisioning Ryback accepting the Goldberg chants and claiming to have beaten Lesnar at Wrestlemania.)
