Twins Place Jim Thome On Waivers
By Tim Dierkes [August 22, 2011 at 2:15pm CST]
The Twins placed designated hitter Jim Thome on trade waivers today, tweets Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. Rosenthal says the Phillies want Thome back in their organization, but there's almost no chance the slugger gets to them. Since the Phillies have the best record in the National League, the 28 other teams would have to pass on Thome first.

Thome, 40, is hitting .256/.365/.503 with 12 home runs in 230 plate appearances this year. He cranked his 600th home run a week ago. Now that Thome has reached the milestone, the Twins might be more inclined to trade him if he would like to join a playoff race. Rosenthal notes that Thome has a full no-trade clause.

Thome's salary should not pose a problem, as he has about $610K remaining plus incentives. As of a week ago Thome wasn't too far from Type B status, so if he continues producing there could be a shot at a draft pick. So there is the possibility that American League non-contenders could place claims.

I'm going to be sorry to see him go, but hopefully it's somewhere he can win the world series he wanted.

Has he been put on waivers already this season? My understanding of baseball waivers is that the waiver can be rescinded the first time. I guess time will tell.

Presumably not. You don't have to put someone on trade waivers if you're trying to trade them before July 31. This would be the case where they could pull him back once.

The Indians claimed him, and a deal has been done, according to "sources." More as we have it!

(Also, it was reported that the White Sox claimed Jason Kubel, but no news on that front just yet.)

I expect to have the opportunity to be able to buy Twins tix pretty cheap for the remainder of this season!

So much for giving him a chance to land on a playoff team! :-)
Baseball Prospectus gives the Indians a 2.2% chance of making the playoffs at the moment.

There have been plenty of open seats the past couple of weeks, and after losing Big Jim and probably Kubel, you shouldn't have a problem at all. Thome and Kubel were my two favorite Twins. I am saddened, but hope the best for both of them!

Considering that Indians fans have booed Thome non-stop ever since he left that ought to be a lovely reunion.

Bless you Twins for releasing Thome just prior to their series against the Tigers.
