TNA announced on their website that Jeff Hardy has signed a new two-year deal with TNA, which is shorter than what was implied by TNA president Dixie Carter making the announcement Thursday night during Bellator MMA.
Carter said during her announcement that she "just signed Hardy to a long-term deal," which will keep him in TNA for a "very long time."
Hardy's TNA contract was due this month, prompting speculation on whether he would return to WWE, who added him to the alumni section of their website on Thursday.
This speaks somewhat to how little Vince and Hunter must think of TNA, because they could have given them a huge kick in the gonads by scooping up their world champion. On top of that, it would have given a lot of buzz to The E. Tell me you wouldn't have been excited about seeing Jeff Hardy come back for long-awaited revenge against CM Punk. Of course, where all this fun falls apart is that you never know when Jeff could fall off the wagon and that might have been too much of a chance for Vince or Hunter to take.
As for a two-year extension with TNA, I think for as much as I disliked the carpet getting pulled out from under Austin Aries, I certainly can't argue that Jeff hasn't earned this with his in-ring work in 2012. I don't necessarily want to see the title stay on him and I don't necessarily want to see the promotion center around him, but I won't dispute that he's earned this.
Jeff can't get much revenge on Punk after everything Punk said as a heel against Jeff came true. Jeff is where he is only because TNA gave him a second chance after he worked a PPV main event clearly blotto. And TNA put him out there in front of an audience, working a match, for the title, against a guy who physically limited these days. It was ugly and dangerous, and he's incredibly fortunate to get a chance to come back, much less carry the title. I can see why the WWE wouldn't want to invite that back under their umbrella these days. Presuming, of course, they had a say in his re-signing with TNA.
I wish him well, and I hope he can stay clean.
All that said, Corporate Heel Hardy was AWESOME. The swanton into a roll to his feet while straightening his tie was brilliant.
